Does anybody know why Apple decided to go this route (notification providers talking to APNS and APNS having a permanent TCP connection to individual iPhones) rather than, perhaps more obvious and simpler all round, providers sending SMS messages (containing badge count, alert text, sound filename) to individual iPhones?

They weere very nice and even told me how to find my UDID, sent step by step directions and i was up in less than 5 minutes. just my 2 cents

So, unless I misunderstand this, each app's notification type will be determined by it's developer, and not by the user's settings? We couldn't choose from the three types for each app? If this is the case, it's not an improvement. I'll never buy an app with only text alerts.

I supposed you could do swap files in and out of RAM like on a desktop, but aside from lowering NAND life, it might not be too performant.

Will Text alerts be free?

This is so sad they couldn't have just added more RAM.

Is there no way to use a portion of the devices flash memory?

You can expect some non-obtrusive solution for the 4.0 firmware. As Google has some partnership with Apple (see Maps for instance), I believe they could mimic the same solution used by Android.
