Apple iPhone orders pushed back to July 14.

Last night, Apple sold out of iPhone 4's with a June 24 delivery date and pushed back all orders to July 2. Now those orders have sold out and the new shipping date is July 14.

It's no question that the iPhone 4 is a huge hit this year, more so than previous years. We learned earlier that 600,000 iPhone 4 orders were placed yesterday. With the shipping date being pushed back yet again, how many orders do you think have been placed now?

Were any of you putting off ordering your iPhone because of yesterday's chaos and now regret it? Who placed an order today, and which shipping date did you get?

Apple releases iTunes 9.2 -- now iOS 4, iPhone 4 ready
  1. bsangs says:

    Can't wait to see how many people blame AT&T for Apple running out of iPhones already...

  2. chris says:

    I am so thrilled I got my pre order in, and Apple gets it to me launch day! For some reason I am so very excited, i dont even know why. But GD, did California really have to charge us residents the tax amount as if it wasn't subsidized? wow, i paid like $50 in taxes,,,,,yikes!

  3. PhxGirrl says:

    I'm upset because I tried to port my number from Verizon to AT&T and they told me that I couldn't pre-order the 32GB, I had to wait until the 24th becuase I wanted to port my number. Now its going to take how long to get one?? You'd think they wouldn't have an issue welcoming a new customer. I'm pissed cause now i will have to wait until some time mid July to get a phone, just cause I wanted to keep my old number. That is so wrong.

  4. Andy says:

    @bsangs

    exactly. fanboys will blame T for this. I hear its a production issue that has stalled out and we could not see all orders filled until late summer.

    T is furious at Apple for messing up this launch.

  5. Jkelly89 says:

    @bsangs- I totally agree.. I'm upset though I true reserving my iPhone yesterday and it just would not go through the system .. I know all the reasons why , so my local radio shack has resorted to writing information down on pen and paper and have told the few customers asking for the phone that they will call us as soon as the phones are shipped and hold on to them for the customer to come in and pick up, even if people off the street are able to come in and reserve later on.

  6. dan says:

    I really hope "delivers on June 24" actually means June 24th.

  7. Leanna Lofte says:

    @PhxGirrl - You can still get in line on the 24th and purchase a phone without a reservation and port your number. You'll want to be sure to get there real early though so they don't sell out before it's your turn in line.

  8. Leanna Lofte says:

    @dan - It does. Apple has always been very good about having new products delivered on launch day.

  9. James says:

    I'm one of the 600k that's going to the promised land, so I am happy I stayed up late and ordered in the first hour. :)

    The reality is, anyone could have seen this coming. Based on previous years, you either get in early or you end up waiting a month or two. It's a phone in high demand, added on to the fact that AT&T widened up the range of people eligible to upgrade with subsidy. A lot of people skipped the 3G to 3Gs upgrade because it wasn't offered on subsidy (I did). All those people qualify now. Add that to a lot of 3Gs people that qualify, as well as new orders, etc. It's going to be a cluster...

  10. jonar1us says:

    Y would you do pre-order and wait till the 14th of July when you can just go to the store on LAUNCH DAY...Im pretty sure everyone has a WALMART somewhere near them...USE YOUR HEAD PEOPLE!!!

  11. James says:

    Jonar1us, yeah, you and a couple thousand of your closest friends... I expect to see people camping out a day or two in advance to get a chance at it.

  12. Jrcharger says:

    I was gonna wait until today but as soon as I heard AT&T wasn't taking anymore pre-orders I jumped into the frying pan and managed to snatch a 32GB for June 24 delivery date on apple.com :)

  13. Andy says:

    I'm having pre-orderer's remorse. The Evo looks sweet. Can I sell someone my pre-ordered phone and June 24 reservation?

  14. Hassan says:

    It seems like every 24 hours the shipping day is pushed back 10 days. Not sure if this will be a linear trend, but if so, buying online from apple after launch day might not ship until mid to late august. Finding an iphone 4 in a store after launch day will be impossible for weeks. I hope apple operations is ramping up their numbers with foxconn (or whoever their suppliers are).

    Thank my stars I got mine preordered shipping on the 24th (after 10 hours of trying).

  15. Count Zero says:

    I have no idea how I did it but I managed to get an order through AT&T's website yesterday (around 11:00 AM). Got the confirmation e-mail and my card's been charged, so I'm hoping this means I'll really get it on 6/24. Fingers crossed...

  16. James says:

    Incidentally, I fully expect activation problems all day on 6/24. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up taking the phone home from the store to activate it (assuming I don't end up screwed and my pre-order/reserved phone isn't there).

  17. James says:

    Andy, check your e-mail and see what it asks for. I think that will answer your question.

  18. chris says:

    @Andy, you cant sell your reservation unless you let the person take over your identity, you need to be there....oh and have fun with your EVO, you and the 7 other dudes I see using them are having a blast I am sure

  19. emtp563 says:

    I live on the East Coast, so that meant the pre-orders/reservations started at 4 a.m. on Thursday. Luckily, I was at work and started the process at 4 a.m. (12:00 a.m. Cupertino time). It took me an hour and a half of errors and timeouts, but I finally got me iPhone 4 reserved for pickup at my local Apple Store next Thursday at 7 a.m. June 24th. I got the confirmation e-mail from Apple (screenshot: http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/3341/croppercapture75m.jpg). Just do double-confirm I went to my Apple Store today and had them lookup my account in their system. Sure enough, I was there and do have a phone reserved for pickup on the 24th. Looks like I was one of the 600,00 lucky ones.

  20. chris says:

    @ James....I get my delivered by Apple on Launch day, I plan on activating it Friday morning, no way am I not having my main line not be active on the 24th....I assume thats the route to go for those in our shoes :)

  21. James says:

    Chris, you're one of the elite of the 600k then. The first into the promised land, vs those of us that have to trudge to the store... :) My understanding is your old phone (assuming you are upgrading from an AT&T phone) is not deactivated until the new phone is activated. So you wouldn't be out a phone. You're activating it in iTunes.

  22. PhxGirrl says:

    @ Leanna Lofte - thanks for your comment, but the porting has to be done through my office benefits department so I can take advantage of their "grandfathered" (and subsidized) data plan. I don't know if they can call her (as I stand in the store) once I get phone to make sure the switch-over goes smoothly? I can see it being a huge cluster and more of a nightmare than I'm willing to go through right now. Ugh!! I. just. wanted. to. pre-order. yesterday. period.

  23. James says:

    Well, assuming iTunes is working Thursday. Which I don't expect it to be with 600k people all trying to activate their phones...

  24. csullivan1980 says:

    @PhxGirrl I too wanted to port my number from Verizon to AT&T but when I was ordering I had 3 tabs open on Safari. Now I cant remember if my number is going to port or if i am getting a new number come June 24th.

    I just hope the activation process is without any trouble when I get it.

  25. Admrl says:

    Couldn't get an order to go through yesterday. This morning my order went through at 7:30 am CST.

    Delivery date is July 2nd.

  26. chris says:

    @Count Zero, dude you have a phone, youre fine. Chill, if they took your money, you're getting it next week....chill

  27. PhxGirrl says:

    @Csullivan - If I knew what I know now, I might have forgone porting my number and just got a new one. Now its mid-August - you gotta be kidding me! The worst is that I dropped my BBerry on Sunday and now I have nothing until ????? I'm going to have to buy a used BBerry online so I have something until I am switched over. hits head against a brick wall

  28. schrutefarms says:

    I'm telling you all... BEST BUY!!!!!... Walked in walked out in less than ten minutes and they have the best warranty for the phone.

  29. t0m says:

    Phone comes, you plug into iTunes, it activates. Why on Earth would you wait at a store to have someone do that for you? Why would you do local pickup anyway? I can't think of one good reason. All these people ordering a SMART phone aren't very, well, smart.

  30. Justin Leon says:

    Any strategies for being on standby. How early should I camp on line since I didn't get a preorder. :(

  31. Mr79 says:

    I ordered 2 phones, separately. The emails I got say this: "Pre-orders will be fulfilled beginning June 24, 2010. Orders will ship on a first-come, first-served basis. We will notify you by email when your order ships."

    Not sure what that even means... First come, first serve?

  32. Ben says:

    iTunes 9.2 is out.

  33. Thorndy says:

    What does this mean for people who reserved a iPhone or will be camping out on the 23rd?

  34. chris says:

    @ Mr70, it means what it means, when you're order was placed you must have ordered as launch day deliveries were sold out, so now you're in a que, behind others who missed the time of preorder cut off fo rlaunch day, and its frist come first serve in the que, pretty simple....

    @ Justin leon, my thoughts and help on standby is, don't bother unless you want to camp the night before and pray you get one, thats the best you'll get....btw, its just a phone, you can wait until 2 weeks after release day?

  35. adam says:

    Ordered mine around 11AM EST, received confirmation at 11:17AM. Order is live in AT&T premier's system.

    Anyone else get their order through the premier site? Gotta love my 22% service discount. $59.49/mo before taxes with 200 texts.

  36. Joost says:

    Of course, this is also going to push back Canada's launch I bet. I'll be surprised if we see it before the end of July... probably September.

  37. bradsea says:

    I was lucky enough to get through about 10:30 yesterday after about 2 hours of trying, I got the same email as Mr79 and my card has been charged. I knew it would be tough to get through, I feel pretty lucky after reading all of this.

  38. Steve says:

    July 14th, are they trying to get the iphone 4 released on the same date on every country???

  39. Marlin C says:

    I managed to get my order in at 10:30PM last night through Apple.com using my iPad. Got the confirmation email today at 3PM which stated my delivery date is the 24th :)

  40. Bcald7 says:

    Wonder how many of those presales will actually get to activate on launch day. AT&T presales were glitchy... I can't imagine

  41. Crimsonsky says:

    I put my pre-order in around 7:30 A.M. EDT on the 15th and it went through without a hitch. I was actually surprised that it did - I expected problems and didn't have any. @adam - I also got mine through the Premier site.

  42. jason says:

    I decided yesterday around 3:30PM PST to give it one more shot and finally got to a screen in the process I had not seen. I was so excited, i hit a wrong button and zapped the screen out. I thought my phone dreams of the 24th were gone cause i could not get back on again. But then I looked in my Apple Check Out Cart and there was my phone. It was still there. So i checked out and now June 24th is back again.

  43. Noir says:

    I have mine on reserve with conf email and even checked my reservation at the store online, all good to go. Now if anyone also wants to buy a 3G, let me know, not sure I need 2.

  44. Michael says:

    I placed my pre order via apples new apple app on my iPhone and I received an email from apple to pick my phone up on the 24th after 7:am I will be there early ^_^ woot woot

  45. Anthony says:

    Thank god I got mine yesterday haha. It took all day but I'll have my iPhone in my hands June 24th!

  46. beedoublejay says:

    I went to the apple web site around 10am this morning, it said the ship date was going to be July 2nd. I got busy at work and had to revisit the site around 11:30am to complete the transaction, my order went through right away but the ship date was July 14th.

    Oh well, anyone wanna buy a 32gb 3G(S)? Haha

  47. HBcubs says:

    So I tried placing an order through the Apple Store App yesterday afternoon and it simply lagged out. Today I decided to bite the bullet today and just order one for delivery on the 14th - upon receiving the confirmation email, I noticed that I received an email from Apple at noon stating, "Pick up your reserved iPhone." Needless to say I cancelled my July 14th order with Apple right away. Looks like I'm getting my phone on the 24th. Chock it up to dumb luck.

  48. JRB says:

    So I have a question. Is the Apple store going to be crazy allllll day, or will the crowd kind of thin out as the day goes on, especially after they run out of the "first come, first serve" phones? I reserved mine for pick up on the 24th at the store, and I talked to a rep today from that specific store, and she assured methat meant that there would be a phone sitting there for me all day until close. Now, I'm not planning on waiting until ten minutes before closing to waltz in and pick up my phone, but if I waited until say, 2:00 then 1)Am I running the risk of them screwing me? And 2)is there a chance the crowd might not be so, well, crowded? Becaus I can wait until a little later in the day to get my phone, AS LONG AS IT WILL BE THERE. I have the confirmation email and the cofirmation on the app, so I figured that was sufficient. Thoughts?

  49. James says:

    Read the bottom of the confirmation e-mail JRB. It could be CYA, but it's worried me enough that I'm going bright and early.

  50. JRB says:

    @James,

    I checked my email, and it says "Please note that your reservation will be held until close of business on June 24". I would say that means I'll be ok, right?

  51. Fraydog says:

    Now the AT&T people have got on here and blame Apple for a bungled launch. Absolutely amazing.

  52. BarryL says:

    This is lame! I was thinking of getting a white 32gb to replace my 32gb 3gs. But this is madness. Last night I witnessed the droid X! MY GOD what a huge screen 4.4 inches and the speed was amazing. I'm not a verizon fan.. had AT&T for 7 years but this is ridiculous I'm going droid X thanks but no thanks it's been nice AT&T.

  53. csan says:

    i am on the 24th get off work at 9:30pm on the 23rd i live in toledo so hoping it wont be too crazy if there is not line or a short one on the 23rd i will sleep in my car lol

  54. csan says:

    wow should of reread that last message lol sorry

  55. Chris M says:

    i preordered mine on the 15th (thankfully) at 11am and i will be getting it via delivery. Although im quite sure mine will get here on friday and not thursday.

  56. Frank says:

    So just to clarify, if you managed to get a pre-order in on the first day, you'll definitely get it on or close to the 24th?

    Most places I'm reading don't make that clear and it kind of implies that everyone will be waiting until July 2nd/July 11th regardless of when you ordered.

  57. J Hoffy says:

    I went into the AT&T store here, and reserved one. Apparently it wasn't processed until this morning. So AT&T sent me an email saying that it should be available for pick up on the 24th, if not, then they said the latest would be the 28th.

  58. Jane says:

    OMG, so late! I can't wait any more, I think there must many folks like me! Now maybe we could wait in line the day it comes out. Just get our ass up way early. Get there early enough and get one. I was 4th in line (should have been 2nd but had to hit the bathroom) for the 3GS at my local store. Walked out and still made it to a show at my kids school to film it with my new WHITE 3GS. The new iPhone really tempting, A Review of Apple iPhone 4 located in ifunia column list its features shocked me.

  59. Dezman says:

    Just preordered a 32GB Iphone 4 on the Apple website and they said that I can pick it up on the 24th. I was thinking it would tell me that I couldnt pick it up until the 14 of July or something!

  60. Jared says:

    Ordered an iPhone 4 32GB this morning at 11:30AM PST. Got the 14th as my shipping date with standard shipping (why, I don't know..), so the delivery is July 15th-19th. Grrrr!

  61. Hahahah says:

    Everyone is using pre ordered and reserved interchangably. Pre order is an order u pay for. Gaurentees u a phone. Reservations are easy to get. But are still first come first serve. I pre ordered, my money was held in my account, and its getting shipped to me and delivered to hse on 24th.

  62. Andy says:

    anyone reserved and does not plan on camping out for at least 2 days will likely NOT get a phone

  63. JRB says:

    @hahahah

    I just talked to a rep at an apple store last night before close, and he told me that by reserving an iPhone at their store, that it was guaranteed to be an iPhone there for me no matter what time I went in, whether at seven in the morning or three in the afternoon. If I'm not there by closing, they will sell my iPhone to the next person who walks in, but he assured me that they would not sell my iPhone out from under me. Maybe he's lying because they obviously will sell an iPhone either way, but that's what he said.

  64. Andy says:

    @JRB

    That is not entirely true. There are definitely more reservations than actual inventory. The presumption is a lot of people double ordered or reserved and pre ordered. But if every reservation goes, being last person in the door does not guarantee you a phone. But you probably get one the next day. I expect lines to be massive on Day 1 with people who have "reservations".

    I have an AT&T pre-order (5am on June 15) - so I'll probably get mine in September ;)

  65. JRB says:

    @Andy,

    sorry for all the questions, buy if they run through all thereserved phones on day one and I somehow don't get one, how would I get one the next day? Do more come in the next day, or do they hold some over or people who don't show up or something? If that's the case, why woulnt they just sell them on day one?

  66. Andy says:

    @JRB

    They get whole shipments for in store pick up each day. They want people coming to the stores.

    Either way, I have a backup reservation in case AT&T pulls some BS with my pre order. If all else fails, I will go near close of business to see if my reservation has held but I have no intention of waiting in some massive line.

  67. Ron says:

    Ordered a black 32GB on 6/15. My printed receipt from the online Apple Store says "Delivers on June 24th".

  68. Andrea says:

    @Andy, when I went to order mine at AT&T on the 15th, they told me that by pre-ordering (and giving them my credit card) I would have an iPhone waiting for me with my name on it, no matter what time I got there on the 24th. He said that because my credit card will be charged when the iPhone ships, the box will have my name on it, guaranteeing that they won't sell it to anyone else. According to my receipt, I have 7 days to pick it up at the store. He also assured me that I will not have to wait in the long line of people who didn't pre-order - rather, using my receipt as proof, I can walk right in and get my phone that day. I really hope he is right, because I don't want or have the time to wait in some long freaking line. I know I will have to wait my turn for activation, and that's reasonable, but the whole point of pre-ordering is to have the phone waiting for me.

  69. Andrea says:

    And does anyone know when cases and accessories will be available? I have been STALKING the Case Mate website, but they always say "COMING SOON" for all things iphone 4. I would LOVE to have a case with me on the day that I pick up my phone. I went ahead and ordered a screen protector (I know it's not necessary, but I'm paranoid like that).

  70. Tim says:

    My printed receipt for my 32GB says "Delivers on June 24th" too, but my confirmation email says "Delivers by July 2." I also ordered a 16GB for my other half at the same time and that confirmation still says it will deliver on the 24th.

  71. Andy says:

    @andrea

    That may be right for pre-orders, But some here are confusing pre-order and reserve. There will be a bit more of a mess for those only with "reservations"

  72. Andy says:

    My buddy at AT&T said if you pre ordered early on the 15th your card may not get charged until next week (if you provided CC info on the site).

    In terms of shipment, it is (for the most part) going in a first come first serve basis. There is a slight chance some could get there phone on the 24th depending on when Apple sends them their shipment. Most will get it 25th-28th.

    I guess better than mid-July.

  73. JRB says:

    @Andrea,

    that's hilarious about stalking the case-mate website, because I have been doing the same thing. I actually read somewhere that the case mate cases won't be ready to ship until fall. Not positive, though. However, check out geeksugar dot com bc they have been previewing a lot of cases, and one they showed said it would be ready by late June, so I might give those a try. I really want the tough case from case-mate on my phone from the second I pick it up at the store, but I don't guess thats going to happen.

  74. JRB says:

    @Andy

    I tlked to another rep from Apple. He also promised me that there would be a phone for me no matter what time I went in, as long as I was there before close on the 24th. He even encouraged me to NOT get there so early in the morning, he said there was no reason for me to wait in a massive line when I can come later in the afternoon a not be in a Huge crowd. His exact words were: "Ma'am, it's Apple. We want to Live up to our promises to our customers, and If you reserved a phone, then a phone will be here." he was very nice and polite. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I guess we'll see on Thursday!!

  75. Andy says:

    my email conformation said july 2nd so will it still ship out on the 2nd or not

  76. Theo Mathison says:

    I have recently started a website, the information you provide on this web site has helped me greatly. Thanks for all of your time & work.
