mophie announces the juice pack helium for iPhone 5

For those whose iPhone batteries lived -- or died -- on the extra power provided by a mophie juice pack case, good news -- mophie has just announced the juice pack helium. Why helium? Because it's lighter than air, as in the previous generation juice pack air, of course. It's a 1500mAh battery, which will replenish an iPhone 5 up to 80%, but it's packed in a case that's svelter than ever before.

Taking the Vader-black iPhone to full-on Blackout!

When Apple first showed off the new, unibody slate and black iPhone 5, I referred to it as Vader black. I liked the look so much, I escalated it by going retro-black with my Lock screen and Home screen wallpapers. Then, when AnoStyle was announced, I immediately wanted to take it one step further. I wanted the Blackout look you see on high-end watches and cars. Problem was, AnoStyle didn't offer black anodization. Not yet, at least...

So I bugged Ally and her Ano-Ninja accomplice, Rob, and volunteered to be test subject zero for their first-ever Blackout iPhone 5. And as you can see from the results above and below, they did not fail to delight.

More on a 5-inch iPhone and scaling the interface

Just over a week ago I ran the numbers on a bigger screen iPhone, and presented several ways Apple could go, including just taking the current screen and stretching it out to almost 5-inches, which would give it the same 264ppi pixel density as the Retina iPad 4 screen. Since Apple used the iPhone density to make the iPad mini, using the iPad density to make the iPhone maxi has a certain symmetry to it.

But would stretching out the icons, buttons, text and other interface elements just make them look bigger, or would it make them look silly? Let's find out...

Apple releases iOS 6.1 beta 5 for iPhone and iPad

Apple has released iOS 6.1 beta 5 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This comes just a day before beta 4 was set to expire, and represents one of the longest gaps between beta releases in iOS' history. Furthermore, beta 5 still hasn't shown up over-the-air (OTA), so rather than the faster, more convenient delta-update-in-place, if you want beta 5 now, now, now, you'll have to download it from developer.apple.com and do a complete update via iTunes or Xcode.

As always, this beta is intended for registered developers so they can try out new application program interfaces (API) and make sure their apps are compatible before iOS 6.1 goes into general availability (GA), presumably sometime in the next couple of months.

(If anyone gets the OTA, let us know. It's spoiled us and made us lazy!)
