Verizon: Mandatory face-to face training Jan 25 to Feb 4... for iPhone?

Verizon is having another one of their mandatory face-to-face training sessions for an "iconic pre-order", this one scheduled for January 25 to February 4, 2011, and it could just be for the Verizon iPhone. That's what many seem to believe, at least.

An alternative could be the Android-powered Thunderbolt, but we're being told February is blackout month for Verizon which has not been the case before.

This source has been good to SPE in the past but if there's anything we've learned from years and years of rumors -- we'll believe the Verizon iPhone is here when Steve Jobs holds it up, and/or it goes live on Apple.

TiPb asks: What's your favorite tech item in your home?

If you could only keep one piece of technology would that be? Your iPad, your iPhone or perhaps something else? We have been asking each other that question a lot lately on our podcasts and TiPb TV. So I wanted to know what was everyone else's most favored piece of technology. For me it is my iPhone. I keep it close by me at all times and it works as my personal mini computer, my phone and my entertainment device. What tech would be your sole survivor?

Hands-on with dummy iPad 2 at CES 2011

No, it's not a working iPad 2 but I did just go hands on with a dummy unit that could just be very close to what the final iPad 2 will look like when Apple announces it this spring. It does match up with rumored features -- tapered edges, flat back, cameras back and front, and an amped up speaker grill at the bottom. Check out the video above and pictures below, and let us know what you think. Is this what iPad 2 will look like and if so, what's your take on the changes?

[Thanks to Arn from MacRumors for the lead on this!]

Motorola Xoom brings iPad competition - TiPb at CES 2011

Our good friend Phil over at AndroidCentral managed to capture a video showing off the Motorola Xoom tablet at CES. The Motorola Xoom could bring some real competition to not only the iPad but the iPad 2 as well. Packing a dual core 1Ghz processor, 10.1-inch (1280 x 800 and 16:10 aspect ratio) display, 2-mega-pixel front facing camera, 5-mega-pixel rear facing camera, microSD slot, HDMI out and a whopping 1024Mb of RAM.

The Xoom will run Android Honeycomb and supports Adobe Flash. Availability is said to be first quarter of this year and exclusive to Verizon. No details on pricing yet.

Strangely, LTE won't come immediately and will require a *

The video is after the break,  make sure you visit AndroidCentral for more details and hands on pictures, then pop back and  let us know what you think of this one in the comments!

Apple denying retail store vacation time for CDMA Verizon iPhone launch?

Apple has issued a vacation time blackout period from the last week of January to the middle of February where retail employees without seniority won't be able to take time off, presumably to ensure employee coverage for the first major product launch of 2011. Could this be in preparation for a Verizon iPhone launch?

Apple is quietly prohibiting vacation days for some retail employees for three weeks beginning later this month, a move that could foreshadow a significant product introduction in the coming weeks.
