Rumored Verizon iPhone to Contain Qualcomm EV-DO Chip

According to TheStreet.com, Apple has struck a deal with San Diego based chip maker, Qualcomm, to supply the EV-DO chip for the rumored Verizon CDMA iPhone. Apple originally showed interest in a chip that would combine both wireless technologies, GSM and CDMA, to make it a world phone but then settled for CDMA when Qualcomm and other chip manufactures could not pull it off.
"Apple has chosen Qualcomm as its chip supplier [3G wireless technology chip for EV-DO] for the new version of the iPhone headed to Verizon this summer, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar," Moritz reports. "Kumar confirmed the decision with the manufacturers and suppliers involved with the phone."
Of course at this particular moment in time Apple has no comment but it just adds more fuel to the fire for the long awaited Verizon iPhone. This is Qualcomm's second big win this week as they are supplying the Snapdragon chip for the much hyped Google Nexus One.

How do we know it's not going to Sprint?
Will they still have an ATT phone if they have this phone. I will not get a iPhone if they leave ATT. Verizons 3g sucks and it is slow and you can't do data and voice at the same time which blows
@chrisr, AT&T will have the next iPhone yes.
If Verizon does get the iPhone it will be interesting to see the commercials. Sure, Verizon's 3G coverage -might- at this moment be superior to ATT, but I've read that ATT is very rapidly rolling out a lot more coverage to compensate for the iPhone. In my state ATT is MATCHING the much vaunted coverage of "Cellular South," even in rural areas.
The big killer for VerizoniPhone is NO DATA while on a call.
TheStreet.com? Wouldn't 99% of what they do, be charitably described as "pump & dump" Apple and other tech stocks?
Do they have any credibility, whatsoever, Jeremy? No.
If you're still deluded, take note of the segment about how easy it is to manipulate Apple stock as a keynote approaches. OK, now put two and two, together... http://www.seekingalpha.com/article/30257-jim-cramer-admits-to-stock-manipulation-when-at-hedge-fund
What's an iPhone ?
Personally to me, Verizon is crap for service. Here in SO CAL AT&T has been good to me. Plus, with all the Verizon aholes who and the defectors of AT&T will only make my iPhone network experience that more enjoyable. Thanks Verizon
you guys can't be serious...att's 3g is a joke...if it weren't for the fact that the iPhone is such a great gadget, the network issues would have spelled disaster...in Verizon I have video streaming, and high end data usage where my iPhone buddies get nothing...iPhone and Verizon together will show what this phone is truly capable of.
Aren't Qualcomm the only people who do CDMA chips anyway?
The point is not AT&T versus Verizon anymore. The point is this opens the door to another 80-90 million customers for Apple. That's tons of additional sales, revenue, apps sold, some mobile me sales, music, TV shows, movies, etc and with the tablet product and slate magazine/newspaper service who knows what else. It also means the handset wars get real by August.
@ k johnson: The latest independent study showed that AT&T had the best 3G network in the country. Not sure if it was reliability or fastest service, though. Don't believe every cry-baby who posts about how bad their 3G service is with AT&T. You usually don't hear from customers who have no complaints. Just saying...
@Chris, I agree. The more iPhone users leave AT&T, the better it is for those who stay--less congestion and more price competition. Unfortunately, they' be back after dealing with Verizon. Not to mention that CDMA sucks batteries big time--you won't need that heater app.
These chips might not be for the iPhone though, they might be for the iTablet/iStale thing that's been rumored to be on Verizon's network. I am excited to see that Verizon will get the iPhone, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up.
I can understand from a bussiness sense to not keep iPhone exclusive but people on verizon will not have the true experience of the iPhone if they cannot use voice and data with their service. I for one am staying with ATT. I wouldn't want my iPhone to look like a walking verizon commercial.
@k Johnson All depends on where you live. AT&T is king where I live (upstate NY). And verizon sucks. Had them before I came to AT&T. Dropped calls, bad coverage, bad connection. And they try to nickel and dime you f that. And yes AT&T's 3g is way better the verizons. And I am 100% sure that when verizon does get the iPhone users will have limited use of the phone. As they will change the way you use the phone, what you can and cannot do, no voice and data. It will be a garbage experience for verizon users. I will will be staying with the best in my area AT&T.
I have no problem with ATT service and my iPhone 3GS. In fact, I switched from Verizon as I was experiencing excessive dropped calls in Kaneohe, Hawaii. AT&T has worked flawlessly and the entire Island of Oahu is blanketed with 3G coverage.
I wonder how Verizon's iphone will handle both background running apps and intermittent calls at the same time, like server-based MotionX GPS Drive? Unless that is an LTE phone, which will have extremely limited coverage if even that tech materializes this year at VZW. AT&T is again winner for this matter.
VZW's iphone should both run on GSM and CDMA platforms, just like the Blackberry Storm.
@the reptile Verizon getting the iPhone will add about 10-20 million new subs. If that. 80-90 million is kinda pushing no? Let's say maybe 5 million leave AT&T to go to verizon for the iPhone which is doubtful. And 10 million people on verizon get the iPhone. Thats 15 million. I personally hope verizon gets a bunch of data hogs and people will see there network is not so great as they say.
I can smell Android becoming oblivious like RIM and WinMo.
I should be thankful if people defects to VZW. (Relief!) more people in Southern California will free-up the network at AT&T. That's like driving 101 and I-5 with fewer cars.
I am crossing my fingers. I'm not an AT&T basher but in my area they are not the best. VZW is wonderful. Its all on the area. You think Apple cares? HEEELLLL NO! Apple sees revenue and customers. Having the top 2 carriers means consumers choose who they want and Apple laughs all the way to the bank.

$$$
I'll beleive it when I see it. Although, I wouldn't do CDMA on any network if you paid me. No simultaneous call/data connection is a no go. It just takes away from the converged device experience. No SIM card, so if something happens to my phone I have to activate another phone to get service... No way.
The only thing good about this if it's true is that Apple can expand it's iPhone user base. RIM better look out, Verizon has been carrying them along for awhile now. If the iPhone goes to Verizon many BB owners will defect. Between Android, the new Pre Plus, Pixi Plus and maybe iPhone coming to Verizon in 2010 this is turning out to be a very interesting year for cellular carriers. I can't wait... Now maybe prices can start dropping as they'll have to compete on services since none of them will be able to hide behind exclusive phone deals anymore. And again if this is true and the iPhone sells anywhere near as much on Verizon as it has on AT&T it will be interesting to see how that network holds up to a data hungry device. In any case June/July can't come quick enough so I can update to iPhone OS 4.0. and the new iPhone goodness it will bring. Nuf said.
Hope it's true. Let the price wars begin!!!
I can hear the dramatic music now.
I just think it's completely ridiculous for anyone to believe that the iPhone will goto Verizon within the next few years. The only way Apple would ever allow it would be if the exact same experience would translate over. Of course service would be different but Apple is not going to approve phone branding, no wifi, bloatware. Lol the phone would have to be exactly the same. A deal like this is not going to magically happen after all those commercials.
Those qualcom chips are for thr islate/itablet. If in fact apple een bought any.
This isn't for a VZW iPhone, it's for the tablet which can run on VZW as one of the choices. No VzW iPhone til LTE. And no ATTs 3G isn't a joke; while VZW has more of it it's data only and not as fast. If they didn't have the iPhone and te 5000% increase in data traffic that came with it no one in the two major spots people complain about ATT would be complaining.
I will never go to Verizon. A Sim chip is mandatory for me. When I travel abroad I want to be able to pop my O2 chip in and use my local top up, not be restricted to CDMA in the states.
AT&T coverage has been great wherever I go. Only place I have ever lost service was in some rural areas among hills where I can understand there being a lack of coverage. If only AT&T lacked towers near Lassen. It's frustrating when you go to experience nature and the outdoors to have someone receiving text messages and all you hear are keyboard taps when you would rather be hearing the wind.
I think it's good for apple to move on to different carriers. Those that don't like AT&T can make the switch and ease the load. I don't think people will be happy with the iphone on verizon though.
It will be exactly the sane except for the radio
you people seem to be forgetting that you need 3g hspa for the simotabipis voice and data and only a fraction of iPhone users have that let alone are able to maintain the 3g signal without dropping to edge or poising signal entirely. The network experience won't be any different from those of us who use an iPhone in an edge only area except it will be faster and work better in buildings.
Excuse the typos in the last post. Damn iPhone keyboard.
"The network experience won’t be any different from those of us who use an iPhone in an edge only area except it will be faster and work better in buildings."
I dunno, when I had VZW there was that creepy guy popping in and saying "Can you hear me now?" while I was in the loo. What a creep!
Ok let say iPhone is going to vzw. So it will cost $200 but you have to pay $500 and wait 6-8weeks for rebate. And what happen to apple moto "my way or the high way" stuff? Don't make it sounds like apple is money hungry because otherwise their computers line would not cost at least $1000. I'm not bashing vzw, but your fanboy can keep dreaming and praying because apple is not going to vzw.
I want to switch to verizon for varies reasons. I am waiting until June for announcement to decide. I am curious if apple goes ahead with verizon; if at&t customers with 3g(s) can switch to their network without paying for a new phone
The chip is not for the iPhone. It's for the tablet.
As much as I thought it would never come to Verizon, maybe it will.
It's a Win / Win for all:
It lets all the people that hate ATT jump ship. Lighten ATT bandwidth, not that its ever gave me issues. It will finally do something about all those people asking if it will ever come to Verizon. (Probably a large fraction of postings at most cell phone websites) Having the Iphone available on the 2 largest carriers in NA, will only force every other maker (RIM, Palm, or Moto) to to step up their game. Then the only thing left for these carriers to do is fight to the death over pricing.
I've been on both networks, none of them is really better than the other. They all have their equal +/-'s
I am still pissed at AT&T for not having 3G coverage on major interstates when both Verizon and Sprint have it.
CDMA can use a SIM if the carrier wants to and it will work in a GSM phone
RUIM card
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RemovableUserIdentity_Module
It's pretty likely they'll also release a 3g version in the states as most of the (normal) world uses GSM
Man I sure hope the iPhone gets another carrier! This would be great for the consumers!! Price Wars anyone??
All of you ATT fanboys that are talking about Verizon not doing simu-voice/data are mindless drones and ATT fanboys. No one was making that argument until ATT came out with those commercials. Hardly anyone uses that feature anyways. Now talking and texting at the same time, yes Verizon can do that and thats about all you need.
People keep talking about all Verizon's "Bloatware" and branding and all that jazz... Clearly that's not the main issue anymore, as Aside from the tiny Verizon logo on the Droid, it has none of it. The Blackberry Storm if I recall may have had the stupid VZW Navigator (but it also has Blackberry GPS I think)
some of you guys swear apple and verizon development teams are retarded or something. You really believe they're not working on a solution to tackle voice and data transfer at the same time? give them a little more credit

An iPhone on the VZW network will do wonders for Apple's stock and their shareholders. I for one am dying for the iPhone on the VZW network. Crappy BB Storm is nothing next to the iPhone but I didn't want to switch to AT&T because in my area it is not very good. I just pray for the VZW iPhone to come out this year.
Great post. Interesting read. One thing - I'm using Google Chrome and I had a few problems posting comments. I know Chrome isn't hugely popular but you might want to check it out.

best for you, http://telemarketingleads.tumblr.com/ telemarketing leads, >:-O,
Hi there, I completely agree with you, this version of MS office is terrible
Its such as you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I think that you just could do with a few p.c. to drive the message house a little bit, however instead of that, this is great blog. An excellent read. I'll certainly be back.
