The Verizon iPhone 5's SIM slot is unlocked, as it turns out

Some preliminary tests are showing that users can pop an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card into a Verizon-branded iPhone 5, and you can get HSPA+ service as normal (assuming, of course, the GSM SIM is active). This is great news for T-Mobile customers that worried about having to unlock the SIM slot on their shiny new iPhone 5, as well as frequent flyers that regularly swap out SIM cards for local service. You can always shave down your own nano SIM cards, though it's generally not recommended.

iPhone 5 photo gallery

The iPhone 5 isn't just one of the most advanced pieces of consumer electronics ever made, Apple has taken the design and manufacturing itself well beyond the next level. Measured now in microns, the precision is as impressive as it is ephemeral -- easily seen in the fit and finish of every part up close, but disappearing instantly when you start using it, when it just becomes the phone, internet communicator, or widescreen iPod in your hand.

So lets take a moment to appreciate the iPhone 5 as object, as a piece of industrial design, as the craftsman of Apple and Jonathan Ive and Bob Mansfield and their teams, as a thing of beauty.

AT&T clearly doesn't want to keep me as a customer

Until now, AT&T has always made exceptions for early iPhone adopters by qualifying these customers for full upgrade prices before their contract technically allowed it. I took advantage of this when upgrading from the iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS, from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4, and from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S. Not this year. Those glorious days are now over.

iPhone 5 using new Lightning dock connector

The iPhone 5 announced today at Apple's big event will include a new dock connector called Lightning. We saw it often enough in the pre-show leaks, and is now fully official. It includes a new all-digital 8-signal design, has an adaptive interface, improved durability, reversible (i.e. usable from both ends), and is 80% smaller than the old dock connector.

iPhone 5 battery life meets (and sometimes exceeds) iPhone 4S

Yet another tidbit about the iPhone 5 coming out of today's big Apple event is that the new LTE-enabled smartphone will match or even exceed the iPhone 4S battery life, despite being slimmer and running faster. Browsing and talking on cellular networks gives you 8 hours, while the iPhone 5 can handle 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or video, 40 hours of music, or 225 hours of standby. By comparison, the iPhone 4S is advertised as handling 8 hours of talk time, 200 hours standby, 6 hours of browsing on 3G, 9 hours on Wi-Fi, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music.

Familiar Apple apps ready for iPhone 5, third-party apps get black bars

Today at the iPhone 5 event, Apple was quick to show off that most of it's big-name applications are ready to roll on their new handset. Calendar, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto and many others are going to be fully-optimized for the new, longer display. Third-party apps that aren't updated will have to deal with black bars to fill the rest of the screen, though everything still works as before. CNN and OpenTable are some of the partners that have updated their format accordingly.

Unlock your out of contract AT&T iPhone with the new online unlock request form

AT&T has just launched a new webpage that allows you to request a SIM unlock for an out of contract iPhone. AT&T has always made it reasonably difficult to unlock a device on its network but now it seems to be softening its approach and actually trying to make it easier for iPhone users. The form is fairly simple to fill in and if you meet a few simple requirements you can have your iPhone unlocked in 5-7 days.
