Pop-quiz: You're O2 and you just lost iPhone exclusivity in the UK, and now have to compete with both Orange and Vodafone for users' iPounds. What do you do? Why, tell them you still have the iPhone... and are getting the Palm Pre?!

We’re proud that we’ve been able to offer an exclusive iPhone deal to our 20 million customers for the last two years. We always knew that iPhone exclusivity was for a limited period of time, but our relationship with Apple continues and will be an ongoing success. We have over 1 million iPhone customers and they remain very important to us.

We aim to offer our customers the best devices on the market, including becoming the home of Smartphones and we are really pleased to now add another device in the Palm Pre. We also offer award-winning customer service and benefits, which is why more people choose O2 than any other network in the UK.

What say you UK readers, if you're thinking of taking your iPhone to another network, will offering you the Palm Pre change your mind?

  1. Daniel says:

    eeerm... no.

The quicker I can get off O2 the better.

Only 3 have worse reception quality and coverage.

  2. Mr Slinky Spring says:

Yep agreed, I live in London Zone 3 and get 1 bar reception or nothing with O2. Used to get full with Voda. Incidentally I heard a few months ago that O2 and Vodafone are to share networks to bolster signal strength for both companies.. Has anyone heard anything lately about this?

  3. Bee says:

I will stay with O2 and the iPhone. Although the Palm Pre sounds appealing, good to see it coming to O2.

  4. Rob says:

I personally will be moving to orange next iphone release. I don't hate o2 as a company but why I pay for a 3g device and sit with gprs the majority of the day its just ridiculous.

  5. Tim says:

    I'm staying with o2.

I think they are a good network in my area and have had no problems at all.

  6. boseyjones says:

So does this mean a GSM Pre?

  7. Greyscale says:

Must be GSM. Unless O2 are gonna rollout a CDMA network by Christmas.

  8. chrstphr.ross says:

    Sinners.

  9. Joe McG says:

Those crazy Brits, driving on the wrong side of the road and whatnot...

  10. ferritt says:

So does this mean that once my current 3g contract runs out in Feb I can take my o2 locked iphone to orange/vodafone? Or will I have to jailbreak & redsnow to move network?

    cheers

  11. Miami mike says:

    Smells like  to me!!!

  12. Quarks says:

Choice can only be a good thing, local network availability will be the key.

  13. Petruchio says:

I will stick with O2. I've been impressed with their customer service and signal (although I suppose it's all about where you live). I'm happy that other networks will offer the iPhone as hopefully it will start a good ol' fashioned price war! My 18 month contract on my iPhone 3G is up in January (along with everyone elses I would think!) so there may be some great deals for the 3GS going. Or do I have the patience to hang on for iPhone v4 in the summer???? Probably not!

  14. Tezza says:

I have been with Orange for about 15 years. Outstanding network coverage and lame technical support. I just renewed my contract with orange but wanted the iPhone so bad I paid a few hundred quid to get rid of my contract with orange and joined 02. What a big mistake that was! Crap network coverage is an understatement. Even the wifes 5 year old nokia on 3 gives better signal than my iPhone 3gs. Since the launch of the 3gs I've never experienced so many occasions of no signal. I will not under any circumstances renew with 02 and may even pay to get out of my contract.

  15. chrstphr.ross says:

I'm sure there would be an OS update released for the area to allow the use from multiple carriers. Or something easier than having a ton of customers coming over to the dark=side and jailbreaking their phones.

  16. Commenter says:

I will be staying with O2 (and the iPhone)... they have been really good. Though hopefully the competition will mean lower prices.

  17. icebike says:

Palm released the GSM pre quad band earlier this month. Pre central had the details: http://www.precentral.net/good-news-bad-news-gsm-palm-pre-bands-and-unlocking

Interesting you can buy a pre unlocked and sim-free (bring your own sim) for about 480 euros from O2 in Germany.

  19. Dwaine says:

I'll be staying with O2, their customer service is bril and I've not had much signal trouble. I'm just mainly in London zone 1-3 though. I love the free ulimited Internet both celular and WiFi via The Cloud & BT Openzone wireless networks that comes with the contract. Those are the two main wireless network which cover almost all train stations and public places in london. I get The Cloud wireless reception just about every where in the city square mile. Don't think the other networks will strike such a deal. Hopefully this will start a price war which could see me paying less for my next iPhone.

  20. Appleking says:

hopefully at&t will be saying the same thing next year lol becuz at&t sux.

THEY COULD OF HAVE IT GOOD WITH APPLE FOR A VERY LONG TIME BUT O2 GOT GREEDY

  22. o2victim says:

    Epic O2 incompetence!

After numerous epic fails and broken promises by O2 in generating a printed accurate balance on a now unused account so I can have it closed, O2 finally put a figure of £300 due on my account in an email (so I have evidence), even specifying this as a “one off payment”. I paid the debt within 24 hours. O2 then CLOSED the account as agreed. Case over.........not.

Imagine my jaw dropping when a letter arrives from a debt collector, not O2, saying I owe O2 OVER £1600! O2 obviously think two off payments are the norm.

I have now gone to the telecommunications industry ombudsman but I'm concerned that the ombudsman website says they don't accept every case. I fear now that the apparently incompetent O2 have hired a competent company to do their work.

Anyone got feedback other than “I better cancel my contract with O2 quick smart” ?
