Rumor: Verizon Negotiating for iPhone in 2010?

USA Today rumors hope for the US' largest network:

Verizon (VZ) and Apple (AAPL) are discussing the possible development of an iPhone for Verizon, with the goal of introducing it next year, people familiar with the situation say.

Talks, claim their unnamed sources, began before Steve Jobs' leave of absence. How would this effect the major players:

According to the Wall Street Journal (via Apple Insider), Verizon thinks that technology may finally give them a chance for a second bite at this not-at-all proverbial Apple after all. At least CEO Ivan Seidenberg really, really thinks so.

Macworld has a great article up today about the arrival of Skype on the iPhone (and soon the BlackBerry) and what the widespread availability of VoIP (voice over IP) clients -- which eschew the traditional phone lines to send talk via data instead -- means for cell providers like AT&T, Verizon, O2, Rogers, etc. who've made tons of traditional money billing us all by the minute.

One common future seen for cell companies is that of "dumb pipes" -- like DSL or cable companies that provide bandwidth but few if any premium services. Verizon shows how far (and foolish) they'll go to avoid that fate:

Our newest sibling site, NokiaExperts.com has linked up an article suggesting Nokia and Verizon's previous iClonic efforts were just generations one, and now they're preparing to transform and merge into... A Nokizon (Verkia?) uber-iPhone killer?

It seems that Verizon may have deep hard feelings against the Apple and iPhone exclusivity deal and appears to be making a deal with Nokia to create a 4G LTE (long term evolution) touchscreen device for the US market.

Verizon Asking Former Customers if They Would Have Stayed for iPhone?

Ouch. Don't know what else to say. Verizon told Apple they didn't want the iPhone so Apple went to AT&T (and the mostly GSM world still thanks Jobs for that). To make up for it, Verizon -- almost 2 years later -- rushed the BlackBerry Storm to market. Still, during the iPhone 3G's second quarter, it outsold the BlackBerry Storm in the US by almost 2 to 1 (1.9 million activations on AT&T vs. 1 million in sales on Verizon).

You've told us and told us you want the iPhone on Verizon. There's two reasons that hasn't happened already. AT&T has exclusive rights in the US (Verizon, stupidly, turned down the iPhone initially), and the iPhone is a GSM device while Verizon runs a CDMA network (think Mac vs. PC). And, hey, Sprint can't even get simultaneous voice and data going on the Pre with CDMA/EVDO, okay?

UPDATE: Verizon has just announced their 4G/LTE plans for end-of-year 2010, which may make their network compatible with future iPhone models. More details here.
