FireCore has announced a major update to its aTV Flash (black) software that runs on jailbroken second generation Apple TV’s. The update (beta 7) now includes music playback, cloud backup and even Last.fm powered artist slideshows.

A new music player has been built into Media Player, which allows you to stream most music file types from a Mac, PC or NAS drive without using iTunes. During playback, album art, track info, and artist images will automatically be downloaded from Last.fm. Artist images are used in slideshows that can be viewed while music is playing in the background. Support for folder playlists is also included.

New cloud backup feature that provides a way to easily backup all your 3rd party (FireCore, XBMC, Plex, etc...) settings and data to the cloud. Once backed up, a list of your previously saved backups will be available allowing you to to easily restore one of them if needed. Backups are stored securely in the cloud and will remain linked to the AppleTV's serial number - this means they will always be available even if you update or restore your AppleTV.

Media Player now features three distinct options for viewing different types of metadata. The the left (<<) and right (>>) buttons can be used to cycle through the views when browsing through your media.

If you’re already running a version of aTV Flash (black) the new Beta 7 version can be installed through the Maintenance –> Manage Extras menu on your Apple TV.

Does anyone still jailbreak their Apple TV? What is the main reason you do it?

Currently running iOS 5 beta 7 and wondering how to Jailbreak? Well you're in luck, you can now do so with the newest version of Redsn0w. Of course this one is also tethered like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5.

Be advised that not all jailbreak apps and tweaks have been updated to support iOS 5. If you're alright with running tethered and don't mind a few bugs here and there, follow along for a quick walkthrough.

By this point, almost anyone jailbreaking is already familiar with RedSn0w and how it works. It's no different this time.

Devices Supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

And I can't say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak it on iOS 5!

What you need

iOS 5 beta 6 and 7 IPSWs from Apple's Developer Portal

RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 - Mac Link, Windows Link

After you have iOS 5 beta 7 installed on your device, your device backed up, and your version of iTunes upgraded to the newest beta version, follow the steps below to jailbreak.

First launch RedSn0w.

It should ask you to navigate to a firmware file. Simply navigate to the iOS 5 beta 6 firmware file instead of beta 7.

Once you click next, RedSn0w will take a minute to do it’s thing. You should see a patching kernel message and that Redsn0w successfully recognized your firmware.

Next select the options you’d like RedSn0w to perform. I typically only select Install Cydia. It’s worth noting that this is where you will perform a tethered boot if needed as well. You will just select Just boot tethered for now if you need to do this or your device reboots or dies.

Redsn0w will now walk you through putting your device into DFU mode

After you’re successfully in DFU mode, simply let Redsn0w do its thing and you’re done!

A New Version of the iPhone SDK is Now Available. Seventh beta version just posted.

So quoth developer.apple.com/iphone, continuing their breakneck, nigh-unprecedented release pace for the iPhone Software Developer Kit (SDK) and iPhone 2.0 beta firmware.

As always, enterprising developers will likely comb through every string and bit in the new release, looking for new features, and hoping strike gold as they have in the past. I'm still holding my breath for video recording and... cut and paste, but admittedly any new discovery will be welcome.

Meanwhile Apple Software Update is now delivering Quicktime 7.5, one of the core components of the Mac's, and iTunes' graphic layers. If you're not prompted for it, and don't want to trigger it via the utility proper, just surf on over to Apple and grab the direct download. (Note: Mac users will require a reboot -- like we said, it's core level. Windows users, please let us know if you're likewise sent to the restart.).

Speaking of iTunes, iPhone 3G specs indicate iTunes 7.7 will be required to use Apple's new handset, so expect another update sometime between now and the July 11th first release date. Other than iPhone 3G specific support and shifting activation to carrier stores, it's unknown what else the update will bring.

Anyone want to guess? What's hidden in 2.0 Beta 7, and iTunes 7.7? Give us your best shots!
