McGraw-Hill CEO Outs iTablet Before Apple — Runs iPhone OS!
McGraw-Hill’s CEO has outed the iTablet before Apple’s “Come see our latest creation” event, scheduled for tomorrow, revealed it runs the iPhone OS, and undoubtedly has just earned himself a “bag of hurt” at the hands of one Steve Jobs. At 2:50 seconds in, Terry McGraw tells CNBC:
“Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now — we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.”
Yeah. Oops! (But at least we appreciate the news!)

IPhone OS would be kinda lame BUT. non of us know what 4.0 will bring. It could be much more like a mac. I think that makes more sense

Maybe it’s me, but what he said doesn’t necessarily translate to the tablet running an exact iteration of the iPhone OS. Rather, he said that the software products (books) are transferable, which might mean that iPhone 4.0 and some other variant of OS X that the tablet runs on are simply better integrated.
Erin is such a cutie he probably didn’t notice how she zinged that question in at the end.
I bet he has is cell phone OFF right now.

Intentional leak I suspect. The whole thing seemed scripted. From her opening remark, their demeanors and ending conversation. That’s my guess. Could be wrong.

This blog has more readers than CNBC has viewers. If this story hadn’t been posted here, it’d be a pretty good bet that this would still be a secret.
Honestly, just because it’s based off the iPhone os doesn’t mean it is the iPhone os! Could be a new os that takes key elements of iPhone so that users can still use apps but not necessarily use just the iPhone elements.

I doubt it was a mistake. On the eve of the Apple announcement? They’re just priming the blogoshere.
I agree that “based on the iPhone operating system” isn’t that specific, since the iPhone OS itself is based on OSX. But he does say that the transferability has to do with the ability to have the same content (e-books, which are also apps) on the iPhone and the Tablet. But we already knew that from previous rumors about how software developers were informed about making apps screen resolution-independent. So the Tablet has an OS that is essentially the iPhone OS, in that it will run all iPhone apps; but that it will have the ability to do something things that cannot be done on the iPhone (like the LP stuff, just as an example). Based on the need to have full compatibility for mobile apps, I’d say the iPhone and the Tablet get the same OS, but that the iPhone OS will consist of only a subset of the Tablet OS, which includes specifically all that is necessary to run apps on the iPhone. No doubt if and when an app is designed only for the Tablet, you won’t be able to install it on your iPhone at all.
Anyway, this guy isn’t going to get in trouble from Apple. He’s the head of an enormous book publisher. This is an opportunity for Jobs to do what he did with the iTunes music store, but with people he probably has far more respect for than music recording executives. It would be unrealistic for anyone to work with all the major companies that are in the business of publishing information all over the world for the news not to leak. What’s more important is that Apple is in control of all the leaks, that they all serve to enhance anticipation and excitement, and that no one at Apple officially says anything specific before the announcement. Apple — specifically, Steve Jobs — has this down to a science.
What’s interesting is that the “leak” was on a Microsoft outlet. Hmm… What’s in those tea leaves?

Not a leak. No way. Big-time execs like this don’t say anything that isn’t very precise and calculated. They don’t make “mistakes.” This was calculated, in my opinion.

Whoops, I think he didn’t mean to let the cat out of the bag. CEO types like to yak and sound important on a variety of topics, after having worked in such environments for nearly 15 years, what he did is officially called “being a dumbass”.
I was hoping for more OSX than iphone OS. I sure hope the tablet is not a glorified bigger iphone, but can’t wait for tomorrow.
After tomorrow will there be an “The iTablet Blog” so we can get back to the iPhone?
I doubt this guy knows one OS from another. What runs on the iPhone runs in the tablet-thingy, so to him it’s “iPhone OS.”
Steve Jobs is clearly going to acknowledge this tomorrow in his keynote, I wonder how will it’ll go.
Lets get the CNBC thing straight. Most of you are referring to MSNBC. A partnership between Microsoft and NBC as an attempt at being a cable news and information channel. CNBC is a highly respected financial news channel one being CNBC and CNBC-World. If you spend anytime watching financial networks you would know that CNBC is one of the best.
Wow! If I were mr. Steve jobs, I would totally go after that guy and get that contract/partnership/agreement, broken in a heartbeat. Regardless of how much it cost or courts I’d go through! I mean, seriously? This is a one in a life time opportunity to announce something you were excited for. Especially if you wanted to announce it yourself. Damnit, can’t the guy just shut his big mouth up for another 24 hours?! It’s not that hard.

As long as it follows the iPhone style rather than its own look I am happy.
I hope this is a prototype (or in-cased version of iTablet) because I like the look. (without the case) was going to get a macbook aswell as my iMac, but I will see what the tablet can do 1st and the all important price.
