Apple Posts New iPhone Ads

Apple has finally deviated from the instructional ads, instead moving to a man-on-the-street system of advertising. The three ads are well-done, :

iPhone To Get 2nd Party Apps?

iPhone To Get 2nd Party Apps?

I've claimed over and over that the iPhone is built to buy things from iTunes. One of the things that we should be able to buy from iTunes is programs. Games, if that's your thing; mental diversions. I'm glad to report that 9to5mac.com says that it's coming. Of course, they call it 3rd party development, which is kind of a misnomer. If it requires that a developer sign a contract and get Apple's blessing just to get the development tools, it's a lot more like 2nd party development. It would bring the iPhone and iPod Touch to feature parity with the iPod Classic and Nano, so I'm glad to see it, assuming it's true (which I do).

Time Warner Building iTunes Competitor

Time Warner Building iTunes Competitor

Time Warner is building an iTunes competitor. You know, sometimes I get irked when I see websites use the word "competitor" so loosely. The geniuses at Time Warner Cable have had a long time to think about music and they've had a long time to watch Apple's iTunes and mirror its success. So, they've unveiled a service that is:

iPhone Not Coming to France?

figure 1: Apple and Orange?

It was widely expected that Apple would have some happy things to say about the iPhone and French mobile operator Orange last week at Apple Expo Paris. But, the expo came and went without any sort of iPhone news whatsoever. It looks like we may now know the reason why.

p> Apple may have problems with a French law that

Free Wallpaper Friday: The "What You Get" Edition

This is the first weekly wallpaper installment I've publishing without having first tested them on my own iPhone, because I seem to be ahem iPhoneless at the moment. So this week's gallery is a "What you get" release. I hope they look good. If you don't like them, keep your receipt and I will refund your... wait, what the hell am I saying? They're free!

Verizon Unveils "iPhone Killer", Apple Shuts Down iPhone Production, Calls it Quits

Folks, I have some news that will come as terrible blow to everyone. Verizon has just introduced what it claims to be a true no shit honest to goodness iPhone killer. Yes, I know... I'm in shock myself. Now, this is no ordinary iPhone killer. No siree, Bob. Nope, this revolutionary new phone from LG, dubbed Voyager, offers a set of features not found on anything else on the market; it has an HTML web browser (yes, real HTML, not that fake HTML found on other fones phones). It plays MP3 and WMA audio. It takes photos. And steal yourselves... it even has a MicroSD slot.

Third Party Application Support is is Not Coming to iPhone

Speaking of rumors, here's another bit of tittle-tattle to roll your eyes at. A site called 9to5Mac - apparently the site shuts down after 5 and heads to the nearest bar - claims that Apple is currently working with developers to bring application support to iPhone, available through iTunes. Sound plausible? Yes, it does. But then again, that was almost a given from the beginning, so it takes little creative imagination to fabricate such rumors.

Leopard Watch: Apple Lets Cat Out of the Bag October 26

Leopard Watch: Apple Lets Cat Out of the Bag October 26

Mark your calendars, Apple fanboys. A certain feline themed operating system is ready to pounce on Macs everywhere, as its appointed date with destiny draws nigh. Sources have pinned October 26 as the date Apple will officially launch OSX (10.5) Leopard. Every Mac rumor site from here to Nepal is claiming confirmation by "sources." Yeah, sources. I have mine too and they prove every bit as reliable as a magic 8 ball. The thing I love about Mac rumor sites is that when one reports a rumor, it sets off a chain reaction of counter-confirmations; as if they can somehow collectively will the rumor into fact by supporting one another's claim. You'd be better off consulting the giant clown head at McDonald's; it won't give you an answer but it will take your order.

Jobs' Reality Distortion Field is Failing?

Jobs' Reality Distortion Field is Failing?

The New York Times has a neat article on third party applications and how the iPhone is currently the only device on AT&T's network that doesn't support them. The article has some good things to say about Palm too, which I always welcome. The big gist of it is how Jobs' quote from a January Newsweek interview doesn't jive with reality:

Apple: Pull iPhone Firmware 1.1.1?

There are some reports that some folks are finding that the 1.1.1 firmware update for the iPhone has been pulled from Apple, and that the most recent version of iTunes is now reporting 1.0.2 as the most recent version. And if they haven't, maybe they should.

iPhone: Widgets in January

iPhone: Widgets in January

Ars Technica has sources that indicate that Apple is prepping Mobile Safari to run applications and web pages offline. You know, widgets. These widgets will use the same technologies as the AJAX web apps that are out there now -- HTML, CSS, asynchronous Javascript and XML, cookies, etc., but with the added bonus of a little extra local storage. Maybe some javascript functions that allow you to access the actual API of the phone for contact / calendar integration and the like will make it as well.

iPhone Skin for RIM Blackberry

iPhone Skin for RIM Blackberry

The people at rogersmj.com have hacked their Blackberries to get the iPhone Home screen interface on their Blackberry. If you have a hunger for the iPhone user interface on your Blackberry, they are your people to thank. Apparently, it's a bad idea to install if you have an OS older than 4.2.1; they list compatible models as 8800, 8700, 8100, 8300, and 8380 (those numbers include the Pearl and Curves). It's always best to download these things sooner than later, in case Apple lawyers show up, so get on over there. [via]
