They could track MAC addresses if they really wanted to, they know what MAC blocks they’ve put in iPhones. One could always spoof that as well though.

Except that I know many people with iPhones and their phone number is not confidential, so how can AT&T crack down on them for my abuses? Not that I would do such a think since I too have an iPhone and would use my own number for my abuses.

Its more than just setting the browser type, you also have to have an iPhone phone number. Now that isn’t much harder to come up with, but at least that gives ATT some leverage to crack down on abusers.

Probably has something to do with the service being so easy to spoof via a laptop and enabling free wifi access to anyone that knows how to spoof their browser type. Set it to Safari Mobile iPhone and you could get free WIFI.
