Verizon is once more firing back at AT&T’s 3G ads by releasing three more TV spots titled “Big Red”, “Sail” and “Shadows”. You will see that two of the three ads are actually spoofs of classic commercial campaigns. “Big Red” spoofs those Big Red gum commercials while “Shadows” spoofs DaBeers Diamonds are forever commercials.

Verizon just loves to try to push what seems to be it’s only advantage over AT&T, more 3G coverage. Once AT&T proceeds with their plans to enhance their network and coverage what will happen to these commercials? What then will Verizon have over AT&T? Sound off in the comments below!

Commercials after the break!

    WoW ……..

  2. Milk says:

    rioflmao!

  3. Milk says:

I do love all this stuff because of how un true it is… but also just because of how much it’s heating up, this is almost as bad as a political election is coming up or something.

  4. soco_jon says:

haha the BIg Red one was classic…. this stuff doesnt seem to be stopping anytime soon lol

  5. apple king says:

the big red joint is the best.

  6. Jailbreaker says:

I’m an AT&T iPhone 3Gs user & I wanna say that Big Red commercial is OUT-F’n-STANDING!!! That was great.

  7. bigiphone says:

Hahaha…I guess they are still pissed because of no iPhone…Awwww to bad

  8. ghostface147 says:

ATT is very behind the ball in nationwide 3G coverage. However since I rarely travel outside Texas, the markets I do visit have 3G coverage. No issue for me there. The only thing I would change is to show ATT’s overall network coverage, with Edge being in a different color or something.

Meanwhile ATT is still getting attacked for their crappy nationwide 3G coverage and rightfully so.

  9. Anthony says:

I agree that they are funny, but can big red think of something else, me personally it getting kinda annoying!!!! I rarely never get any issues with AT& T, not perfect but hey only good thing is that at the end of the day we win as a consumer..

  10. Christopher Mercado says:

I literally laughed out lout. Oh, and im on accounting class. What am i doing here? Dont ask :D

  11. JK says:

sounds like iphone envy to me.

And what corny commercials, seriously. Lets just pull out old commercials (diamonds commercial, big red gum, etc) and make them VZW based.

WOW inventive, did a trained monkey think those up?

  12. Mark Lamb says:

Actually they have more domestic coverage in general over att (south east GA), which sucks I might add. Sitting here enjoying my Droid and iPhone but I believe I will have to return the latter.

  13. RZ says:

LOL! These Verizon ads are pathetic, given that their 3G is slower and their phones are useless outside of North America. That is, unless you have a World Edition BlackBerry.

At least with Bell and Telus in Canada, they have an HSPA network in addition to their older EVDO network, so their claims of better 3G coverage than Rogers do hold some meaning.

  14. macboy says:

I don’t get the sail one . Wouldn’t the verizon guy be crawling way in back of the at&t guy representing there slow ass network . hmmm

  15. iPaladin says:

It doesn’t matter if AT&T refuses to state when they will have their 3G Network Expansion complete. Apple should hold them to the fire… either they complete their 3G buildout by the end of 2010 or they stop selling the iPhone on the AT&T network altogether, even if it means selling on every carrier BUT AT&T.

  16. JK says:

I guess you dont know how contracts work, you cant just “hold out.” Thats a little something called breach of contract, and Apple would be responsible to pay ATT tens if not hundreds of millions in damages, lost revenue, etc.

  17. JK says:

Furthermore to piggyback that, why do you care SO MUCH about a map? Has VZW brainwashed you?

If you dont go to the places on the map, then what good is it?!?!

Additionally, if you bought an ATT phone in a non-3G area and now want to bitch, whose fault is it you went with ATT originally?

  18. Dionte says:

Those were some good commercials but you still can’t talk and browser the internet at the same time, fail

  19. dev says:

AT&T is faster but has less coverage.

Verizon has better coverage but is slower.

Companies are going to emphasize their strengths and hammer their competitor’s weaknesses. It’s just business, not a religious debate.

I’m always amazed how emotionally attached people get to the faceless entities they cut a check to each month.

  20. a1by says:

Point 1 – You can’t talk and browse at the same time with Verizon Counterpoint – You can’t do talk and browse at the same time with AT&T when you’re on EDGE either which a large geographical area of the US only has EDGE

Point 2 – Verizon’s EVDO RevA is slower than AT&T’s HSPA Counterpoint – raw speed of a data network is not the only component to the perception of speed. Key things to consider backhaul (how fast is the tower to the internet), device (can your device process all that speed assuming you’re even getting theoretical max speed), and latency.

  21. Waffles says:

I am slightly surprised that they’re allowed to show AT&T’s 3G network in a direct comparison to Verizon’s without showing AT&T’s edge network as well, even if it’s known as 2.5G, it’s speeds are comparable to Verizon’s “3G” coverage in those rural areas. That’s worse than misleading, its very nearly slander. (Saved by the fine print)

The Big Red Commercial was great!

  22. BD says:

I have an iPhone 3Gs in a 3g coverage area and have no complaints. But I have to say those commercials are hilarious, especially the Big Red one. AT&T better step up their 3g rollout and catch up…. Quickly!

  23. iME says:

Anyone else think at&ts retaliation commercials are horrible? I can’t stand that actor guy they use.

  24. Ryan says:

More 3G coverage is their “only advantage”? if you ask me, that is the biggest advantage to have… its not like AT&T’s speed blows away verizon’s… yes its faster but not by much. OK, at&t rulls out 7.2 sometime this year, but VZW will be at least a year ahead of at&t with LTE… it’s nice oyu can browse and talk at the same time, which i admit, i do sometimes with my iPhone, but it’s certainly not a deal breaker for VZW. All that aside, a slightly better 3G network doesn’t do one bit of good if you can’t use it where you live or travel…

  25. ali says:

I don’t care whose 3g is better – I just know I’m stuck with Verizon, the Droid Eris is a piece of junk and not even close to an iPhone and I SO WISH Verizon would get the iPhone!!!

  26. Dk123dk says:

Ok I can’t verizon is being this pathic they can’t wait for 2012 so iPhone and AT&T and they want to die have fun verizon with your life while it last Lol!

  27. Bob says:

They will probably have LTE enabled phones and a good start on the network before ATT gets started on theirs and probably before ATT expands thgeir 3G to match Verizon’s/

  28. Adam says:

I’ve had both AT&T and Verizon with smartphones. In the real world, Verizon blows AT&T out of the water. I can’t even drive 30 miles off 95 without starting to drop calls with AT&T. Data was even worse. I couldn’t notice speed differences when the data was working on AT&T, but my biggest complaint was what I called the empty bars. I would have 3G with 5 bars and no data connection. Just kept timing out. Simply put someone asked me how I liked being back on Verizon the other day and my instant response was that I have dropped less calls in two weeks than I did average per day with AT&T. Just for reference I live in Baltimore and work in DC.

  29. MSL90 says:

I don’t think at&t needs to respond to any of this. I think at&t just needs to promote their services and products as if Verizon never existed. Verizon is acting a like a big red cry-baby. These commercials are good but being on at&t and having an iPhone, i am not bothered by all the drama. It is just annoying already seeing both companies battle it out on tv.

    I also agree with Waffles:

“Waffles Says: February 4th, 2010 at 7:38 pm I am slightly surprised that they’re allowed to show AT&T’s 3G network in a direct comparison to Verizon’s without showing AT&T’s edge network as well, even if it’s known as 2.5G, it’s speeds are comparable to Verizon’s “3G” coverage in those rural areas. That’s worse than misleading, its very nearly slander”

  30. L says:

iPhone should be unlocked anyways… should be able to choose what ever carrier you want!

    http://www.diverse-group.com/menu/blog.html

  31. jbrandonf says:

I love how att brags that they can use the phone and talk at the same time but for the majority of the country (on Edge) they’re no better than Verizon/Sprint users.

When I had my iPhone 2G and I was browsing the internedz calls wouldn’t even come through, they’d go straight to voicemail. At least my phone on the sprint network will let calls come through (it sorta sucks I can’t browse and talk at the same time but I haven’t needed to in the 5 months I’ve had this phone and 2. Talking&browsing is a killer on the battery)

  32. cardfan says:

Umm..all AT&T has to say is this:

We got the iphone, they don’t.

  33. ChrisCalifornia says:

I know verizon is just mad…..2012 will Be the last days of are life’s. What’s the point….The money that there spending they should just save and buy there selfs a ticket 2 Space 4 2012…..the world needs A REST WITH ALL THIS HATE…….2012…..

  34. MrC says:

While these ads are technically true the average phone user is going to think the iPhone 3G can only use 3G and so will get confused by these ads.

What gets me though is why AT&T keeps banging on about using the internet while talking, which few people probably care about, while neglecting to mention they give us iPhone users free access to more WiFi hotspots than anyone else (which are quicker than any current 3G tech)

Does data usage on CDMA even stop incoming calls like dial-up modems? I guess not, otherwise that would be a huuuuuge black mark against it.

  35. Jake says:

Did anyone catch the “download stupid stuff much better”? Obviously, we know how Verizon feels about downloading anything but office docs while mobile, lol.

  36. Sadie says:

Realistically, it will be years until AT&T’s 3G coverage map even comes close to resembling that of Verizon. Faster 3G speeds mean nothing in the vast majority of the country, where no 3G exists. And frankly, I don’t particularly trust AT&T’s claims to be improving their network; they just don’t strike me as a company that ultimately gives a damn what customers think.

  37. spook† says:

I’d rather only have AT&T’s EDGE than Verizon’s sad sorry excuse for 3G service, not to mention the shady billing and downright creepy customer service. I was a Verizon customer for 5 years, finally switched to AT&T after I had to get a lawyer to deal with Verizon’s malicious practices…I’m perfectly happy with AT&T, and honestly, I’d use a rotary phone over an iPhone before I’d ever be a Verizon customer again.

  38. Joey says:

I used to own a BB with Verizon. AT&T’s EDGE is comparable to Verizon and AT&T’s 3G is definitely a breeze compared to Verizon’s sluggish EVDO.

Why not AT&T once and for all compare its EDGE and 3G and tell everyone that as what VZW claims, their EVDO Rev.1 bla-bla-bla is nothing spectacular than our own EDGE, and here is whole EDGE+3G map.

  39. Macboy15 says:

@sadie Doyou have AT&T? If you do why? In every post even if it has nothing to do with AT&T you have something to say. If your not happy with them then go to verizon. I swear you people are cry baby morons. Instead of bitching go elsewhere. There are many other carriers out there. Dump your iPhone and go. Wah wah wah bunch of babies.

  40. Earless Puppy says:

@ryan do you really think Verizon will have 100% 4g coverage? Major cities will have it and if you leave that city with a 4g phone you will be screwed without service… lets see how that works for verizon. Phones will not be CDMA slash 4G dual band

  41. Thedeadbaby says:

I love how they directly attacked apple and the iPhone this time. I’m sure that will get them the iPhone really soon. Dumbasses.

  42. KC says:

    Versions a big joke

  43. Chrisr says:

    Wack!!!!!!!!!!!

Sent on an iPhone with ATT 3g

  44. Skeptic one says:

Entertaining? Yes. Reasoning: a thorough market share butt whoopin’ of VZ by AT&T in consecutive quarters. VZ was happy to pontificate “It’s the Network”, which is certainly excellent, for the past 3 years. Why the new tune: iPhone envy, #2 in sales and now #2 in churn. Churn means customers leaving their existing provider to change to a new provider, as in everyone leaving Sprint in droves for years. Now VZ users are moving to AT&T at a rate of 4 to 1, can you hear me now? All the attack ads and negative hype don’t seem to resonate with AT&T customers, do they? “And the truth shall set you free…”

  45. G says:

“Verizon’s ONLY advantage?” lol. I love my iPhone but it’s clear who’s cutting your checks. Apple is AT&T’s only advantage. They should just hand the company over. I’m sure we’d all get better service if Steve Jobs were at the helm.

  46. Desmond says:

@Skeptic One. Thanks for explaining the fact of the matter. Verizon has better coverage in some areas ATT has better coverage in some areas. That coverage map is ridiculous and even if was the case why are people chancing great service for supposedly spotty coverage for an iPhone? That’s comletely insane. And might I add which they also claim doesn’t do enough as a smartphone that by the way Verizon Wants on their network? The other side of it is couldn’t Verizon stop making these retarded commercials and use the money to offset the costs that they are not willing to pay for that said device(iPhone) because if we go by rumors they have been negotiating with Apple for their device and now devices for over a year?

  47. jbrandonf says:

    @skeptic one

to be fair Verizon hasn’t had a decent phone lineup since I can remember..remember the voyager? Yea..POS.

Now they have a couple android phones, something that can go head to head with the iphone spec-wise (and arguably UI-wise) and they marketed the hell out of it. I don’t expect iphone-like sales but it’s without a doubt V’s spotlight phone.

  48. TK says:

The Big Red commercial was awesome. While AT&T has Luke Wilson doing witty little shenanigans. Verizon has these commercials, which are funny and cleaver as hell, like the Misfit Toys and Big Red. That Big Red one put a smile on my face, that was amazingly cleaver.

  49. Gregory says:

So I have the Droid on Verizon, and on Verizons coverage map, I’m supposed to have full access to 3G. Well, I’m lucky if I get one bar of 3G when I’m home. On the other hand, when I had the iPhone, I was not in a 3G coverage area according to AT&T, however, I always had 5 bars of 3G service at home and within a 20 mile radius of my home. These commercials are getting just a tad ridiculous. AT&T has faster service. Period. My Droid blows. I mean I like some things about it but its slow as hell, even when I have 4 bars of 3G. AT&T shouldn’t continue this commercial war though, they really should spend their money on improving their network so they can finally come out of the dog house. I can not wait to go back to my iPhone (which I planned to do today, but apparently according to AT&T I have to wait 90 days after my past cancellation to sign a new contract).

  50. aj says:

im not an AT&T fan or Verizon fan, but these are just getting old…its like all Verizon has on anyone is coverage. its really making me like Verizon less and less

  51. Earless puppy says:

@kev will old gsm phones run on 4g?

  52. jack says:

Love these ads and the whole competition thing makes for great entertainment.

Hopefully it will motivate AT&T to make some good ads of their own — sans Luke Wilson.

  53. Martin says:

these commercials are bologna. why do I care about the most coverage if I’m always within the same area. I’d much rather have a faster 3G.

  54. Karen says:

Would you like some fun games and humour, check out this new iphone app called iSICKO http://bit.ly/986BGN

  55. Ron says:

AT&T made a marketing error with 3G. They should have registered a trademark for their 3G network, so Verizon could not call their slow network the same thing. As it is, AT&T is hard-pressed to explain to people that their 3G network is much faster than Verizon’s…sounds like puffery. When the next tech rolls out, AT&T should call it something, register it, make theirs the best, and sue Verizon if they name their inferior network the same thing.

  56. Jailbreaker says:

You people are upset about these commercials?Wow, you guys need some douches, acting like girls & all. These are good commercials.

  57. Lolipopjones says:

Verizon can show more coverage all they want but the sad truth is most of the use Population has no need of a service that large.

For people who say At&t is behing on 3G coverage. CDMA towers have 30 mile coverage while UMTS towers have 12 mile coverage. CDMA 3G started is older then UMTS as EVDO Rev O was out during the time of EDGE… It was made as a competitor of EDGE and GSM did not have UMTS as an available option. What does that all me? When At&t made its EDGE Network VzW countered in the same year with making its EVDO Rev O network. When it came time for At&t’s adoption to 3G they had to build an entirely new network overtop of their EDGE network. VzW only had to software upgrade and backhaul upgrade their EVDO Rev O network to EVDO Rev A.

  58. Lolipopjones says:

    Blah spelling errors!

  59. Ryan says:

    @Ron

Do you think AT&T came up with the name “3G” and they are the only ones who should be able to use it? All 3G means is it is the 3rd generation of mobile telecommunications and data technology. Each carrier has their own versions of 3G, which progressed from the technology they built their network from.

  60. I says:

I got a iPhone on AT&T and a blackberry tour on Verizon i live in NYC and to be honest my blackberry loads things wayyyyy faster then my iPhone on 3G but the iPhone is the best phone i ever used….

  61. kev says:

@Earless puppy. No they wont but ATT will keep 3G up as well while they transition to 4G. So old GSM phones will still work. BTW LTE is based on GSM, so the new LTE VZW phones will have a SIM card

  62. Stephen says:

I’m waiting for some anti t-mobile ads :-D

  63. Lady Kaede says:

Still the same old story — all of the AT&T and Verizon adds are misleading in one way or another. If you live where there’s AT&T 3G coverage (except SF and NYC, apparently), their 3G is better than Verizons. If you live anywhere else, you can get get slower Verizon 3G or you’ll be on AT&Ts Edge network. If you need or want an Apple product with a cell radio, you got no choice, it’s AT&T. Some great smartphones are on other carriers if AT&T is crappy where you are, but very few are close to as good as the iPhone. And only Apple’s got the iPad. All the AT&T & Verizon ads obscure rather than explain these simple truths. And the Droid and Apple ads aren’t always a lot better.

  64. tim says:

3G??? Ya’ll still worried about 3G? Sprint 4G Rocks!!! Their all you can use rate plan covers EVERYTHING. Perfect, no they are not, let me know when you find the perfect carrier. In the mean time, VZW and ATT and worry about 3G. By the way, sign an exclusive agreement with Apple for mutiple years and your competitors will expose your weakness!!

  65. Luke Wilson says:

Hi, Luke Wilson here. I know a lot of you have been wondering when AT&T was actually going to come out with a clever commercial. Well, just keep an eye out over the next few days for a new commercial and a few more of my hipster tweed jackets! I might even have another washed up actor joining me and defending AT&T’s great EDGE network!
