Next Gen iPhone Leaks Begin: Chinese Forum "We Got Specs!" Edition!

MacRumors has been keeping tabs on Chinese forum Weiphone, and says -- in addition to the screen shot above -- the following specs have been leaked about the next generation iPhone, widely believed to be announced in just under a month at Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC):

  • Model number MB717LL
  • 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
  • 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
  • Digital Compass and FM
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
  • 32GB size
  • No major changes in battery, screen and external casing.

Do we believe it? Some parts seem in line with other rumors we've been hearing, but who knows? (Other than Steve Jobs and his closest minions, of course). No doubt, we'll be seeing more and more of these as WWDC approaches. So, for our purposes, we'll just ask if this resembles the next gen iPhone you want?

How Much iPhone 3G Data Are You Using Now?
  1. Rico says:

FM awesome more ways to drain the battery whoopi!!

  2. sil3ntrid3r11 says:

"600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz) 256MB RAM (up from 128MB) Digital Compass and FM 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus 32GB size"

Those are all the things I am looking forward to! I think something like the above photo can be easily mocked up.. but i'm hoping for stats along those lines

  3. Wolfmore says:

More CPU speed and more RAM is good enough to make me want to upgrade from my 3G. I'll pay the cancelation fees. I'm not rich but the iPhone has become my prefered way to stay conneceted so every little bit I can get I want and I think it's worth it.

  4. Greg says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE nice, sleek qwerty keyboard?

  5. Brian says:

How about the 29.3 GB on the screenshot? Confirmation that it's finally moving up in size as well?

  6. Brian says:

nvm...I need to learn to read.

  7. Spidesol says:

@greg.... the iPhone is a touchscreen device so its never gonna have a keyboard. The only reason i think this picture looks authentic is because iPhone is assembled in china so they must have begun production of the phone there since the phone is supposed to be released in about a month... i hope it has video and a flash thats all i really want for this summer!

  8. Microcosmos says:

I am looking forward to all of the above stats except FM radio, though mostly because I haven't thought of it in my phone before. Heck, I'll take that as icing on the cake I guess why not! I think this looks realistic, I was expecting something along exactly these lines to be honest! I wasn't expecting the HD iPhone just yet. Do you think we might still see OLED?

  9. Scott says:

Can someone please tell me why so many people want a QWERTY keyboard? I had a Treo, and I cant understand why someone would want that on their phone still. Back in the day that was really nice to have, but what use do they insist on having it for?

If a new piece of hardware is coming, I think it wouldnt matter exactly what it had, we'd all be excited. However, if these are part of the specs then BRING IT ON! Cant come soon enough for a 1st Gen iPhone owner such as myself. :)

  10. frog says:

Nice, and I beleive this kind of upgrade is most likely. I'd prefer some kind of massive battery improvement though - whether it be a better battery or some other improvement, like an OLED screen, which would have a similar effect. I'd like to see a different casing, the black plastic annoys me - gets really slippery.

  11. dloveprod says:

Those look nice, I hope they also improve battery life

  12. Tone says:

yea all that is wha I'm looking for the FM doesn't really excite me too much and Qwerty keyboard is wack touchscreen is prefect once u get use to it

  13. Nick says:

Honestly this is exactly what I think the new iphone will be like. When you think about it it makes sense - a modest upgrade that is more like a refresher of the iphone 3g. I'd suggest that theyd be more inclined to release a proper HD with OLED screen in another years time (maybe coupled with 4G LTE technology).

by the way, I would have thought the FM transmitter was for transmission to your cars radio (not receiving FM signals).

  14. Tone says:

    @ Nick that makes sense

  15. PhxBlue says:

I'll take it. I dont want a body redesign, just beefed up inner specs and maybe an HD screen.

  16. Chobbs says:

I want a different casing. I hate the black plastic. It's the only reason I didn't upgrade to the 2nd gen (3g) phone.

And please never ever ever come out with a dirty, bulky, and awkward physical keyboard! That would ruin the whole point of the touchscreen...duh!

  17. PHug says:

I know that Steve told you that the touch screen was better than a keyboard and I also know that what Steve tells you is gospel but.. What harm will come from offering us a choice between a normal iPhone and a iPhone w/ keyboard? Simply release both phones together and charge more for the keyboard version then sit back and collect all the new customers that want a keyboard. I suppose Mr. Jobs has to tell you that free-will is OK before you will see the light.

  18. Albert says:

now these are rumors that actually make sense. Eventually the iPhone will run into the same problem that all handset makers run into, how do you support legacy hardware? Apple has shown they at least have the guts to go cold turkey when they made the cut to OSX from Classic9

  19. Kada says:

The one update I want more than any of that is a better battery. We already know that the new 3.0 software will make it run background apps, etc. and if that if going on plus better ram and processor, then the battery life will stink more than it ever has. Throw a 20 cell battery at it! LOL, but seriously, something better on battery, people want to do more on the phone without fear of draining their phones. They could update software and put a better battery in the new one and I would be happy. Oh, and a glowing apple on the back would be cool too.....

  20. Jay says:

@Wolfmore I think you just made Steve Jobs cum in his pants.

  21. DevilsOwn says:

@Frog No, the "black plastic" is the perfect look. If it annoys you, get a case. I will say that Apple should offer different colors, although I would stay with black.

  22. DevilsOwn says:

    +1 to everything Nick said.

  23. KK says:

An apple logo that lights up just like the macbooks would be a nice addition.

  24. Jose says:

How funny I was just thinking about a glowing logo today too.

  25. antonioj. We already know that the new 3.0 software will make it run background apps, etc. says:

"We already know that the new 3.0 software will make it run background apps, etc"

    Say what? No it won´t

Regarding the processor. The current one, that is available on both Iphone and Ipod touch, is already running around 600mhz, altough on the iphone is underclocked to 400mhz. So really, what´s new there?

Now, a new improved battery, that will alow iphone´s processor to run at full speed, that is what is needed

  26. frog says:

If it has a glowing Apple logo, I'd buy it regardless lol

  27. Vernon Dozier says:

If it's going to have an updated processor they better upgrade the battery as well. I hate to say this but if that's all there is to the upgrades my credit card will be staying in my wallet. Lucky for me I don't believe these specs.

  28. samuel says:

This is an AppleInsider story, MacRumors just copied it

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/05/11/chineserumorclaims2009iphonewillbemodestupgrade.html

  29. lordzod01 says:

makes sense really. It's not phisable to release a major upgrade while people are tied into contracts. I would expect next year to see somehong special arrive.

The iPhone is an advance in technology, to step back and fit it out with a hard keyboard, doesn't make sense. The future is for the device to be a computer first and a phone second. There simply isn't enough room to add more technology to the frame, and add a hard keyboard while not bulk it up to much.

As for longer battery life, the new juice pack air has all that covered

  30. Kris says:

If those specs are true, then I probably won't be upgrading. Not sure it's worth paying the cancellation fee. Only time will tell if this latest rumour is true.

  31. Steve says:

There are people here who still don't understand that the iPhone's keyboard is already QWERTY? Look at the first six keys for godssake!!

  32. iPhoneMilk says:

    Stop talking about QWERTY keyboards.

Buttons break people. It's just what happens... iPhone is the light.

    @Steve lol! ::P

  33. OmariJames says:

FM eh ? I guess that's apart of the list of APIs. Hook your phone up to a stereo via the 30-pin connector and BOOM , FM radio.

I deffintely need a 32GB iPhone, Faster CPU and ram means after everything.

It seems that the more you have on your phone , the more it slows down.

My friend has a 8 and I have a 16, with 1.5GB remaining. I used our phones simontaneously and hers loads and moves A LOT faster.

    I hope it's still 199 and 299

  34. Adam says:

I STILL want a front-facing camera!!!! COME ON!!!!

And I want an OLED screen!!! Ugh!

If this is it, I'm not upgrading this year.

  35. mKizzo says:

I really can't see apple adding an FM receiver on this unless like OmariJames says, its already in the APIs of 3.0. Besides being pretty much resolved through plenty of apps that pick up internet radio stations, it will also mean less songs being purchased from iTunes. Not the business model I'm used to seeing at apple. But I have been wrong in the past.

Spec wise, it doesn't take a scientist to come up with this. And the author went through the hassle of taking a screen shot but not a pic of the actual device? Seems fishy to me.

  36. Harold says:

Yes thank god, this is what i've been waiting for since iPhone 1.0.

  37. Sean peters says:

as usual we have a bunch of people telling the keyboard crowd what they should and shouldn't want, which is a waste of breath. As for me, I have no desire for a built-in keyboard, but I'd sure like to be able to buy an external keyboard. It would make typing so much faster and more accurate.

  38. Tone says:

@mkizzo u so right! like why this screenshot take a friggin pic of the phone!

  39. victor says:

More RAM and a faster processer sound great but without an upgraded battery I won't even make it to noon without a recharge.

  40. victor says:

Btw, has anyone tried the Case-Mate Fuel or any other suplimentary battery?

  41. HeyMatthew says:

I'm just hoping for better battery life and if including all of these specs is part of the 'master plan' then so be it. I'd also like to see them go back to the aluminum case. The black (or white) plastic of the iPhone 3G scratches and is very slippery. Not sure why they went plastic on it when they were going metal and glass on EVERY OTHER Apple product.

Anyway. I miss having the iPhone so when this new one comes out, I'll be just about at my upgrade point so looks like I'll be grabbing one (assuming I can find one in stock in town).
