Real or Fake? Another Next-Gen iPhone “Leak” Hits the Web!

iPhone iSpazio Leak 01

Italian site iSpazio has posted up a couple images they received from tipster who claimed they’re shots from Apple’s development web server showing off pages that feature the next-generation iPhone (presumably what will go up post-WWDC keynote).

Of note, they highlight the Voice Memos app from iPhone 3.0 and — wait for it — a front facing camera, presumably for the oft-rumored Mobile iChat. As always, there’s no way to tell if these are real or fake.

The second image (after the jump), which features tethering, however, perplexingly shows off the iPhone 2.x, NOT 3.0 home screen layout. Roh-roh Raggy. That one has us immediately calling shenanigans…

All in favor?

Mossberg: Palm Pre Review or iPhone News Leak?
  1. Chip says:

Fake, notice here http://store.apple.com/us that this page looks exactly the same except for that add. Seems fishy.

  2. Jeffdc5 says:

rene you didn’t show the other pics but thanks for linking back to the page

  3. Christopher says:

Wait. That first image matches the one from weeks ago with the really high ear piece!..?

  4. Craig says:

hmm did jeffdc5 email renee the tip?

  5. Christopher says:

Also, if this is true, does this mean the new iPhone will be available the day of WWDC?!

  6. M says:

As if Apple would use the term “internet tethering” in their ads. Puleeze.

  7. cooldog74 says:

i wondered when we would see leaks. I was expecting about 2 weeks before today and not so close to wwdc. I cant wait. that camer already is yelling at me to upgrade when it comes out.

  8. Craig says:

someone else posted the tip here …hmmm

  9. Big Willie says:

The picture that had the Titanium looking iPhone looked much better. Now I wish that one was real! :^(

  10. Russ says:

the iphone in that picture is very plane.. i hope thats not what the real one will look like

  11. OmariJames says:

    Eh. Idk.

The apple store site looks weird because isn’t the iPhone located in the line up next to the iPod touch and apple tv ?

If a front facing cammy is real , then I could see it for maybe some kind of video blogging feature. Remener the ” upload to MobileMe ” feature in 3.0 ?

There is also new features for YouTube so maybe we can upload our own videos to YouTube directly from our phone in 3.0. It won’t be something new since I know the Helio Ocean can do that. It would still be cool none the less.

  12. Scam Detector says:

    Looks fake to me.

  13. Chobbs says:

    I Want To Believe!

I didn’t think the pic of the new phone looked “Plain” to me it looked “simple” and simple IS beautiful.

Hope the IChat thing pans out.

  14. ThatOneDude says:

Did anybody notice how there is no longer a metal bar around the edge? thats unusual. And I thought it had a percentage of the battery life next to the battery pic. in the top right.

  15. Chris says:

That second image is 3.0 for sure, just look at the messages app. this could be legit…

  16. Chobbs says:

there have been several rumors running around that the metal bezel is history

  17. robbiebisme says:

i think this is legit there was some supposedly leaked pic that showed the new iphone not having the silver rim and this one does not. if its a fake the person who did it at least had a copy of the 3.0 beta and they updated the carrier file to allow tethering because that what mine looks like. im happy with that if thats the final product ill be in line getting one

  18. amarshukla123 says:

It doesn’t matter to me even if its real . whats so great about iphone … ehh ?

  19. Jeremy says:

The font used in the headline for “Internet Tethering” is clearly not the normal Apple corporate font (check the e’s). Its a fake.

  20. Christopher says:

I think this is real. Remember the rumors and the photos of the black bezel casing? And the photos of the phone with a higher ear piece. I’m tripping out.

  21. iamse7en says:

If Apple/AT&T prohibited Sling Media from using SlingPlayer over 3G (which is a tiny demographic), then I can’t imagine why they would endorse video iChat over 3G…

I’m sorry, but it just ain’t gonna happen.

I kind of liked that mockup we saw last year around this same time… it got my hopes up for NOTHING.

  22. Christopher says:

@iamse7en what about strictly over wi-fi?

  23. icebike says:

    @Jeremy:

And below “Internet Tethering” it says “Check the availability of your carrier.” If written by a native english speaker that would read “Check availability from/with your carrier” or “Check with your carrier for availability”.

This is a crude hack written by a native romance language (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian) speaker. Its probably an Italian hack, since it appears on an Italian site.

More subtle is that Green Dot on the first picture (just below the speaker). That picture looks like others I’ve seen, but (higher position of the speaker slit). Is the same faker trying to fake a notifications light?

  24. Chobbs says:

the green dot is why I think it is real! it is supposed to be the indicator light letting you know the cam is on. notice how it is not centered? that is because the camera is centered.

  25. Kagan says:

My reason for thinking (but not hoping) this is a fake is because why would the green light be on in the first picture? The screen doesn’t show something that would require the knowledge of a camera being on. I.E. the green light on the macbook/macbook pro/iMac/Apple Display only kicks on when you are doing something like using Photo Booth or iChat with video chat. The screen only reflects audio being recorded so no video would be functioning. If this were really apple’s image, they would show a face in an ichat window or something similar with the green light. Very good on that faker’s end though for instilling the idea of a front facing camera only using the image of a little green light. (don’t worry, in the same token like all of you I hope I am wrong and this is real)

  26. Kagan says:

Hate to post twice, but also Apple wouldn’t write “Internet Tethering on your New iPhone OS 3.0″ They would probably write something like

iPhone 3.0 – Now with Internet Tethering

    or something to that effect.

  27. Mafs says:

Totally fake! A look at image two and everything is clear: this is so homemade and really bad done – no clue on Apple thinking! Apple would never ever use the words “internet tethering” in any ad. It just doesnt make any sense to the normal mac-user. The fake images are made by a typical pc-person who thinks that “internet tethering” is the coolest thing. What a f***ing joke! Get a life!

  28. donkeynuts says:

It’s probably real.. If you check the current apple.com site, notice how there’s a “NEW” logo above the Macbooks.. By the time of this update, the macbooks will not be “NEW” anymore, thus taking that logo away (as in this picture..) I’m voting for real (on the 2nd).. The first.. hmmm weird way to showcase the camera (in a voice recording app) but who knows…???

  29. Anthony Martinez says:

    Bogus

  30. James Gill says:

I think the key thing here is why would Apple be promoting TETHERING – a feature of the 3.0 firmware (not a feature specific to the new iPhone hardware) in the Apple Store. Surely this promotion, if at all real, would be found on the iPhone pages of apple.com and NOT in the Store.

Also, the first image – I do not believe for one minute that Apple would post marketing materials of the new iPhone – with over 40,000 apps available in the store – with the fairly average Apple built Voice Recording app. It seems the faker of these images wanted to make it 110% clear that they were of an iPhone running 3.0 firmware that he HAD to show a screenshot that was unquestionably from 3.0.

All in all, the faker has used the rumours we’ve all heard, and attempted to build a fairly convincing couple of images. But there’s no way in hell these are real Apple marketing materials. No way.

  31. Liam Darling says:

How do u get into apples server anyways

  32. JT says:

Absolutely no way these are real! Especially that second one! I’d think with a new product like that on the store, Apple would do more than change one single image halfway down the page.

It’s exactly the same as http://store.apple.com/us but by the looks of thing the faker couldn’t think of anything imaginative to do for the iPhone image in the topleft – it’s not there!

Plus the screenshot in the second image doesn’t actually seem to show a data carrier, though that may just be camera blur… But it looks suspiciously like that single leaked screenshot we got ages ago from the guy who was ‘hacking around’ and unlocked the interface – even the date on the calendar’s the same! [Wednesday 18] Apple would set the date to something significant like the release date.

But I also agree with James above, Apple would never make choices like that as their primary marketing techniques – voice memo and tethering? No way is that Apple thinking…

  33. Spacedoggy says:

Everyone needs to come down. All will be revealed next week anyway!

  34. Adam says:

I hope to god there really is a front facing camera. YouTube QuickCapture anyone?

  35. MacMike says:

I think both are bogus. But I think the previously released image of the new bezel with the higher speaker is real and if that is real then I think iChat on the iPhone 3rd gen is posible. Why else would they move the speaker up unless they needed the room for something else… like a front-facing camera!

  36. Bill says:

Definitely, absolutely fake. You can tell from the grammar/writing style. C’mon, pay attention people! Apple puts out extremely polished advertising. They would not say “Internet Tethering on your new iPhone OS 3.0″, or “Check the availability of your carrier” or describe a new product as “…curious, advanced.”

  37. Tramain says:

Fake would be easy for them to add this fake onto apple website.

  38. himynameissam says:

“The second image (after the jump), which features tethering, however, perplexingly shows off the iPhone 2.x, NOT 3.0 home screen layout”.

It is the 3.0 layout, it has the blank bubble that contains ‘SMS’ on the 2.0 OS.

  39. Lazlow says:

Father’s day will be over by the time that ad is up… so why is there a Father’s Day ad right next to the “new iPhone” ad?

  40. Daje says:

I hope the new iPhone does not look like that. I think that is so ugly

  41. Daje says:

Now if they have a all white one like that I’m in.!!! But. Black isn’t my style.

  42. specialk4004 says:

The apple store image could be real. Notice by the ipod shuffle is where the iphone should be. you see “something” iphone, maybe like “2009″ iphone. and above is the lil blue square that says “new”. however the reason it could be fake is because the ipod touch is missing a prics.

  43. Frankless says:

the little green dot… just like a macbook/macbook pro when you are using the camera does this mean a front facing camera?!?!!!!!

  44. thoughtful says:

Macrumors has newer pics from the same site. I am not saying they are real because at least some elements are fake (most obviously os 2.x). But i’d place a bet on some elements being true. 1. Flat backside – many people disliked the rounded design. 2. Headphone jack on lower left and speakers on the upper front of the device – to put the iPhone in your pocket you always had to turn it around. Bad design choice in the first place. 3. On/Off on the top left instead of the right – makes perfect sense (hint: hold the device in your right hand. Where is your index finger. Good boy). So while I don’t see the device looking exactly like this. Some ideas in this concept seem likely to me.

  45. Theo says:

    @thoughtful

I always liked the headphones on the top and the lock button on the top left. It distinguishes it from the itouch. I always like when people go why os that like that? Oh it’s an iPhone. Cool

  46. thoughtful says:

i don’t need my iphone to look different. I wouldn’t mind if people mistake it for an ipod touch. I mean I know the differences inside and I take benefit from them. Different looks are not important. Actually if the devices look fairly similar, it will be better for peripheral producers, giving us users more choices after all.

  47. J I T trucker says:

If it smells like a fake, looks like a fake then its got to be a fake
