Basically they need a try it before you buy it feature, and get rid of the publishing restrictions. Why pay 99 cents to god knows how much if you don't know if the app will behave the way you want it to?

Many apps are for services. I have seen several in the medical industry that link into servers for the tasks they do, it is those services that some want.

What they need to embrace is the backyard programmer who does codes for fun, or his own functionality. Why spend the time only to pay $99 to publish it for free.

That is the reason people jailbreak there phone. More open programing.

Though I must admit Apple has always had the best backdoor programmers as far back at the late 80's. I remember having Mac OS 6 where programmers gave me the ability to customize every aspect of the finder, and through most of the 90's had triple the shareware apps of DOS/Windows.

What about finally implementing a subscription mechanism? Some developers stay away because the technology (aka: costs) of providing their service cannot support unlimited use for life, for a fixed one-time price - not an affordable one, anyway.

If they could charge less up front, but continue generating revenue over time from each user (to support the service) this would open the floodgates for more complex and useful apps, while keeping them affordable.

Advertising in the app is not a solution - the paltry, uncertain returns don't justify the resources needed to create the app. It would be much better if there was a mechanism so that users could continue to pay for functionality they find useful.

I suspect that there will be limited multitasking on the existing 2g/3g and a larger amount on the iPhone 3.0 with its improved hardware. I suspect that MMS and tethering will show up (tethering for an additional fee of course), I'm not sure copy-paste are ready, but I would like to see it. I hope that they go ahead with an 800x480 screen, possibly some form of OLED though maybe not 'til next round. It would certainly help keep battery use in check.

Well since i'm an iphone user and all (despite me moving to the Pre eventually), i'll give an honest opinion:

MMS (will be funny to listen to those praise this after saying they didn't need it.)

Tethering (mainstream users may not have a clue what this is. Expect at&t to insanely charge for it)

Turn by turn software (just a hunch)

Video recording (should be simple enough to do)

Stereo BT (obviously for more sales even though i don't think it adds much for most users)

Minor tweaks here and there to look different.

That's about it. Hard to speculate on any hardware coming but should be beefed up in processor & memory if apple wants to include multitasking NEXT year. I think they need more time as they have to tread carefully there. Lots of things could go wrong and they need to keep the UI simple as possible.

And i think 4.0 OS with multitasking will not be possible on original iphone or iphone 3g. But will on this year's iphone and next year's iphone forcing the upgrade.

Never heard of SongBird then? It's pretty impressive for how long its been around and it can sync iPods and other PMPs (not iPhone yet). There are some things it doesn't do yet (but that list gets smaller every month) and a lot of things it does that iTunes does not. In a few months it will be that mythical product that you speak of.

The fanboi shit does no one any good, competition makes all the companies work harder for our attention/money and THAT is good for all of us.

I have been on the iPhone ban wagon since the first iPhone back in 2007. I have waited and waited for Apple to allow the iPhone to do simple cell phone functions. I must let everyone know that if 3.0 is not all what it needs to be then I'm jumping ship over to the Pre.

I have to admit, just hearing this feels like Christmas Eve! 3.0! But how many of us have made our wish list, scrambled to the tree to rip open a box filled with...socks or a sweater?! Apple has been eerily consistent with underwhelming after a lot of hype. I'm afraid to get my hopes up but really can't help myself.

Personally I would like to see things easy to fix. Yeah mms but also video. Maybe even how the correct weather on the weather app instead of random degrees kinda how the calander shows the correct date. A way to turn off SMS notices to. Just simple things without having to jailbreak

The strength of the palm webOS is not its pretty interface or its multi-tasking cards (which is a threat Apple would be very foolish to take lightly), but in its seamless integration of all our web information. I think this will be the next big thing that will force all other smartphone os makers sit up for a while.

There IS much substance behind its pretty shell. The one who doesn't see the virtues of his competition falls. Let's hope Apple doesn't sit on its fat ass and turn a blind eye to this threat, then maybe we will all enjoy using more useful future versions of iphone.

I think you will see a general os update, this update will work better with itunes and especially work with iLife 09 products which the iPhone can NOT currently do. Apple likes compatability between products and the fact that the iPhone can not preview numbers 09 files is a issue which I am sure concerns them...

Whoopee what's the big deal ? Tethering don't need it got fast broadband anyway ! Mms well since owning iPhone kinda stopped doing it and haven't really missed it have started emailing photos and it's free! So not excited yet give us cut paste or a good gps possiby a bit of background but so far dissapoinyed by rumors

I have to confess, I'm pretty tired of the same old, same old "hands-on" demos of the Pre that keep popping up. To me, it's not a "hands-on" if it's a Palm exec who's doing it. I think we can all admit that the Pre has a cool calendar, but those cards are looking less and less like a great idea, methinks - they'll soon become a pain once you have a few open.

I'd be willing to wager that within a month after the release of the 3.0 software upgrade that anyone who owned the original Palm Pre will be purchasing an iPhone. Oh, wait a second!!! I don't think Apple had a fire lit under them in terms of schedule, they've shown off new OS both in Jan 2007 and March 2008. But will a fire have been lit on terms of features?

Glad to see that some competitors (Nokia n97, Palm Pre, Samsung Omnia HD, Sony ericsson Idou) has put a fire under apple to improve their smartphone. In order t compete with these guys they are gonna have to allow multitasking, true push notifications, mms, copy paste, forwarding sms bluetooth file transfer and listening to music over bluetooth, video recording, and the list goes on. I have an iphone and like it a lot. things it can do it does well, but does leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully the 3.0 sdk will make it the smartest phone out there. fingers crossed!!
