iPhone HD/iPhone 4G video iChat to be featured in commercial directed by Sam Mendes

Looks like Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty has been tapped to create some new iPhone HD/iPhone 4G commercials for Apple. Further, Engadget tipsters brings word that the device, known internally as the Mammoth N90, will have a mother and daughter highlighting its iChat video feature in at least one of the commercials.

While it’s not unprecedented for cameras to disappear from final Apple release products (see iPod touch G3 and possibly iPad), the front-facing iChat video camera is looking like a surer bet every day.

Now will AT&T charge extra for it, and would you use it?

  1. Tres says:

As apple do, this we revolutionize the video chat concept on phones. I wouldn’t surprise me if in 2 years everyone is doing it. Old concept made good by apple

  2. UTVOL06 says:

I think video chat would be cool. The big question is will ATT allow it and if they do allow it…how soon? If they do how much? Perhaps at the least give us apps that allow us to video chat over wifi for free.

I really like the idea of American Beauty director making new iphone HD commercials. Personally if I had apple’s budget I’d be getting some A list comedian celebs in at least one of the commercials doing ichat.

  3. Dionte says:

I’m trying to remain calm since it looks like I won’t be able to upgrade til September but it’s not gonna be easy.

  4. Mr79 says:

It would not suprise me if iChat can only be used on WiFi only. If At&t decides to charge for iChat use, that would be the breaking point for me.

  5. MRKW says:

If iphone HD is going to have video chat, and all the tea leaves indicate they will, and Verizon’s current network doesn’t support data and voice transmission at the same time, see AT&T and Apple’s ads, will the iphone HD work on Verizon’s network? Will Verizon be able to get iphone HD? Or will they get a different version, one without video chat?

  6. csullivan1980 says:

I can’t wait either way, I’m ready for an iPhone. My Verizon contract ends in two weeks. I’ve waited long enough and hopefully I’ll have one of the best hardware versions as my first. I’m excited about iChat on the iPhone, I think it would be a smart move to allow it over a cell phone network. What that will to do the network is anybody’s guess but I don’t see the point of using iChat over just a Wi-Fi network (like at home) when I can just use my Macbook for that.

  7. Gino from the Bronx says:

Just because of the fact that verizon can’t do voice and data at the same time is even more of a reason for AT&T to offer this free of charge just to 1-up their main competitor.

Besides, isn’t paying $150 a month enough already?

  8. OmariJames says:

AT&T better not change more for it , I’d do without.

  9. guinness0514 says:

It was my understanding that Verizon is working on data/voice funtionality. I read a post on it. Just don’t remember when it was to be completed….

  10. EM says:

Video chat over 3G would probably be data only for both sound and picture so no need for simultaneous voice and data…

  11. Fedy says:

@ Gino from the Bronx – I couldn’t agree more!

  12. Matt says:

Assuming the iPhone HD has this video chat cam, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them announce it at WWDC. BUT, then there will be the LONG period of time that AT&T spends “upgrading” their network to support this feature. Maybe this is why news broke recently that AT&T was pushing to rollout LTE this year???

  13. Crunch says:

Who removed my post? Censorship at Tibp? Say it ain’t so.

  14. Thomas Eller Jr says:

Will not go to VERIZON for the last time… not this summer anyways!

  15. shollomon says:

My concern is not that T will charge extra for the service, but that AAPL will consider iChat a core function on the device (like mail or the browser) which no other application will be allowed to usurp. I want to use Skype where everyone I care to video call already has an account. I don’t want another chat account and nobody wants to have to load another crummy iApp (consider rant on the crappiness iTunes on Windows inserted here) on their Windows machines (70% plus of iPhone users).

  16. Joost says:

I definitely would use the video chat feature. As I’m planning on upgrading mine and getting one for my wife the usefulness will be never-ending.

  17. NestoB says:

    So who posted the tweet?

My 1st iPhone was the 3Gs. I jailbroke it within the first couple of weeks & now I’ll never use an iPhone that’s not jailbroken. So it’s a safe bet that I’ll be able to use iChat for free on 3G regardless if the T tries to restrict it to Wi-Fi only or charge for it! Thanks dev_team!

  18. JonnyPancakes says:

If ATT charges for it, I’ll burn down headquarters, cause I’d use that ALL the time :D

Then again, I’d also probably just use 3G Unrestrictor from Cydia if ATT wanted to charge for it.

  19. SteveBalmer says:

Why do you guys assume it’s called iChat? Lol. This will be for sure on wifi. AT&T sucks as it is. This feature would cripple their network.

  20. SheiknetChris says:

I love her attitude in the post that it is a “F***ing” commercial.

If it is beneath her, why doesn’t she just stick to theater or film?–BWAHAHAHAHA!

Unless her disdain is for “apple”, then maybe she can audition for a Nokia commercial instead!

  21. Joe G says:

Matt. AT&T did not recently announce that hey were implementing LTE early. They just stated that their network was all getting upgraded to 7.2mb/second. Gsm.

  22. Ted says:

I love the first listing that apple will be first to market. In europe video conference / chat phones are old hat. And the sprint evo already has it. of course apple will still call it magical and revolutionary, and a person like that poster will believe it.

  23. antonsoze says:

@SheiknetChris…I think she’s happy about the possibility…like “F**kng Yeah, an Apple Commercial”. She’s obviously excited about the possibility…she’s praying for it to happen.

  24. mark says:

How can the first post say apple will revolutionize ichat, the evo already has one and even in europe since 2000 people have been doing it. we all love apple but please be objective .apple does not revolutionize any thing its just good marketing and people like you.

  25. Neo says:

The evo has a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera right?

  26. meh says:

I really don’t think video chat over cell network is what you’re all making it out to be. It should function like any other streaming video with voice embedded in the stream format. It aint gonna use voice AND data… All the people just spewing $hit should have a clue about how things work first, then ask your question or leave your comment…

  27. mehzilla says:

  28. Adam says:

@MRKW: video chat is not data and voice, it’s data only. It’s just like chatting on skype.

  29. Oskyriver says:

Another extra 15 a month like they did when the 3gs came out I’m sure

  30. chris says:

Thanks Adam cause I was wondering y no one on here would know that

  31. icebike says:

Seriously, who gives a rip about who directs a commercial? Who even KNOWS this stuff?

  32. scottae316 says:

Who know what AT&T will or will not do. We are still waiting for tethering from AT&T and it is coming up on a year. I would like the new iPhone, but if they charge much or at all for video chat and they don’t implement tethering the 3Gs may very well be my last iPhone. I can’t blame Apple for this, it is squarely on AT&T. Yes I know you can do it by jailbreaking the iPhone, but I don’t see why I should have to violate the user agreement to use a feature on the phone that is there and that most other smart phones on AT&T can do.

  33. rgar3388 says:

it’s only gonna work on wifi…they posted code on this earlier in the month.

  34. Club Penguin says:

THe new iphone looks pretyy cool!
