5 Tiny Tweaks Apple Could Make to Improve the iPhone BEFORE 3.0

No, we're not talking cut/copy and paste, nor MMS, video recording, or any other of the slew of major feature omissions tech pundits can't go an article without kicking, dead-horse-like. (There must be songs and drinking games about them -- enough already!) We're talking the minor stuff, the small things, the tiny little tweaks Apple could roll out in a 2.2.2 or 2.3 OS update that would make our iPhone experience just that much better and more enjoyable on a day-to-day basis.

Apple has done it before, of course. Double-space to add a period. Double-tap Home to get to favorite phone numbers or the iPod app. Tap Home to slide back to the first/primary/main App screen. Having Apps update in-place rather than shoving them back to the first empty slot.

And they could do it again, perhaps even with minimal effort, and sooner rather than later.

iPhone OS 3.0 will be previewed next tuesday, March 17, but likely won't be delivered to users until June or July. Here's what we'd like to see from Apple in the meantime, after the break...

Around SPE for 15 March, 2009

2

Around SPE for 15 March, 2009

Welcome to Around SPE, where we highlight the big news of the week from around the network in a format that's more than just a list-o-bullets. This week we're putting the spotlight on Android Central, which saw a fairly hefty redesign on Wednesday night. Search, registration, commenting, navigation, the whole shootin' match is all much improved.

We're also proud to announce that Android Central made a donation to Olin College to help students there develop mobile applications (with a special focus on Android, naturally). You can find out more information about the class here, or better yet -- go check out the applications already in development this early in the semester!

In Android news, we caught word that Amazon was selling the Black G1 for a measly $97.99. Then it got even better with Costco offering the G1 for $79.99, a whole $100 off! Why the discounts? Recession? Pressure from the HTC Magic? Finally, the long awaited Cupcake update is supposed to come to Android by April. Paid apps came to the UK Android Market. And we wondered whether the T-Mobile G2 (aka HTC Magic) was going to show up at CTIA.

Now for the roundup of the week's news from our other SPE sites!

iPhone at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2009 Roundup

South by Southwest (SXSW) 2009 is trendy, twitter-filling, and the source of increasingly social iPhone news releases. What's going on this year?

FaceBook connect comes to the iPhone. Sure, they may just have redesigned their home pages to basically become Twitter with invitations to apps you don't want and events on continents you can't attend, but behind the scenes:

TiPb Giveaway: twitkitteh for iPhone

We can't tell if twittkitteh (iTunes Link) is shrewd marketing or wicked satire at the state of the App Store and Twitter. We suspect it's equal parts both, finished with a good shot of lulz.

Says developer James Thomson:

Twitkitteh is, quite simply, the first Twitter application written specifically for cats.

For many years, cats have been unfairly excluded from this social networking phenomenon, but we at TLA Systems believe it is finally time to change that.

Premium App Store Plus! iPhone 3.0 Rumors Recycled!

Our guess is that the buildup to this Tuesday's iPhone OS 3.0 Preview will be filled with rumors, new and old. Speaking of old, Wired has just dusted off the Premium App Store (or App Store Plus) story from back in January. While that story focused on Premium Games, and Wired re-enforces that focus, they all suggest there could be a wider range of content:

Forum Review: iProRecorder for iPhone

[Ed: iProRecorder is Currently on sale for $1.99 in the iTunes App Store - Rene]

iProRecorder Forum Review by cjvitek For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum Review Index!

Recorder apps are a popular sub-group of apps, and each of them seems to offer a slight variation on the same overall theme. Depending on what you are looking for in a recording apps (ease of use, a large number of features, online synching, etc) different recording apps are going to be good or bad. iProRecorder is an app the focuses more on features that speed of use, but the features is has are quite nice.

iPhone SDK Beta/iTunes Connect Contracts Extended to July 11

iPhone SDK Beta/iTunes Connect Contracts Extended to July 11

The Situation: Developers who signed up for Apple's iPhone SDK Beta and iTunes Connect program last year are coming up on their 1 year renewal deadline.

The Problem: Apple has no mechanism in place to handle such renewals.

The solution: Er... there is none -- yet. But in the meantime, Ars Technica's Erica Sadun reports:

Apple has now e-mailed iPhone developers to extend their memberships until July 11, 2009. A short-term solution to the problem is good, but it shows that Apple is still working out the longer-term details.

Cramer on Stewart: Was Important to Say AT&T and Verizon Disliked iPhone, Wouldn't be Ready for Macworld

Cramer on Stewart: Was Important to Say AT&T and Verizon Disliked iPhone, Wouldn't be Ready for Macworld

In one of the most remarkable inside-media interviews in recent memory, CNBC's Jim Cramer sat down with the Daily Show's Jon Stewart, and was made manifest for his network and industry's failures (according to Stewart) to properly fulfill their mandate as the 5th estate and pillar of democratic systems, and expose for their audiences the lies and deceptions that those in positions of power would perpetrate on them (and us).

What does this have to do with Apple and the iPhone, however? In one of the clips shown from 2006, Cramer specifically mentions how it is "very important" to "spread the rumor" that both AT&T and Verizon don't like the iPhone, and that it wouldn't be ready by Macworld.
