Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

With iOS 7.1 Apple's added a new feature to Siri, their personal digital assistant — the ability to manually control how long Siri listens. The concept is remarkably similar to the old push-to-talk systems, just hold down the Home button, start talking, and then let go of the Home button and Siri...

How to manually control when Siri listens to you with iOS 7.1

Ever had a time where you're using Siri and your iPhone or iPad doesn't stop listening when you want it to? Wither the Siri API?

Wither the Siri API?

In 2011 Apple introduced Siri, their virtual personal assistant, with the iPhone 4s, and two years and two versions of iOS later, including this year's iOS 7, and no public application programming interfaces (API) have been surfaced for developers. That means customers like you and me still can't...

iOS 7.1 makes British Siri more human, and female!

iOS 7.1 brought many things for many people, but for us British folks Siri got a noticeable update. Until now, we've been given only one choice for how Siri sounds over here; the robotic sounding male. With iOS 7.1 a few regions, the UK included, got improvements to the quality of the voice...

Siri isn't just a Google killer, it's a potential gold mine

Last year, after Apple announced Siri, I wrote about it's long term, potentially game-changing business implications for Apple. Specifically, how Siri wasn't a voice control system, but a powerful, Pixar-coated way For Apple to both intermediate and starve their biggest rival, Google, and gain the most valuable data in modern business -- customer insight.

How to use Siri faster by talking less

If you watched the new iPhone 4S commercials that Apple released last night, the ones that feature John Malkovich asking Siri for jokes and about the meaning of life, you might have noticed the way in which he was asking. In short, it was short. David Chartier certainly noticed:

Joke features him speaking a series of one-word commands to Siri that practically feel like verbal equivalents of tapping on a particular app to get a particular piece of information. "Weather." "Evening." "Linguica." "Joke." Apple seems to want to remind us that, underneath the clever responses and artificial personality, Siri is a tool meant to help us get more done with less.

While helping John Malkovich plan a night out, Siri shows him her funny side.

After John Malkovich gets philosophical, Siri is ready with an answer.

With classical music playing in the background, Joke sees Malkovich ask Siri for the weather, for his evening calendar, restaurants featuring linguica, and then for a joke.

IBM bans the use of Siri on its networks due to privacy concerns

If you work for IBM, you are welcome to bring your iPhone 4S to work with you but forget about using Apple’s voice driven digital assistant, Siri. IBM has banned the use of Siri on all of its networks due to concerns over privacy. Siri works by sending anything you ask it to a data center in North Carolina; after that, no one really knows exactly what happens with that data once it has been dealt with.

How to set up, configure, secure, and start using Siri

Siri is the flagship feature of Apple's iPhone 4S. Even though it's still in beta, one look at Apple's advertising shows just how important they consider their digital personal assistant. Siri six months later: Community report card

Siri, the iPhone 4S' flagship feature has been on the market now for 6 months. On one hand, Siri is absolutely amazing -- the first real virtual personal assistant with a personality right out of Pixar. On the other hand, Siri is obviously still in beta and often fails or works just enough to frustrate more than any outright failure. That makes it an odd choice for a flagship feature, but given the lack of a physical redesign and the obvious potential for awesome demos, rightly or wrongly, Siri was what Apple had to work with.

But does it work for us?

Six months later, how much are you using Siri? [Poll]

How much are you using Siri?

It's been six months since Apple released the iPhone 4S and that means it's been six months since Apple launched Siri, their virtual personal assistant. Siri does a lot of things very well -- it's the fastest way to set alarms or Reminders, and an easy way to call someone, or respond to text messages while otherwise occupied.

However, it still isn't very consistent -- it will read SMS but not email, it will send SMS and Email but not tweets. And while it's added Japanese to its list of supported languages, that's all its added. Still no Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, no Mandarin Chinese, or other popular languages. Even for the languages Siri does support, it's still hit or miss at times, and while it works wonderfully for some users, it doesn't seem to work at all for others. And, of course, the new iPad didn't get Siri at all...

Apple is still focusing most of their iPhone 4S marketing on Siri, with high profile celebrity ads involving Samuel L. Jackson, Zooey Deschenel, and... Santa. And according to our own Ally Kazmucha's exclusive talk with Siri co-founder and former Apple employee, Dag Kittlaus, there's more to come.

But for now we just want to know how much you're using Siri? Do you rely on her (or him, depending on your language) all day, every day? Or do you use Siri so little you've forgotten it even exists? Vote in the poll up top and give us your honest opinion in our Siri Forum -- how much do you use Siri?
