Apple TV magically appears on Amazon's best-selling gadget list

Apple TV magically appears on Amazon's best-selling gadget list

Apple TV is currently ranked in the number 12 position on Amazon's best-selling gadget list. What makes this so interesting is that Apple TV wasn't even listed at all until now, despite its sales numbers. When that was discovered and began to be questioned on several prominent online sites, the Apple TV magically showed up. (Amazon has yet to respond to questions on why Apple TV was originally excluded from their list.)

Also an interesting bit is that the competing Roku XDS and Boxee Box are also on the list, though below Apple TV's position.

i3DG to bring 3D content to iPhone, without the need for glasses [video]

i3DG to bring 3D content to iPhone, without the need for glasses [video]

How would you fancy viewing 3D content on your iPhone without the need for any nerdy glasses or a hardware upgrade? Well, Media artist Jitsuro Mase has invented an add on for iOS devices, which he is calling i3DG.

i3DG is a playful analog extension to an iPhone or an iPodTouch, converting its 2D display into a layered 3D view. Using the old technique of placing a half-silvered mirror at a 45-degree angle in front of an image, in a new context, the project extends upon 3D displays and iPhones. As a peripheral gadget, i3DG can support a wide range of different applications, from 3D videos and animations to accelerometer-based games.

The system used is known as the Pepper Ghost technique, more information can be found at the Pepper Ghost wiki page, it is all a bit of smoke and mirrors, well without the smoke anyway.

All that is needed to watch 3D content on an iOS device is the i3DG which is a small slip on box that contains the mirrors and of course media created in the correct format; which apparently is extremely easy to create.

The device has already won a honorary mention at Ars Electronica Festival 2010, it will be shown off again at The International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2011.

Take a look at the video after the break and let us know in the comments if you can see yourself using something like this.

Facebook for iPhone adds account and privacy settings, fixed photo upload bug

Facebook for iPhone adds account and privacy settings, fixed photo upload bug

Facebook has once again updated their iPhone and iPod touch app, this time adding access to account and privacy settings and fixing a photo upload bug. The new version (3.3.2 for those keeping track at home) lets you access the settings via the Account button at the top left of the home screen, but then simply loads the Facebook.com web page. It's nowhere as good a user experience as if they added those settings to the app proper, but it does mean Facebook won't have to update the app whenever they update those pages (it also means you can use it as a way to move between the app interface and the website without having to jump to Safari).

The photo upload bug fix is nice to see. The "no iPad version" bug persists, however.

If you've tried out the settings, and if photo uploads are finally working for you the way they should, let us know!

Regarding iOS 4.2, delays, and why this is how it's supposed to work

Apple never announced a public release date for iOS 4.2 other than "November". Rumors suggested that last Friday, November 12 would be the big day. The Gold Master (GM) had been released over a week before, Mac OS X 10.6.5 showed up last Wednesday, iOS 4.2 compatible apps began populating the App Store, and signs pointed to iTunes 10.1 arriving any minute as well. (It did, last Friday).

But no iOS 4.2.
