Apple hires THX's Tomlinson Holman -- bring the noise!
It's ironic how the company that brought us the iPod has never really had great speakers (or earbuds!) but Apple might be about to change that in a big way by bringing in the man behind Lucasfilm's amazing THX audio quality program, Tomlinson Holman. According to Chief TWiT Leo Laporte:
I have it on good authority that Tomlinson Holman (of THX fame) is joining Apple to run audio. Major upgrade.
With HP's TouchPad getting Beats by Dr. Dre, and even BlackBerry besting Apple when it comes to speaker quality, this can't happen soon enough. Let's just hope this is about more than just iTunes audio meeting THX standards, but about giving iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch a complete speaker makeover as well!
Your audience is listening, Apple!

Finally. Though we probably won't have anything new speaker-wise until iPhone 6 at the earliest. Still, gives us something to look forward to.
Done leave out the Macbook Pro's also
Apple HiFi needs a revision I love my HiFi and but not holding my breath for Apple to do it again.
Hells yes!
I'm sorry, but I'd rather have "just iTunes audio meeting THX standards" than better ear buds. I think I speak for most audiophiles when I say that.
Agree. I've always used my own headphones with my iProducts. Let's get better source audio first.
What good is great sound in the iTunes files if nothing Apple makes can reproduce it? Like Beats, it needs to be a certified pipeline that ensures quality from source to encoding to output.
Boom! I love my hi-fi's too!
Because you can play those files though non-Apple devices. Shocking, I know.
To Apple dude. What good is it to Apple. It would be like making great looking content and putting really bad displays on all their devices.
Just because it's an iProduct doesn't necessarily mean we have to use it's iearphones
We need smaller earbuds they are to big
Awesome. Good thing I have thx certified speakers. This is great news
Holman is an audio carney-barker, a blowhard self-promoter in an industry of big egos. I have difficulty imagining what kind of “science” this grossly unscientific marketer can bring to Apple. Most engineering at Apple toils in anonymity, for good reason. Holman’s bio says he’s responsible for Audessy, another so-called audio advance that most acousticians agree doesn’t work. He was fired by THX, his so-called 10.2 system is a fraud, and he's got little respect of his peers in the engineering world.
