Verizon Q2 2011 results: 2.3 million iPhones activated

Verizon has now joined Apple and AT&T in reporting their quarterly earnings, and the big news for us is that they activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 devices. That's up from last quarter, but perhaps not as many as expected.

In the follow up, new Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam acted shocked -- shocked we tell you -- that there was no iPhone 5 this summer. He, like the rest of us, expect it this fall. Given Verizon only launched iPhone 4 in February, over a half-a-year later than AT&T, it's hard to believe they were completely out of the loop on Apple's roadmap this time around.

Could iPhone 5 land on Sprint as well this year?

Shing Yin, a Citadel Securities analyst, thinks a Sprint iPhone deal may not be that far off, perhaps as soon as this year, which would likely mean a CDMA iPhone 5. After Verizon finally shipped the iPhone 4, we found out T-Mobile might be getting one, either on their own or as part of the ongoing T-Mobile and AT&T merger. That leaves Sprint sitting alone in the corner.

Verizon dropping iPhone 4 price to $150?

It appears VZBuzz has gotten their hands on some Verizon marketing material showing the iPhone 4 price dropping to $150.99. The screen also shows a plethora of Android and Blackberry price drops as well. I don't find it hard to believe this is legitimate as many carriers and retailers have been known to drop the price of the iPhone in anticipation of a new hardware announcement -- like iPhone 5 -- in order to clear out inventory.

Verizon currently offers refurbished iPhone 4's for $150, so could wesee a price drop in those as well?

TiPb Asks: Are you concerned with iPhone data caps?

AT&T transitioned to data caps and tiered plans just over a year ago and come this summer, Verizon will follow suit. Are you concerned? International iPhone users have had to deal with data caps and tiered plans for years, but in the US "unlimited data" was pretty much expected. It framed users' habits. Streaming internet radio, watching internet video, tethering on the down-low... You could do all of that without the slightest thought.

iOS surging as Android declines

Preliminary market share results are in and it looks as though Apple is surging while Android declines. With the release of the iPhone on the Verizon network less than six months ago, reports are saying the device is putting a halt to the sale of Android devices and with the much anticipated iPhone 5 coming soon it could put Android even further away from the momentum Apple is gaining with the iPhone.
