I have had 3 random "Shut downs" "Black outs" or "Power downs/ failures" what ever you call it. Nothing will fix it, I do not know what is causing it. It took 14 hours for it to reboot the latest time. Help me please. I have a IPhone 4.

Sounds very much like the problem I had. (See comment 1 above.) It seemed to improve after a software upgrade, with almost no problems during the last couple of months. I have now upgraded to a 4S so hopefully have seen the last of the problem, (fingers crossed a whole new set of probs don't bite my arse!)

I'll be talking on my Iphone (3G) and a little loading sign will appear in the middle, (My phone just completely freezes). It stays like that for AWHILE! Then it goes to a black screen with an Apple sign! It is so frustrating!! After a very long time, it will finally come back on it's own. (Nothing lost) But I'm wondering if this is only the beginning of it fixing to shut completely shut done for good!? It has done this twice so far. (I do not want my phone to break. I have to much music, pictures, and messages I have saved!)

See my first comment "me too. I have 3GS. during the last week it has shut off a few times & takes alot longer to turn back on. BUT when it turns off the screen isn't totally off. I can faintly see the screen I was using. The battery power has been at various levels. 28% was the lowest. But as high as 78%. I was using my GPS Navicon which I downloaded & it shut down. I turned it back on & Navicon acted like I hadn't used it today. normally it keeps the address but today it didn't. I then tried going into Google maps & it closed again. BUT it's not just when it's accessing the net...I have had it shut down when I was just playing a wordgame. Is it maybe a sleeper virus designed to activate nearly 2 years down the track so we will just buy a new one?? "

my iphone 3gs recently had a new battery put in like 3-4 months ago it was working smoothly the first month. then the dreadful second month came along and my battery pretended to be low on battery and it would just play dead.ex: 5%=40%. then it started working fine until today it i believe suffered a "coma" an hour ago. and it has been plugged in since but has not gotten out of that "coma". it should have turned on by now right?

i have the same problem too!! either when i use the camera, apps or internet...the phone heats up and then shuts off and i can't turn it on as it shows that the battery is dead.after some time...it turns back on again...however...it is advisable to carry a poratble charger along as it speeds upde timetaken for the fone 2 on again...orprevent the fone frm shutttin off while usin the camera,app or internet....but still it does not stop de fonr frm heatin up+_+!

My iphone was randomly shutting off, it was a 3GS, it would work after a full charge for about an hour, and then the games began, if it works for a while after a full charge, and then starts doing it, you most likely have a battery issue. Replace your battery through iFixit.com for 19 Dollars. Solved all my frustrations, Enjoy your day. Also noticed mine would freeze, then the screen would slowly fade out, also the sign of a battery issue, not an overheating or programming issue.

Hello all. My iPhone 3G (iOs 4.2.1) regularly hangs, freezes or intolerably slows down (up to 1mn waiting after typing a character in a SMS...). Also regularly looses the GPS icon (in Maps or Wikango for example). Spotlight is desactivated, no push mode, reboot has no effect, restored from backup, reinstalled all... Just wanna trash it now.

If ur gonna use a car charger u have to make sure the voltage and amperage specs are the same as the home charger. The voltage you want is 5 volts and the amperage should be 1000ma or 1 amp. If the amperage is lower than 1 amp u will ruin ur battery. However if u have a charger that pushes more than an amp you'll be fine because the phone only draws 1 amp. Hope this makes sense.

My iphone 3Gs freezes/hangs during calls. I will be talking away, then realise there is no response. When I look at the screen there is the apple symbol in the middle of it. After a period of time it comes back on it self. I have tried turning off and re-starting but do it too quickly and no change happens. In my mind it seems like the phone heats up and turns itself off until it cools down. Has anyone else had this freezing/hanging problem? If so, what fixed it? cheers, David

well i didn't had anythose problems before with my 3gs but recently it started to happen. First when my battery was about to die or when it becomes less than 20% it just freezes and shuts down competely unless i charge it. And i thought it was caused due to the jail brake. So i retored my iphone completely and thought it would help. After that when i try to use two apps at the same time like listening to the music and playing poker online then it just shuts down itself. Its too frustrating you know. Can someone help me out how to fix it.

Ok...I didn't see this blog before updating to iOS 4.2

I have a 3G that has been working fine for 2 years and when I finally get (after several attempts) 4.2 updated on my phone it starts shutting off the moment I take it off the charger regardless if it is showing fully charged.

For the past 24 hours I've been at wits end but thankfully I found this blog and saw where it said to shut off auto lock and auto brightness and so far my phone has stayed on (while off the charger) for about 30 mins which is about 29 mins longer than it has all day.

At&t is a huge disappointment. 3G service is sub-par. iPhone randomly shuts off especially when using google or safari. Dropped calls constantly. Nobody has answers. Everybody has the same problem. AT&T and apple customer service is very apathetic to issues

i too will add my name to the list of iphone3g owners whos devise randomly shut off. sometimes, rarely, will it return to use after a hard reset,( holding power and menu button simultaneously.) it has become more frequent. new software installed twice. no help today it shut off during a conversation. twice in 20 min. has anyone found a solution? i am days away from upgrading with a contract. should i just get the 4 and move on?

My Iphone is having similar problems. I have to reboot using both the top and bottom buttons (on/off and menu buttons?) but after a minute or so it locks up and i have to try again. Tried calling the local Apple store ((805) 497-7660 just to find out the best times to come in s there is only so much time i like to spend hanging out there but seems like they're having problems too! their menu just keeps re-playing no matter what option i chose. My husband keeps telling me that his Blackberry never has these issues.

So Carla, how did you ever get it resolved, or did you? My iPhone crashes when attempting to do anything with location when I'm traveling. I can do location based things like Google Places, when plugged into a charger, but it will crash the phone if not. Pretty much everything else works just fine. I also can't switch between Edge and 3G out and about, if not plugged in. Anyone have a fix here? Is there a file I need to wipe and reload the OS?

I have tried restore back from Ipsw 4.3.1 to Ipsw 3.1.3 (the very basic when I purchased). So far used out the 60% of the battery life, still running good never shut down, just keep my finger crossed. Will keep updates here. Do check back..cheers.

I do have similar experience, I charged my Iphone as and when during driving, my phone 3gs and ISO 3.1.3 upgraded to 4.3.1 now, used to be unlocked. I tried to restore back to normal, but it doesn't seem to be software problems, recently it shut down quite frequently as the battery % shown 90+, 70+, 50+ and so..any advise??

Hi, my iphone 3g always turns off when the battery % goes below about 70% and then when you try to turn it on it just turns back off straight away then says battery dead, if i leave it for like 30mins and turn it on it works, or if i plug it straight into a charger it works too. The battery also doesn't last long when on the internet or playing games. What I really would like to know is how to turn Voice Control off. More than once my BT headset hav e made calls because I apparently pressed the call button accidentally.It"s certainly been my number one new obsession of the latter half of 2010. It"s not exactly perfect in every way, but this phone is nonetheless totally friggin" awesome.I use my iphone 4 a lot to take photos and post on my blog. This app would be great to fix and adjust photos on the go. The "spot heal" feature looks to be my go-to need.

I have a 3GS, and after the latest update to iOS 4.3 it started shutting down randomly, regardless of what the battery charge is (be it 20% or 90%), I'd be playing a game, watching a youtube video, etc... Goes dark, have to plug it in, takes forever to boot up, but comes back with all settings (nothing lost basically). Extremely frusturating when it happens when you don't have a charger handy (nothing else will turn it back on). After seeing so many comments about the same thing, I think apple had embedded a code into the latest iOS, I know I sound like a conspiracy nut, but Apple being Apple, I think they would do anything to make you buy their new products... Has anyone else had that thought cross their mind?

I have an ipod touch that I have been using for about 3 years now. It has been running just fine without any issues. I recently upgraded to the latest os 3.1 and that's when the troubles started. I will just freeze up and not let me restart it. i have restored from backup several times to no effect. Restored as new which also has had no effect. Every time I restore. it seems to work fine for a little bit then randomly will just freeze. Sometimes it lets me turn it off, but other times it will let me turn it off but immediately turns itself back on and stays stuck on the apple screen at the start. The only way to get it even remotely semi useable again is to restore it. It's pretty much a useless little brick right now. I'm glad to see , though, that I'm not the only one. I thought perhaps it was somehow broken, but nope, I'd be willing to bet they have a good ole fashioned bug in there somewhere in their OS.

hey my iphone 3g is jail broken and it just crashed , told me to plug into i tunes . it crashed itunes ! it brings up the apple sign then it puts a circle loading icon then shuts off . i have tryed pressing the top button and the circle button to reset it but it still doesnt work . what do i do?

So I had this same problem... Updated my iPhone software, phone froze and shut down everytime it was in standby for more than ten seconds... BUT!!!! I restored it and the same problem was there... I went to apple store and they had no idea how to fix it... I restored it Again and had an error message pop up saying it couldn't restore... I unplugged it and BAM!!!!! Back to normal I know it's prob not a very good method for a fix but it worked and two days later it still works fine with no shut downs... If you restore and get an error message just unplug it and it worked for me hope this helps someone out there -mike

Had my apple 3g iphone for 5 months and it froze up, shut down, and never came back on. Lost all appointments & everything except my contacts. Apple had sent me a postage paid box, sent it to apple, waited almost a month and they replaced it with a new one. They insist you back up your phone on itunes before sending it in for repair.....My iphone would not turn back on and therefore LOST everything. 3 months now with new one and it still freezes up and now won't download updates. Consrantly talking to Apple and all they keep saying is to BUY the extended warranty before the 1 year warranty expires. Mind you, all technical questions have a fee if you want answers. Luckily they waived a one time 29.95 fee, but hereafter, i need to purchase exrended warranty or my tech questions will go unanswered. So dissapointed but love the phone. Apple needs better customer service!!! Thanks 4 listening....

This is very frustrating. I've had my iPhone 3G for two years now, and for the past four months the phone has been randomly shutting off. It has to sit on the charger constantly. The phone will complete a full charge and battery life will last a whole ten minutes before the phone shuts its self off. When turning it on the screen displays dead battery. I can't make any phone calls without the phone charging. It will last between 30 seconds and one minute just on its own battery. I've restored countless times. Four months ago before this started happening I was texting excessively for a month, as well as long phone calls. Could this have killed the battery?

Различная магия не интересует, сразу говорю, а то развелось рекомендателей, блин. Резюмирую: помогите решением, может это просто нервы)) должен быть простой выход из ситуации, мне кажется. п.с. С психологом уже консультировался, собственно он к трихологу и отправил.

Having the same issue on ipod touch 3rd generation. Only happened in the last couple of days, but now its unuseable. Power off slider keeps popping up, never reboots, and sometimes flashes home page a lot when it does re-boot, then shuts down again. I've had it for 3 years with no issue.

Getting really frustrated...same as comment 33 & 34... if I'm on a call for more than 10 mins the phone cuts off and apple logo shows...it will resume after a couple of minutes but no warning that call has been lost so I'm rambling away to myself. I dissabled insomnia, but left off auto brightness and autolock... froze within 2 mins ...... looks like insomnia is the way to go! Shame the fix involves jailbraking ect

I might have fixed it! ---- well at least stopped it for an entire night. I downgraded to 3.1.3, jailbroke with jailbreakme, unlocked with ultrasn0w, installed insomnia ( an app for cyndia that stops it going into sleep mode for wifi reasons ) Thats 12 hours and counting

Okay so my iPod touch was jailbroken and to undo the jailbreak I updated it to 4.0.2. The reason why I undid the jailbreak is because my iPod kept freezing up and I had to restart it a lot because of this. I'm a little afraid because once I updated my iPod it still freezed up and just a few minutes ago for the first time ever it turned itself off! Someone please tell me what's going on.

I was full of praise for my Iphone4 32gb - no signal problems in fact better reception than my Samsung, Now, however after 2 updates I am having PROBLEMS !! since the last update I am getting screen flashing, screen freeze, and having to reset at least 3 times a day ... Guys i recently tried to upgrade my iphone 3gs to OS 4. which was locked from AT&T. But it failed. Now i have done it but now i have 2 problems. 1. Its asking for activation SIM 2. It turns off once i take out the charging cable.

Please provide me with the solution.

These phones are now such garbage what ever u do don't update to ios4 just keep it the way it is and I need them to make a new update I need this phone for my Job lately it has been working and if u want to turn back on put it next to an air conditioning or fan and it will work but the new update blows

I bought my 3gs back in May and it has completely locked up 3 times......the screen shows the usb cord going to Itunes......I have to completely restore to original settings then restore....Sometimes I dont have time to install some of my purchased apps so I lose them when I restore.......I am completely frustrated and dont know what to do........Please help....

OK... so i have a 3Gs 32 gb it was working fine till the screen started to freeze randomly until it decided to work, shuts down by itself im running on 3.1.2 its the one ive always had it just randomly started shutting down and the screen freezing by dif periods of time i have no clue whats going on i thought i had too much stuff in it and then i checked my storage available and i had 11 gb!! as im writing this he just went awake to a text message and went back to ''unlock screen'' WHATS GOING ON HELP!!!!

Same as Adam. Shuts down and shows Apple logo when making longer phone calls. I can´t use it when I am on call and it breaks important calls from the hospital at night! Is this phone only for pleasure and not for business?? I am very disappointed.

3gs is shutting down only when i am on a long call, say over 5 minutes. Frustrating as hell as you get no signal that this has happened. strange thing is you the apple logo, but tne reverts back to the screen lock...in goes the code and off igo again. My own fault, it´s a company phone and the IT geeks warned us not to update. Did i listen, no. Other improvements work great.

Hi..im looking stuff up to try to see if i can fix my iphone but i think its to do with the new update..im not gonna trash talk apple or whoever cuz it only happened after the update of 4.0..now inno why i cant get a background to my phone or double tap on camera to work..when i open apps..they are slow and freeze and shut down..if anyone knows anything help..if not..im glad to see another update for the iphone..hopefully i get the other great updates..like the background for the phone and stuff cool thanks

I have a 3GS that I have been using with the original software version 3.0.1 that was installed on the phone when I purchased it back in June 2009. I have never once updated it to a later version, because everything was working perfect. I thought that I might like to have the new multitasking features found in OS 4.0, so I updated to 4.0.1, and now the phone… has a major battery problem, the camera freezes, and will intermittently shut off.

DO NOT UPDATE TO OS 4.0 or 4.0.1…. it really sucks nothing but problems…. I really hate this, and I am not even able to restore back to OS 3.0.1.. I don't know what to do now.

Also you can backup your iphone to your itunes...do the restore and reload everything onto it without losing contacts ,messages etc.

My 3gs just totally shutdown and would not respond to the usually reboot. So i used a pin to pop out the sim card at the top for a second...popped it back in and it rebooted...hope this keeps working or helps. Thanks

As of today, I haven't been able to access my iTunes from my phone. I got the new software upgrade and love it, but whenever I go to iTunes, it exits that app after about 10 seconds. I've tried rebooting it a few times, but haven't done the restore yet. I was hoping it would just start working again. Anyone had this issue?

My iPhone 3GS keeps shutting down, too. The problem started about 2 weeks ago when I was on vacation. My screen goes black and has grey vertical stripes in the middle. I took it to the apple store when I got home and they told me to restore it to the factory settings. I did that, lost all my contact info and music! It worked for a few days and then started shutting down again randomly.....this is incredibly frustrating! Oh, and my phone was working just fine until we did the IOS 4 upgrade.

My iphone 3g has just frozen on the "slide to power off" page and I cant do anything with it, there is no response to anything I try. Its very frustrating I used to think Apple was the best but I'm not so sure now. But I cant text anyone to tell them or ask for help.

I am having the same issue as many others -- my iPhone 3G restarts at random intervals, at least 1/3rd of my apps refuse to even start, and I am spending more time staring at the little silver apple than not.

This is just ridiculous. It's brand new (I got it about a month before iOS 4 was released), and it was just fine before iOS 4. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Just got my 3GS because someone told me how great it was and i could update to IOS4 - now about 24 hours after the upgrade, my camera is freezing and not taking any pictures....nothing else is crashing or freezing just the camera, strange, but now i am thinking it was the upgrade, any suggestions?????

Don't upgrade to ios4! My 3GS was fine until I did. Now it locks up about 5 times a day. Not worth the upgrade!

My iPhone 3GS crashed immediately after installing ios4 and the display showed the "connect to iTunes" icons. I couldn't get it out of recovery mode and neither could the apple technician I paid $100 for phone support. Thought I'd lost footage of my baby crawling so v upset. Was told to go to apple store but had to wait 6 days for an appointment. They did some kind of hard reset and said this issue only occurred with pc users! Came home to restore from backup and would not work. Would not charge through USB and restore would close down after 2 mins. Apple told me I must be using the wrong cable. Got a friend to come over with her cable which still didn't work but my cable would work on her iPhone, hence the problem wasn't the cable! Gave up and left the phone to charge on the mains adapter overnight (which apple said wouldn't work) and it was fully charged in the morning!! Connected to pc and et voilà, restore from backup worked!!!! All good for a couple if days and now it randomly starts going through periods of crashing every 3 mins. Especially helpful when I'm driving using the Tom Tom app and I have to keep going back into the app manually! Would love to find a solution but had enough of speaking to apple "support" people this week!

I have a iPhone 4 and it is doing the same thing (shuts off by itself). I went back to the AT&T store last week to have it replaced and was told "we don't know when we can get you a replacement". When I asked them if my wife wants to upgrade to the "4" they said they could have one for her in a week or week and a half. Nothing like treating their current customers like "second class citizens". I'm calling him back today to put him on the spot about a replacement. My phone shut down by itself 4 times today already.

WHY ISN'T THIS PROBLEM GETTING ANY ATTENTION!!!!

My 3G is also shutting down, apparently rather than doing the auto-lock. The only way to bring it back to life is to do a hard reset (sleep + home for 10 seconds). If I set auto-lock to "never", it doesn't shut down but then the battery lasts for about 2 hours. ALL of this trouble started when I did the latest update. Grrrrr... Have done restore. No improvement.

My iphone 3g was locking up, black screen syndrome, shutting down, inability to end calls, see who was calling etc etc etc. This was a couple of months ago and BEFORE the new software update. I thought maybe I needed to update the software so I did - in the process lost half my data!!!! Also became non responsive when texting. Apple store told me to do complete restore as a new phone!!!! - Lost EVERYTHING off my phone, worked again for about two days and now back to locking up etc etc etc!!!! Its driving me to distraction. HELP!!!! anyone??

Same thing with me after my update. Reboot frequently when in use. Last night I experence for the first time, it rebooting everything 10 minutes or so while it was charging. It stoped after I finished charging. So, we are assuming it is due to the new upgrade? Any news when apple will have a new version to fix this problem?
