Element Case shows off Vapor for iPhone 4

TiPb readers will remember Element Case for their original Liquid case for iPhone and the Joule stand for iPad, and you just had to know they wouldn't sit out something as sexy as iPhone 4, right? Enter Vapor:

Available in a wide array of custom color options and custom features, the Vapor consists of a solid, CNCd aluminum frame made from aircraft grade metals lined with a new, shock-absorbent liner material to protect and stylize.

And yes, it'll also insulate the iPhone 4 antenna band to prevent any attenuation-related issues.

We'll be getting our geeky little hands on some soon, and thanks to their usual awesomeness, doing a give away just for you. In the meantime, in joy the pics!

UPDATE; Element Case just sent us one more pic, an exclusive look at the cutouts. Check it out below.

Mirror FREE for iPhone 4 now in App Store

Mirror FREE for iPhone 4 now in App Store

The minute Steve Jobs showed off the iPhone 4 front-facing camera you knew it was coming, right? No, not FaceTime, a mirror app that would use said camera to let you check yourself out in full VGA glory.

I'm guessing there'll be a bunch of these soon enough, but when David Barnard of App Cubby and Layton Duncan of Polar Bear Farm come together to do one, and base it on their awesome KaleidoVid code base, you just know it's going to be one bad @$$ mirror app.

Why not all iOS 4 compatible app are "awesome"

Why not all iOS 4 compatible app are "awesome"

Not all app in Apple's growing "awesome iOS 4 apps" list are "awesome" -- at least not in their implementation of iOS 4 or for iPhone 4.

We touched on this already in our iPhone 4 review -- in iOS 4, Apple has set up several types of behavior that, when taken together, create the multitasking experience for the user. What the user sees is the fast app switcher that launches when you double click the home button, and the carousel animation that sends one app to the "background" and another to the "foreground".

For this to work in a user-friendly way, however, developers need to implement something called "saved state", so a snapshot of the app's current position is stored in memory, and when you return to it, restored to exactly that position in the app. This is supposed to eliminate what used to happen with 3rd party apps in previous versions of iOS -- when you left an App Store app and came back to it later, it relaunched from the beginning. This was especially frustrating, for example, if you were playing a game, got interrupted by a phone call, and then went back to your game only to have to start over.

Ideally it shouldn't happen any more on iOS 4 compatible apps. But it is. What some developers are presenting as updates, and Apple is listing as iOS 4 compatible apps, aren't implementing saved state.

While I'm not certain, it appears the baseline for iOS 4 compatibility is simply that the app isn't supposed to crash when launched in iOS 4.

And that's not enough.

LogMeIn Ignition has just been updated for iPhone and iPad specifically with iOS 4 support.

Normally, this would not necessarily be too exciting, except I just got done testing this release. I am very excited to report that I was able to log in to my remote desktop, then check mail and other apps. Put the iPhone to sleep, come back minutes later and open LogMeIn Ignition and... my desktop was still there!

Jonathan Ive discusses iPhone 4 design

Jonathan Ive discusses iPhone 4 design

Core77 spoke with Apple Senior Vice-President of Design, Jonathan Ive, about iPhone 4's including the Retina Display, custom stainless steel antenna array, aluminosilicate glass front and back, and even the microSIM tray.

"A big part of the experience of a physical object has to do with the materials. [At Apple] we experiment with and explore materials, processing them, learning about the inherent properties of the material--and the process of transforming it from raw material to finished product; for example, understanding exactly how the processes of machining it or grinding it affect it. That understanding, that preoccupation with the materials and processes, is [very] essential to the way we work."

iPhone 4 antenna problems clarified (a bit)

iPhone 4 antenna problems clarified (a bit)

Anandtech has done some testing to try and find out what's happening with iPhone 4 signal attenuation and related antenna reception problems, and come to two equal yet opposing conclusions:

Holding the iPhone 4 without a case, in your left hand, crossing the black strip can result in a worst case drop of 24 dBm in signal. [...] The fact of the matter is that either the most sensitive region of the antenna should have an insulative coating, or everyone should use a case. For a company that uses style heavily as a selling point, the latter isn't an option. And the former would require an unprecedented admission of fault on Apple's part.

How to trouble-shoot iOS 4 battery life problems

How to trouble-shoot iOS 4 battery life problems

Simple question - how's your battery life under iOS 4? We keep wanting better hardware and more features -- and better battery life at the same time. How did iOS 4 deliver for you?

If the answer is not too well, we've got some steps you can use to try and help. We did this last year for iPhone 3.0, and it's worth doing again.

Now, if your battery drain is caused simply by use -- you're running background music or navigation like a fiend, for example, your only choice is to get a few more charging cables or battery extenders. If, however, you're doing roughly the same things you've always done and getting substantially less battery life for your troubles, there's a chance a few troubleshooting steps might just help get your power problems back under control.
