Bluetooth 4.0 gets spec'd, 3.0 still not implemented

Bluetooth now has an official specification for version 4.0, currently scheduled for release at the end of the year. Of course Bluetooth 3.0 was released in April 2009 and it hasn't really caught on yet, especially when you consider most mobile devices -- including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, still use Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

This new 4.0 spec does promise reduced power consumption so maybe Apple (and others) decided to skip the previous generation and upgrade straight to this one? We'll find out next year...

  1. Reduced power consumption? Anything else on the cards like maybe a speed/range boost?!

I heard a rumor that iPhone OS 4.0 now allows volume control via Bluetooth. Can anyone confirm? I have wanted to buy Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 Bluetooth headphones for a while, but you cannot control the volume on either headset or iPhone so volume is 100% max all the time.

It's pathetic Apple hasn't allowed the iPhone to have full Bluetooth profile (e.g., AVRCP). It is an mp3 player afterall. What a joke.

    Thanks.

    Nope dude!

  4. Wyatt says:

@Jtz5 Yes, you can. I have been able to change the volume while using my BlueAnt Q1 and Mototrola S9-HD via the iPhone.

The thing is, is that the headset volume does not change but the volume coming from the iPhone will. So you can leave the headset at a desired listening/talking level and change the streamed Bluetooth volume to something else on the iPhone.

I,Steve Jobs, is ending support for the closed Bluetooth platform to the more open platform very few people have heard of a say I invented and implemented the best.
