National Transportation Safety Board calls for U.S. ban on distracted driving

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB, is advocating the elimination of distractions while in a transportation vehicle. Citing disasters, sometimes fatal, that could have been avoided if the operator of their transport vehicle, whether that's a car, boat, plane, or train, was focused on the task at hand rather than distractions caused by the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) in the cabin, the NTSB is calling for a nationwide ban on the use of non-essential electronic devices while driving.

App design walks the line between art and fashion, not unlike pop music

One year rich, skeuomorphic textures are all the rage, the next, flat designs and naked buttons. So are apps art or are they fashion? Are the made to stand the test of time to keep time with the latest trends? Or, like pop music, could they be both? My friend and frequent collaborator, Dave Wiskus has begun a new video series examining design and what it means in our daily lives.

The first episode, Rock Stars, is above and if you like it, you can subscribe to the rest via Better Elevation and check out his Patreon options.

How to disable automatic downloads on iPhone and iPad

By default your iPhone or iPad can automatically download App Store apps and music that you purchase either within iTunes on your computer, or on another iOS device. That means download an app on your iPad, and it's instantly on your iPhone as well. While some people like this convenience, others may not appreciate it, especially if storage space is an issue on certain devices. Luckily you can disable it in just a few taps.

Apple announces record-breaking 4 million iPhones pre-ordered in just 24 hours

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have set a new record for Apple pre-orders with more than four million advance orders for the new iPhones logged in the first 24 hours of availability. That smashes the previous pre-order record for iPhones, set two years ago by the iPhone 5 with 2 million pre-orders. The pent-up demand for the larger-screened iPhones seems to finally be spilling out, so much so that shipping times for many iPhone 6 models have slipped to a week or more, and all iPhone 6 Plus models have been pushed back to October for any new orders.

Samsung continues to devote an embarrassingly large amount of their advertising not to their own products but to Apple's. In Samsung's latest ad, they pretty much admit they were the manufacturing equivalent of the stereotypical "FIRST!" message board commenter, releasing the super-sized Galaxy Note phablet before they, it, and the market were ready. They then make fun of their own product, highlighting quips like "you look like you're talking into a piece of toast", and "the note is an unwieldy beast", before diving head-first into the notion that Apple is imitating them by releasing the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. So what's really going on here?
