Daily Tip: How to untethered jailbreak original iPad, iPhone 4, and older devices on iOS 5.0.1 with redsn0w 0.9.10b1

Heard about the untethered jailbreak for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models running iOS 5.0.1 and curious how to use it on your own device?. This jailbreak won't yet work with newer, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, but if you own anything earlier, you're in luck.

Supported devices

  • iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA)
  • iPod touch 4th generation
  • iPad (orignal model)
  • iPhone 3GS

What you need

  • A supported device - please note this will not work for iPhone 4S or iPad 2
  • A Mac or PC
  • redsn0w 0.9.10b1 - Mac, Windows

Untether via the Corona Cydia package

If you're already tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1, you can untether your jailbreak using the Corona package in Cydia.

Untether via redsn0w

If for some reason you'd prefer using redsn0w to untether, you may do so. Just run the version of redsn0w linked above over your existing jailbreak. When prompted what you want to do, just uncheck Install Cydia since you already have it installed. Let redsn0w do its thing and you should be untethered when it completes.

Jailbreak your device

If you're not jailbroken at all, perform the following steps -

  1. First Launch redsn0w
  2. This version and other newer versions of redsn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.
  3. Next redsn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn’t already, power your device off while it’s connected to the computer.
  4. Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and redsn0w will take care of the rest.
  5. After redsn0w finishes doing it’s thing, you’re done!

Common issues and how to solve them

Stuck on Apple logo or in recovery mode

Some users seem to be experiencing this issue. Performing a clean restore in iTunes and then attempting to jailbreak after a clean install should alleviate this issue.

redsn0w fails

First attempt to select a custom IPSW under Extras in redsn0w and navigate to the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW to see if this fixes the issue. If it still fails, try a clean restore in iTunes and then attempt to jailbreak again.

Anyone help out on some of those mirroring package names? I've hunted around but haven't seen or heard anything.

This was amazingly fast and is unthread :) and also another great thing about pod2g's jailbreak is that you dont need your version to put into redsnOw. It's as fast as greenposion. (Nice how-to) tiPb!)

Is there a trick to updating a jailbroken iPad on 4.3.3 to 5.0.1? Keep getting an error "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

hey I did the jailbreak on my iphone4, and it all worked perfectly, but now everything I try to install from sbsettings to intelliscreenX (which i paid for) says "cannot comply" after I click "install"! does anyone know why this is or how to fix it?

so I found a work around, I tried to install "serious SbSettings HD", and after a crash or 2, it finally installed fully, and installed the regular SbSettings, and then the intelliscreenX installed right after! hope this helps!

Can i also tick multitasking gestures in the redsnow dialog box where i tick install cydia.
I've tried just installing cydia and the multitasking gestures disappeared even though i had them on my ipad 5.0.1.

I want to move back to tethered because iBooks doesn't work. Can I just uninstall the Corona package and run the old redsn0w?

Umm... where do I uncheck "install cydia"? I only got "Jailbreak and install cydia" and "extras", not finding that option anywhere!!

wow yet another attempt at fooling people into this weak unreliable jailbreak!!! come on get with it and stop releasing junk

Yeah Redsn0w sucks they can't even get iBooks working right for months wtf people stick with the Ac1dsn0w one

Can this be used to downgrade to iOS 4.x on an iPod Touch 4g? I don't have any blobs saved because I got mine from Craigslist and hate iOS 5.0.1......

Multi guestures doesn't work on iPad any more even it exists with 5.0.1
iBooks doesn't work !!!

Yo guys to fix iBooks just Boot tethered over the untether. It will not do anything to the untether (if phone dies will reboot fine and work) and iBooks will work until the next reboot.
Those guys really need to fix it permanently tho.

Open the Cydia app on your tethered jailbroken device**
Search for “Corona”
Hit the “Install” button (as shown in the screen grab below)

I did this on my iPhone 4, and in Cydia I only get a few packages, and I can't even get Dreamboard. What did I do wrong?

what did you do get the other packages because i cant open anything. cant even find the spire program either

i cant install anything, it says i need to install more sources,i even tried to refresh under "changes" & still didn't do anything :\

Ya. Doesn't work. After going through the initial mess of having to restore the first time around, the Cydia that was installed is just a blank, white box that fails to open. Rad.

Hi,
Just Jailboken for the first time (ever), but I cannot get any apps loaded through Cydia. I get the following error:
sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
There's a couple of tips to solve this on the web, involviing removing Ivy & faulty apps... but I don't have either!
Only Cydia, with no apps, loaded with Redsn0w 0.9.103b
Any suggestions?

I have 3gs and updated to 5.0.1 before I jailbreaked. the untettered worked and cydia installed with apps. it has BB of 6.15.05 but it will not work on t-mobile sim card so i assumed it is not unlocked. Is it because of my bb?...thanks any advice??

I jaibreaked my iphone 4 last night using redsnow (latest version). It worked great without any issues. Now I'm free...
Can anyone recommend a tool/site that shows how to effectively unlock my iphone 4 now?

if i do the jailbreak does all my information (contacts, pictures, videos, etc.) get deleted?

No it will not. I had the same concern when I jailbroke my iPod 4g running on ios 5.0.1 and it did not erase all my information. I have not had any big probems with the iOS jailbreak. The only thing that has concerned me this far, is where you will now be running on iPhone iOS 5.0.1, your battery will run down faster than usal. Just keep your screen brightness on low and keep your wifi turned off when not using it.
Hope This Helps!(:

What is up with the basebnd 4.11.08 I have tried everything and can't get pass it , i Have been trying to unlock my old I phone 4, for my sis that uses T-mobile and have not had any luck, I install Cydia and run everything but i still can't get another sim to work on it, how do you get pass baseband 4.11.08
