Safety Light for iPhone, or Can the Flashlight App be Redeemed?
Safety Light ($0.99 – iTunes link) riddles us this — can one of the App Store’s most maligned categories, the flashlight app, be redeemed by one of the iPhone’s premiere developers?
Along with fart apps and tip calculators, there’s little that’s been derided more than the humble “lets make a white screen and charge $1 for it” flashlight app. With Safety Light, the Iconfactory‘s Craig Hockenberry, creator of Twitterrific, adds function to the flash.
- Bright flashlight
- Colored lighting effects
- Disco mode!
- SOS emergency flash
Like many, I’ve used the iPhone to light my way on more than one occasion, but Safety Light is the first time I’ve gotten all official (read: bought a flashlight app) for the purpose. But I’m a sucker for audacious design and development.
If you try it, let us know what you think!

Slow news day Rene?
If you’re jailbroken, then the Flashlight(catchy name, huh?) app on Cydia, does one thing that no App Store flashlight app can: It goes to maximum device brightness when you open it, and back to the device brightness level you’ve set, when you close the app.
If you like this App take a look at this one: http://itunes.apple.com/it/app/blackout-light-maker/id284950785?mt=8
Cheers
sync a white pic to your photo library , turn the brightness up , boom — you owe me 99 cent , I gave you a flashlight.
Flash light apps really…..really…….flash light apps…….Sounds like a case of the Mondays at TIPB and still a flash light that doesn’t get brighter.
@OmariJames I owe you 99 cents sir
lol
This is pure BS – all App Store flashlight apps fail in comparison to the Jailbreak Flashlight app, because AS ones can’t control the screen’s backlight brightness, whereas JB app turns it up to the max.
Why can’t someone write an app store flash light that turns up brightness? Even the free Stanza ebook reader can do that with a finger swipe.
Wow.. this is the lamest app I have seen. It looks like all the Hockenberry fan boys have already swarmed to it and praised it with 5-star reviews. Surely none of them will ever actually use it. If you paid for this app, I feel sorry that you need so much attention and have such low self-esteem. Keep up the good work, Frankenberry.
I downloaded the Virtual Zippo App, free, it’s probably better.
now if he makes a f@rt app, will they suddenly be worth it too?
Agree with previous comments about the jail break flashlight app.
Once you’ve used the Flashlight app from Cydia, the Flashlight apps on the official app store suddenly stink! Turning up the brightness to max and back to the previous setting when closed is awesome!
There’s even a flashlight cydget for jailbroken iPhones that you can activate just by pressing the home button from the lock screen. No need to unlock. Full brightness white screen… You have to be an idiot to pay $1 for this kind of app!!!
I am not going to but the app. I really dont know what to think of it. It is only 1.00 but I think I will save my dollar on this one and just use the regular back lighting.
Not to put a crimp in this random and rather odd news story, but the Flashlight app from John Haney Software in the app store is now and always has been free. It’s customizable, and has plenty of additional flashlighty options. I’ve been using it for a long time without issue. Anyone who paid a dollar for their white screened guidance didn’t look very hard.
just use the mail app… it lights my way pretty well.
Take a picture of a bright light, and open it up on your iPhone when in the dark. No need for a stupid app!
I am new to this blog and want to let you know that I think it is great. I just subscribed to your feed and look forward to more of your great posts.
Hey, This is a awesome string. I found you on bing. Keep up the work.
Currently traveling between Miami and Florida, reading this on my Iphone. Will read it in full when I get back, and I will also post a backlink on my website. Thanks.

I have already did this and found it really useful and helpful thanks a lot for such an opportunity
Does this app turn on the camera flash LED? That’s all I used to do on my Moto Q and it was WAY better than just lighting up the screen. It became a true flashlight.
Nicely completed This was a outstanding piece of writing. Do go on as you are. I shall be eagerly waiting.
Undertaking some searching and noticed your web site seems a little messed up in my K-meleon web browser. But thankfully hardly anyone makes use of it any longer but you may possibly would like to appear into it.
I foresee some sort of revolution if this retains up, possibly not automatically a violent 1, but some type of spectacular change.
