Next generation iPhone to support 720p HD video recording?

The 4th generation iPhone looks like it will be able to do some high definition (HD) video recording according to the iPhone 4 Beta SDK. A little digging into the code reveals that there are two presets for recording resolution, the current 640x480 (VGA) and a 1280x720 (720p).

  • AVCaptureSessionPreset640x480
  • AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720

It is looking more and more like Rene will finally get his wish for an iPhone HD that he has been craving for the past two years. If you were on the fence about upgrading your iPhone does HD video recording sway you to make the purchase?

GrandmaBetty says:

I just wonder how fast it's gonna be.

rbiro says:

If they have 720P and have a lower end $200 price point, why would anybody willing to use AT&T ever buy a FlipHD?
It can't have worse indoor light sensitivity than the Flip.

GrandmaBetty says:

Probably cause you don't need a contract for a Flip.

OmariJames says:

hmm not if the camera makes my phone over heat 0_o

Freiteez says:

June can't come any quicker. This won't replace my Canok HV30 but taking HD video on the fly will be amazing

Hmacc says:

Macman, exacy why does 720p have to RUN BETTER than 30fps???
If you are asking for 720@60fps from an iPhone, your an idiot!

patcom8 says:

im gonna be all over this one like white on rice... haha... My 3G is not cutting it anymore and the next iphone update has been a long time coming for me.

MacMan says:

actually i meant at least 30 fps . thanks for the complement

jay0heavenly says:

Daniel A says:

iPhone HD or the Evo 4G with 4G, 4.3" display, 8MP/720p camera/video, kickstand and an HDMI out?

Daniel A says:

Evo 4G will also have Adobe Flash 10.1, and serve as a 4G/3G hotspot (extra charge) for 8 wifi devices... how can I pass that up for this new iPhone?!

Nickel says:

I know Daniel, it will be a tough choice! At least we'll have that choice to make. But I'm with you, 4G and hotspot ability just may sway me. Summer can't come soon enough.

Jo says:

Couldn't care less. I hardly ever used video recording or even video playback on any of my cellphones.

Ray says:

HTC Evo > Apple iPhone

Dexter says:

If they're going to put 720p recording on the iPhone then they better make one with a 100GB flash drive!

Darkstar says:

I record videos on my 3GS all the time, so upgrading to a new phone would make sense for me, especially if it record in 720p @ 30 frames per second. That would be a GREAT improvement!!!
I'm also looking forward to a front facing camera for web chat. It would be nice to have smooth video for Wifi, and maybe slower video for 3G, but I won't hold my breath.
I'd still like to have tethering available so I can use my laptop on a limited basis while I'm on the road, but I'm sure many of you would agree with me on that as well.
Overall, I'm just waiting for Apple's official announcement to make my final decision. I'm not losing sleep over it at all, and I'll probably upgrade anyway, even if all my wanted features arrent there, but I can still dream...

Tis says:

I don't think the apple a4 chip will be in the new Iphone. If the arm a8 is the base of the a4 it would be hard pressed to run multitasking and 720 video. The strain on the system would be hellish. I think they finally moved up to the a9 but still single core. The a9 can clock the same as the a8 but More threads run in parellel making it a much better multitasker for high CPU usage. As for video I'm in.

Jimmy says:

I have been waiting for this new iphone forever it feels like. I knew it was going to be sweet either way but from the sounds of it. it just keeps getting better. Does anyone know when in June the iphone will be released?

Kerri says:
