October 4 iPhone event to be held on Apple campus?

John Paczkowski of All Things D, who originally claimed his sources told him that Apple would be holding their next iPhone event on October 4, now also claims that said event will take place on Apple's own Cupertino campus.

Why? That’s not entirely clear. Perhaps the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), which has hosted a number of big product unveils in the past. Perhaps, the company felt a more intimate venue was best for newly installed CEO Tim Cook’s first media event. Perhaps YBCA was simply already booked. Whatever the reason, the world will get it’s first look at the next iPhone at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium in early October.

While Apple hasn't officially announced a date let along a place, Paczkowski sources are usually solid. My guess is that Apple will increasingly hold their events on their terms and on their turf. Just wait until they open their new spaceship headquarters in a few years...

I wonder what is the capacity of that auditorium..

  2. That's funny. I was wondering why they couldn't do the same thing after a comment on another thread by someone saying they haven't secured Moscone.

  3. Also, no spy phone shots the night before showing posters or anything else. Maintaining absolute secrecy about this product until the very end.

if its a small space to announce a product, my guess is that there isn't much to show off. We already know what iOS 5 can do. iCloud is...whatever (I still think that needs to be better explained). And probably nothing new in terms of hardware for a 15 month old device. How greatly disappointing after all this waiting.

Not to mention the fact that they dont want a bunch of people using the airwaves and not be able to show off the phone like with the i4 and facetime

I can see why they might want to do the announcement on the campus. First, it's just a phone release, not something larger like WWDC. So, the need for a massive venue may not exist. Second, cost. They already have space to do an announcement, so why spend the money on somebody else's space. Third, control. If you think about some of the announcements in the past, they have had issues with things like wifi and cell signals. If they are on the Apple campus, those things are completely under their control. And, if I am not mistaken, the carriers have installed cell towers directly on the campus for their use. Talk about being able to show off a new phone with 5 full bars of signal! And, finally, product control. The new phone never has to leave the campus and run the risk of being photographed by a non-Apple person right before the announcement. I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons, but those are a few that just popped into my head.
