Photo shows Apple A5 SoC inside next iPhone?

Chinese networking site Weibo posted a photo showing the Apple A5 system-on-a-chip (SoC) used in the iPad 2 nestled into what appears to be a next generation iPhone logic board. The logic board is connected to a white iPhone 4-like front cover with a speaker mesh that looks slightly larger than that of the official white iPhone 4.

The image also shows a slightly larger battery running at 1430mAH compared to the current iPhone 4 battery running at 1420mAH despite both batteries carrying the same model number.

It's still up in the air as to whether Apple will release the iPhone 5 next to a cheaper iPhone 4S-style model, but the photo certainly suggests an expected specifications bump with an iPhone-4 like form factor.

As to this specific picture, some of the aspects of the image seem fishy to us. For example, the A5 logo stamped onto the chip itself looks rather suspect, so as always take this with a processor-sized grain of salt until we get the official word.

fake, that's a Palm treo 680 logic board photoshopped... =)

That's a copied white glass. Real Apple OEM has an infared filter on it for the proximity sensor.

  3. In previous years, Apple has kept the last-gen iPhone model unchanged and just dropped its price. But maybe this year Apple could upgrade the old design with the new processor and other tweaks and still drop the price. They could legitimately call the upgraded 4 the "4S," but because the engineering costs would be lower than the iPhone 5, they could still maintain high 4S margins at the reduced price.

But why would Apple do that? I can think of two reasons:

    1. Economy of scale: selling more A5s allows amortizing the design costs over a larger number of units (in iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 3, and probably Apple TV 3.) The result: lower cost per unit over the A5 production lifecycle.

    2. Power-hungry iOS 5 apps? It's no secret that Apple is working on their own mapping solution. It'll probably have an augmented reality option, so you can hold up your iPhone and see route info, store names, friend locations, etc. superimposed on the camera's image. That takes processor power (and RAM) and maybe iPhone 4's A4 can't smoothly handle it all.

So then why would anybody buy an iPhone 5 instead of an iPhone 4S for $100 less? The bigger screen alone might be worth it, if the rumors are true. And maybe there are some iPhone 5-only features that we don't know about yet (NFC point-of-sale purchases, concert ticketing, etc.)

  4. Just a thought about NFC and ticketing. Wouldn't it be great for Apple if they could build NFC ticketing into iPhone 4S / 5 in time for the 2012 Olympics? Wave your phone at the gates instead of fishing around for tickets and you're in.

If Apple waits until iPhone 6 to add NFC just before the Olympics (in late July), there wouldn't be big enough installed base. Apple needs to add NFC this year if they want to make a splash at the Olympics. Just sayin'.
