AT&T blocks June holidays again -- countdown to iPhone HD

BGR claims AT&T has begun their yearly tradition of blocking employee holidays for the month of June in anticipation of the 4th generation iPhone (not iPhone 4G but possibly iPhone HD) launch.

A June block suggests a launch that could be as early as last year's June 17 iPhone 3GS affair, but is also consistent with previous years' late-June releases.

We've already seen some leaks -- and lots of fakes and mock ups -- so just consider this another sign of what we all know is coming -- iPhone 2010. And the crazy is sure to come with it!

  1. NevadaScott says:

    yay!!

  2. Ben Gillam says:

if it is called iPhone HD you should put in a request for royalties Rene, it was SO your idea! :D

  3. Nick says:

Looks like I'm sticking w my scratched up 3Gs til June! Saving up for a retail iPhone HD now

  4. Dionte says:

I bet 4.0 is gonna rock on the new HD hardware.

  5. Ben Gillam says:

ditto, and im not making the mistake of going small when i replace my agine 3g, 64gb for me (assuming thats the larger size at the time, i'll take 128gb happily :D )

  6. Gino from the Bronx says:

Sucks to work at AT&T and you're prohibited to take vacation during a summer month like June.

  7. AT.T says:

Weird. I work for the company and can take time off...

  8. Neo says:

    iPhone HD here I come....

  9. Freiteez says:

If it's called iPhone HD it better be HD. It sounds stupid but just look at the Zune HD...it's not even HD haha. Let's up the pixels, OLED screen, slightly bigger screen(so I can see people when doing iChat Snap!) really wanna see what mr. jobs thinks an "A update" will be

  10. Brian says:

Yup I am wanting to see a 64GB model so I can scoop it up and ditch the iPod finally!!!

  11. Edie says:

I told you, you verizon fanboys! Verizon is no where close to getting an iPhone in their posetion, not until (probably.) LTE! And iPhone HD? It's not even official yet, so don't start surprising you readers/visitors yet. Just stick to the iPhone G4 or fourth generation. Not mad, or upset about it, just saying.

  12. Edie says:

    @AT.T,

yeah. Right! hah. You probably work for Verizon, huh?

  13. Mitchell says:

    Stupid 4th iPhone

  14. Noodles says:

Yes the HD is the next iphone, it's basically the current 3GS with an upgraded camera and OS 4.0. Verizon is getting a version. The iphone 4G is going to Sprint, that will have a front facing camera.

  15. pn2bade says:

I bet you ten bucks it's going to be released on June 22. It's late in the month and that is a Tuesday

  16. Yobad says:

Where is noodles getting this crazy (likely untrue) info?

  17. Rob says:

honestly, I do not understand why people want a widescreen portable device.

Widescreen (16x9) HD devices are generally used to display content like a movie theater does, which is why the whole 16x9 aspect ratio was created. You sit back and watch a nice, large picture. If you have a smaller HDTV, you have crisp quality images.

Once the device's screen gets to 10 inches or less in size, the actual pixel density is so packed that most video looks good on it anyway. And a device like the iPhone with it's 3 inch, there just isn't enough room for that many pixels without any technical issues.

The PSP has a 4x3 screen. The Nintendo DS has two 4x3 screens. The iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad have 4x3 screens. The iPad CAN play 720P video. Yes, but it will have black bars. Guess what? Even a Bluray that says "1080P full HD" can have black bars, because MOST movies are NOT 16x9 natively. I have watched many supposed "1080P" movies on my HDTV and have run into quite a number with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

When it comes to media consumption, humans are very much use to a particular size document we hold in our hands. A book. Most books are 4x3 (or in the actual case, 3x4. when opened up it is closer to 4x3). Letter size paper is 4x3 (roughly). Normally people do not read from Legal paper (which would be closer to 16x9). It has to do with how "natural" the item feels, because of how the proportions feel. We have also had the concept of holding a book sized object in our hands for multiple hundreds of years.

The only time I have run into "tall" books have been things like pocket reference guides (which are more 1x1 ratio once opened), or menus at some restaurants. Both of these are things you are NOT going to be reading for an extended period of time.

That being said, would I like it if my iPhone, iPad and AppleTV could all PLAY the same video files? Yes, because that saves the storage space needed for multiple copies. Will I care if the screen of my iPad or iPhone cannot display every single pixel originally in the video? Nope, because the screen is far too small for me to have any appreciation of the added quality. With my 47" HDTV, I can stand 1 foot away from the screen and bask in the detail.

  18. Yobad says:

Well with the (assumed) dates for WWDC 2010 (jun 28 - july 2). I don't think we will see the 4th gen/iPhone HD until early July

  19. Rob says:

quick correction: looking at my PSP again, the aspect ratio is just a bit off from 16x9 (more like 15x9, since Sony WAS attempting to sell movies on the thing via UMDs (we see how well that went)). I do know one thing, my PSP and DS are both collecting dust simply because they are far too uncomfortable for me to play for an extended period of time. Whereas I can play my iPhone's games until the battery dies and not have too much discomfort in my hands/fingers.

  20. Joe McG says:

    @Rob

The Droids higher res screen does blow away the iPhones screen..

  21. EdLong says:

iPhone Fail! Jobs thinks everyone will keep flocking because it is Apple. People are going to be mad when the get a new Android phone this summer and find that Apple has ripped them with their DRM music! Rob - you have way to much time on your hands.

  22. Dragonfly says:

All I want is a 5 mega pixel camera with a flash at least, dedicated camera hardware button would be a plus. A screen that matches the HTC Desire or Droid in terms of size and resolution, a 1GHZ processor with at least 512 Ram. Thats not too much to ask for is it?

  23. Vaca says:

I work for Cust Service @ att and the WHOLE month of June is available for vacation....they don't tell us in advance when the phones come out we basically find out with you guys :-/

  24. adam says:

@Rob - I'm no videophile but I'm fairly certain 1080P has nothing to do with the aspect ratio of 16:9 or 4:3 and it has everything to do with how many pixelated lines it can display (or maybe uncode) and the way in which it displays/scans them. P standing for progressive and I for interlaced. I think P being multiple lines at a time, while I being one line at a time.

You can watch standard definition programming and there will still be black bars.

  25. Crunch says:

We already know that it'll have 960x640, no? If so, that's plenty HD. :D

Count me in. Time to put the 3GS on craigslist. haha

  26. John says:

I doubt it is going to be called iPhone HD. Probably something like 3GX

  27. Edie says:

    I'd say iPhone HDS.

  28. Michael LK says:

I work for AT&T and we all got emails saying we weren't allowed any vacation time for the whole month of June. We received the email wednesday morning. My boss even told all of us he doesn't want any of us missing work on a certain day of June. He's going to schedule all employees to an open-close shift. They haven't told us what the big secret is. I have a copy of the email that I would love to show, but I'm not taking the risk. To sum everything up - yes, this article is 100% true.

  29. SomeGuy says:

    @ Michael LK

Saying you have a huge, unimaginable secret I wouldn't believe...yet saying you don't wanna expose it for "X" reason, is pretty pointless.

  30. Michael LK says:

@Someguy What i don't wanna show is the email we got about the vacationing in June.

  31. CupertinoSweat says:

whatever happened with that patent apple filed for about the tactile feedback?

  32. John Olesen says:

I've actually heard the "iPhone HD" will be the version launched on Verizon, and AT&T will get another obligitory refresh. Just wanted to pass that along..

  33. John Olesen says:

and in response to the AT&T employee. He'd lose his job if he was to share the email. I work for Verizon, and its the same way. I could of been sending out emails to blogs regarding the HTC Incredible for weeks, but I like being employeed, and dont want to chance it. Kudos to you sir!

  34. Edie says:

    @John Olsen,

Did you get an e-mail stating not to vacation or to not miss a day in the month of June?

  35. MrC says:

Well, if true surely they couldn't cancel an employee's holiday if it had already been approved and this block only applies to new holiday bookings?

As for the HD screen I doubt the new iPhone will have 960x640 resolution. That's just unnecessary on a 3.5" screen and Apple rarely ever plays a straight spec competition. If anything I think it will be another IPS LCD with the usual evolutionary improvements in quality and a 640x480 resolution. OLED is still expensive and cannot be viewed easily in direct sunlight.

  36. Silver Fox says:

Wonder how many people are now rethinking about buying an iPad, knowing they will be asked by Apple to shell out hundreds of pounds for the next gen iPhone a few weeks later in June Or may be Apple going to screw us over again here an make us wait

  37. Macboy15 says:

Listen when Apple comes out with the new iphone and verizon gets it which I doubt they will. Its not going to be different then what At&t gets. Do you think Apple is going to make two totally different phones? Besides the different radios.

  38. Art VanBurenBoy says:

I'm sure they can track every email and find out who posted it here  if you are anonymous here and use a screen name like Donald Duck , then they're gonna fire the squeeky bird , not you ! ;)

  39. James in Toronto says:

How many people think AT&T and Rogers will give a discount to people who aren't yet eligible for an upgrade like they did last year?

If you had 3 months of bills over $99. They allowed a discount....same rule this year????

  40. Mims says:

I really don't think it is going to be called HD because that is what some of the ipad apps are called. If the new iPhone was called HD, it may cause confusion.
