Quick App: ZumoDrive Cloud Storage for iPhone

Zumo HeaderFor those of us looking for an iDisk alternative, Zester has come out with the ZumoDrive. The ZumoDrive is a free service (up to 2GB, you can purchase more) that allows you to store and sync files to the cloud just like Apple's iDisk. The app has three main sections: Files, Music and Photos.

This is how it works: You install the Zumo client on your PC or Mac. Once installed it can automatically look for your music and photo libraries. You can also add your own files and folders to sync too.

Once your data has synced to the cloud, it is accessible on your iPhone over EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi. One nice feature I particularly like is when playing music, it displays the album art of your song; this is really a nice touch. Your data is also accessible via a web browser too when the iPhone isn't enough. To learn more about ZumoDrive, click here. [Free- iTunes link]

AT&T, iPhone, and New York City: Fraud? Really?
  1. shollomon says:

Are there reasons to prefer ZumoDrive to Dropbox? I don't think Dropbox streams media.

  2. djlaube says:

That's why I like Zumodrive and two key features that's different than DropBox or any of the other cloud based storage providers: the streaming features as well as the ability to choose how much of the stuff in the cloud will be kept locally (cached) on your PC or Mac (on iPhone, everything is streamed) and how much is streamed. This enables you to use your Zumodrive disk and keep more free space locally, while still "appearing" in your Zumodrive. This is how I use it.. You can also choose to keep everything local too if you want to.. They also offer the ability to sync whatever folder on your PC or Mac, but this is more like a "sync" feature like some of the other providers offer..

Does anyone know if this also streams video to the iphone?

    Dionte,

David from ZumoDrive here. You can stream iPhone-compatible videos directly to the phone :)

I actually prefer ZumoDrive to Dropbox for two reasons. One is the ease of use; ZumoDrive sets itself up (at least on a PC) to appear as a network drive, not an FTP uplink, so it doesn't break the security protocol in my office like Dropbox does. Two, and as a bit of an addendum to djlaube's comments above, any file accessed on the iPhone can be cached locally (adjusted in Settings), which is a huge win for me. I'm not always in areas of high connection (think airplanes, for example, where I might want to review work documents). I love that you don't need to be connected to view previously-opened documents. I think Dropbox has the same functionality, but I know Box.net and others don't.
