In a short interview with RackSpace's Robert Scoble, Cydia founder Jay Freeman (better known as Saurik) demonstrates some of the Jailbreak tweaks and apps he uses on his iPhone, and also explains some of the benefits of having a jailbroken iOS device.

If you’re still on the fence over jailbreaking, have a look at the video after the break. If you decide to try it out, we have an awesome guide right here. If you do run into any problems, we also have a superb jailbreak forum that can help you out.

Video after the break!

UPDATE: YouTube pulled the video for "content violations" so we've switched the embed below to MusleNerd's Vimeo upload. Hopefully YouTube can get their act together and we can switch back...

    thats bada$$

  2. EagleyeSmith says:

GreatVideo. I want to know how she got that black keyboard! I've been trying to find a theme to make all my keyboards look like the black/transparent alert keyboard that pops up when you buy from iTunes/AppStore ... etc. No dice.

    • EagleyeSmith says:

Finally! It's called "black keyboard" in Cydia. Haha

      • Iphonerulez says:

Also try "color keyboard" it has a nice black theme that comes with it!

        • Josh says:

          Just to clarify

Black Keyboard - Changes the background behind the letters to Black, but the letters and 'buttons' are still the original color.

Color Keyboard ($2 app) is the one you see in the video with the full keyboard being black. It also had pink, rounded, and background image.

  3. Ghop says:

Damn! That vid makes me wanna jailbreak. To jailbreak or not to jailbreak, that is the question. Hmmm!

  4. cesar says:

so does anyone know what the name of the app is in cydia that makes your screens roll like saurik's does in the video? and does anyone know how to get that black keyboard. ive tried downloading keyboard themes but none of them seem to work..any help would be greatly appreciated

  5. MikeD says:

So we need to break all the rules because it will look "cool"...

    • Some Dude says:

LOL. Good call man. You wouldn't want to risk the iOS Gestapo banging your door down in the middle of the night.

    • LGgeek says:

No we want to jailbreak because it annoys the crap out of the borg. Kind of like not coloring between the lines, on a phone.

      • iPerson says:

That's definitely not the only reason to jailbreak. There is a lot of functionality that Apple does not (yet) support. Just an example: A few times now I used Veency to get into my parent's iPhone and show them how to do different things - my parents and I live in different countries.

  6. Abdul says:

Does anyone know the app that's shows a white circle when the screen is tapped?

  7. Thekidship says:

BUT ANY chance will It damage your phone in anyway??!? don't have enough money to replace my IPhone 4!

    • EagleyeSmith says:

You're fine man. I've been jailbreaking iDevices since the first gen iPod Touch and I've never had any major issues. Nothing that a reset or restore can't fix. (IF something happens to go wrong) Do it!

  8. Thekidship says:

Somebody at apple needs to give this guy a job lol wish these features came out the box

  9. Ronn says:

Right. Just think if Steve jobs employed him. Or if he secretly does employ him. All bases covered.

  10. websyndicate says:

Wait til you see bitesms people. Best texting app in the world.

    • stevef says:

@websyndicate couldn't agree with you more... bitesms is awesome along with SBS Settings, if for nothing else those 2 apps are worth the jailbreak

      • Chong says:

i absolutely agree these 2 apps are the main reason i keep jailbreaking.

      • JB says:

Absolutely. I'm also loving qtweeter - it's awesome when I want to just fire off a quick tweet. My jailbroken iphone4 is amazingly fast, and does everything I want a phone to do! I couldn't be happier.

    • Iphonerulez says:

I also love bitesms but it's not playin nice with 4.3.2 coin to wait for an update :-(

  11. TK says:

He makes good points but jailbreaking just isn't for me. I rooted my old Droid and got bored with that fairly quickly, the extra customization is nice but I wouldn't use it.

  12. Shlov1 says:

Just installed black keyboard and it doesn't show up. Doesn't show up in winterboard either. How do I activate it?

  13. Abdul says:

White circle when screen is tapped. Anyone know the app for it?

  14. JohnC says:

Seriously, blur out Jay's phone number and such.

  15. SNG2HIM says:

After jail breaking, do you still back-up the device and sync thru iTunes? Does it still sync with google calendar and other apple devices?

    • LeBeef says:

Yes you still sync with iTunes and everything still works as normal. The only you should NOT do is update it when new updates come out until there is a jailbreak for that specific iOS update.

  16. BigJohn says:

LOL Just spoke to Jay Freeman about tuna sandwiches.

    great guy.

  17. Watcher says:

Thanks, Jay! YOU ARE AWESOME!!! YOU ROCK!!!

  18. ghostface147 says:

I guess the reason I don't jailbreak is because I am OCD about having the latest iOS updates and don't want to wait for the JB group to release a new hack for it. Even more so if I have to pay for those things like lockinfo and then can't use them because of my habit of updating firmware immediately.

I am curious how many people inside of Apple are closet jailbreakers....

    • Watcher says:

There are A LOT of Jailbreaking Apple employees. In fact, every time I go to a different Apple Store, usually one or two employees will admit to having their iPhones jailbroken as it's the only way to go! You won't know what you're missing out on until you try it! If I couldn't jailbreak my iPhone due to Apple preventing it in the future, I would definitely go over to Android. Jailbreaking is the only thing keeping me on the iPhone.

    • Nate says:

I know where you're coming from because I used to be the same way. Coming over to iOS from WebOS, I was totally OCD about updates. BUT, then I jailbroke my phone and it totally changed that mentality. I was so glad for the functionality that the jailbreak apps that added more functionality to my phone than any update could add. I also couldn't believe people were charging money for apps in Cydia, but it's really not that different than buying from the app store because you can actually re-download Cydia apps just as easily as you can reinstall in iTunes. Actually, it's easier because it's OTA. Hope this info helps. I just wanted you to hear from a fellow skeptic :)

  19. Wayne says:

Did he mention changing the passwords? I didn't watch the whole video. If you jailbreak, that's the first thing you need to do.

  20. Bill says:

I like this video featuring Mini Silent Bob and Lisa Loeb.

    Thumbs up!

  21. Frank72 says:

Did the settings upp freeze up on him at the beginning? Does not bode well for jailbreak IMO.

    • FLskydiver says:

That's what I was thinking too.

Only jailbreak hack that looked remotely interesting to me was SBSettings, which I figure will probably make its way to iOS at some point anyway.

Not demonstrated, but of interest to me, was Mywi - but since that seems to be a dodgy proposition these days I really see no reason to jailbreak here.

Especially when the guru of jailbreak apps can't even get a native iOS app to load correctly on his own phone.

  22. Will says:

I downloaded color keyboard and it works except for when my bitesms screen comes up. the regular white keyboard comes up, any ideas?

  23. Adam A says:

Hi guys, I have a quick question before I jailbreak. when I jailbreak my iPhone & sync through iTunes & I had newly downloaded apps through the official app store, if I did a restore to un jailbreak my iPhone from the last sync I know cydia will be gone but will my phone still have all the newly downloaded apps on there from the official app store? Thank you guys.

  24. Danny says:

Who's the bum off the streets in the interview?

  25. uberspeed says:

That I couldn't see the video on my iphone4 is getting increasingly annoying. Great industrial design, now let's bump the specs and address iOS shortcomings pronto please.

  26. Jared Williams says:

No, no, no! Why are we even talking about jailbreaking? There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to do that to the iPhone! Why can't you people understand that this device is supposed to be this way? Did it ever occur to you that there are very, very good reasons for your precious "functionality" not to be included yet? Don't you think the people at Apple (who are without a doubt smarter than the jailbreak community) have thought of all of this and have decided it was a better idea not to include it? This isn't some craptacular Android POS that needs mucking and muddling to make it work (and badly at that). This is the iPhone!

    • ClowningOnYou says:

LMAO.. I'm sorry but what you just said proved to me how many iPhone users cant think for themselves, and I'm sorry did you say that Apple is smarter then the "jailbreaking community" then how come they can't stop them from jailbreaking? Then you also attack at Android because they welcome the personal customization? YOU are the "typical" iPhone/Apple customer and it just makes me sick.

      • Sebastian Velez says:

I too used to think just like this guy b4 jailbreaking... I was against it to the bottom of my heart. No way would I ever think of doing that to my phone...

But after doing it once... It's as if I brought home a new iPhone... Or got a new major iOS software update... The transition was amazing! I've only been jail breaking since early February which barely makes it 2-3 months and I can already say I will never go back to iOS... Shoulda been doing this since original iPhone... I feel like I missed out on my childhood or something lol like I was deprived or something....

So just jailbreak it already and stop being biased.... If u tried it for a week like I did (because I too was very biased but I made a bet with a friend to keep it installed for a week... So if I found anything new that would keep me from dissing the Cydia store or the jailbreak altogether) u might find some gnarly stuff bro... It will b worth your time trust

    • jason w.s. says:

Man, oh man..its people like you that say that crap that actually makes me feel embarrassed to say i left Android for the iPhone. You are the picture perfect poster boy of a brainwashed isheeple that the guys over at droid-life are always laughing about. Close minded much?

  27. Rob says:

lol, in the beginning of the video, the "setting" never loads. That's happens when you jailbreak. Slows down the phone a bit. Yes, I am jailbroken cause I like to have my own text tones. But jailbreaking does create some small negative affect (and video proved it).

  28. want to jailbreak says:

Does anyone know if the glitch with the silent switch has been fixed? last time i jailbroke my iphone 4 (4.3.2) and wanted to put my phone on silent via the switch, it would give me the vibrate alert, as if it was non-jailbroken

  29. Joe says:

You people are silly..you're just installing software that Steve won't allow because he doesn't want apps to "play" with the built in OS apps..no harm will come to your device..Yes some people do it to install pirated appstore apps, but you're missing out on the iPhones true capabilities..Tethering, improved notifications from popups to status bar icons to a simple call blocker and that's only the tip of the iceberg. Personally I would have stuck with a droid if jailbreaking wasn't available..

  30. Michael says:

Does anyone know the name of the cover/skin that the woman has on her phone. it looks freaking sweet!

  31. Nate says:

What app was he using to email voicemails? That was cool and I've never seen that one.

  32. hollister beachboi says:

what is that app he is using to make that spin thing on his home screen

  33. Bo says:

What is the twitter app he pulls from the status bar?

  34. Bo says:

    His twitter app is qTweeter.

  35. iBlackdude says:

Saurik is a very nice guy. He reply to one of my email in 2008 when I started to jailbreak. Steve Job will never do that. He's a multi millionaire now. He needs to hire more people. Cydia is growing so fast. :)

  36. hooliganRugby says:

Anyone know the name of the app he uses at the very beginning to pull up 3G and Airplane mode?

  37. Andrew says:

    Video is down :(

  38. Bo says:

    hooligan ... it's SBSettings.

  39. Homer Simpson says:

"This video has been removed because its content violated YouTube's Terms of Service"

Translation: Since google owns youtube, they don't want to lose anymore current and future customers to Apple.

  40. Ali says:

The vid was removed from YouTube, any other links?

  41. Anas says:

Any other link for this video

  42. Hollister says:

What is the Name of the thing where he rolled the screen and the apps were in a circle. Help

  43. Paul O'Rama says:

I just jailbroke my new iphone 4 and my old 3GS using redsn0w. Battery life on my 4 has been fine, but is awful on my 3GS. Granted the battery on my 3GS is 2 years old with many charging cycles, but it's loses like 10% or more an hour... any tips for improving battery life on the 3GS?

    Thanks

  44. Jason says:

I think apple closely watches Cydia, and incorporates the best features into the iPhone, so essentially they have 1000s+ making ideas for Apple. I jailbroke my phone so I could get more functionality out of it. I like being able to quick switch the brightness, or turn airplane mode on quickly, or end all processes quickly..you know...things Android does! (because I'm on ATT and under contract, that's why :P )

  45. Dakota says:

Hey dude i was just wondering if there was anything in cydia that gets the music info and album artwork for the music on your ipod
