Attack of the iClones: It's a Small BlackBerry App World After All!

Attack of the iClones: It's a Small BlackBerry App World After All!

CrackBerry.com is reporting that BlackBerry maker RIM has finally settled on a name for their version of the App Store: App World.

See, it's not a place to buy applications, it's a planetary system where apps spawn and live SIM lives, and... argh. Who knows?

RIM is expected to spin it 'round their sun some time tonight. Given that BlackBerry's can only store applications on the tiny sliver of internal RAM left after the OS and filesystem have taken their share (estimated to be 50-100 megs as opposed to 7-15GB on the iPhone), it's likely to be a small, small App World after all.

Verizon Asking Former Customers if They Would Have Stayed for iPhone?

Verizon Asking Former Customers if They Would Have Stayed for iPhone?

Ouch. Don't know what else to say. Verizon told Apple they didn't want the iPhone so Apple went to AT&T (and the mostly GSM world still thanks Jobs for that). To make up for it, Verizon -- almost 2 years later -- rushed the BlackBerry Storm to market. Still, during the iPhone 3G's second quarter, it outsold the BlackBerry Storm in the US by almost 2 to 1 (1.9 million activations on AT&T vs. 1 million in sales on Verizon).

xGPS 1.2 For Jailbroken iPhones Now Available

A few weeks back we introduced you to a little Jailbreak app called xGPS. This is the first app available to bring turn-by-turn directions to your iPhone. It has just been updated to version 1.2 and seems to be much more polished overall. The biggest improvement is this version is of course, voice instructions support. To those of you who have not interested in Jailbreaking, are you tempted now?

Hockenberry on App Store, Being "Trendy", and Why NOT to Delay for Extra Features

Hockenberry on App Store, Being "Trendy", and Why NOT to Delay for Extra Features

As many of us eagerly wait for Twitterrific 2.0 to hit the iTunes App Store, developer Craig Hockenberry has provided an interesting insight into the mind -- and strategy -- behind one of the most high-profile development houses in Apple-dom. Says Hockenberry on being Trendy:

As software developers we often fall into the “just one more feature” trap. We want a 1.0 release to be awesome, and that one more thing will only take a day or two, and people will love it, so why not?

Kindle for iPhone Gallery

Kindle for iPhone Gallery

Yes, folks, I was one of the suckers eager buyers of the 2nd edition of the Kindle. My pain is your pleasure, though, as you can get some early screenshots of the app already loaded up with books via Whispersync.

As you may have just read in our previous post, Amazon has just released Kindle for iPhone for free in the App Store (iTunes link), you cannot buy Kindle books directly from the app. Instead you can purchase inside Mobile Safari, from your desktop, or from a Kindle

The text is nice and readable (and you can resize as well). The app keeps a "page metaphor," meaning that instead of being able to scroll up and down, you swipe left and right to switch pages. A single tap on the screen bring up a menu to give you back, bookmark, text-size, and a sync button to sync your last page read with a Kindle.

The Whispersync tech works exactly as advertised -- books purchased show up as "Archived" and you can then download them directly to your iPhone.

Head on in after the break for your screenshots!

Amazon Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch Now in the iTunes App Store

Amazon Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch Now in the iTunes App Store

Amazon's Kindle App for iPhone and iPod touch is now live in the App Store. It allows access to hundreds of thousands of Amazon Kindle format e-books (we assume the whole 200K plus library).

The Amazon Kindle for iPhone app is FREE (iTunes Link), but it looks like books need to be purchased from Amazon directly via PC or Mac and transferred over, or from the iPhone via Mobile Safari. Most e-books should run $9.99. Like with the Kindle device itself, you can sample first chapters for free, adjust text size and bookmark. You can't annotate but you can view Kindle annotations.

Could an Apple iTablet be a Kindle e-Book and e-Comic Killer?

Could an Apple iTablet be a Kindle e-Book and e-Comic Killer?

Yeah, let the speculation continue! No sooner did we blog about Apple's rumored March 24th Special Event being an iPhone 3.0 or even iTablet into, then we came across this wonderful article up at Newsarama.com featuring uber-Apple tech journo, Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun-Times. Most tantalizingly:

Speculation Alert: Does This Mean March 24 Will be iPhone 3.0 Beta? iTablet? What?!

Today Apple dropped new Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro desktops, and Airport Extreme, and Time Capsule routers. Previously, we'd heard rumors about Apple waiting and holding one of their Special Events on March 24th, a "Spotlight Turns to Desktops" to bookend last fall's "Spotlight Turns to Laptops" event. But none of today's releases were as new or event-worthy as the unibody MacBooks announced last year, were they?

UPDATED: New Apple Airport Extreme and Time Capsule Feature Dual-Band for Better iPhone Friendliness (and MobileMe Access!)

UPDATE: MacRumors also found remote file access for MobileMe users:

Access files on a networked drive from anywhere - Allows MobileMe subscribers to register their AirPort Express Base Station or Time Capsule with their MobileMe account, providing them access to their files from anywhere via the Internet. Drives will appear in the Finder sidebar like any other attached drive, acting just like a personal file server with remote access.

Apple Intros New Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro, Airport Extreme, and Time Capsule

Apple Intros New Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro, Airport Extreme, and Time Capsule

Mac Mini, iMac? Check. Check. Mac Pro. Check. Airport Extreme. Check. Time Capsule. Check. Yep, that's the rumor list Apple just plowed through one after the other, with nary anything resembling a "Spotlight on Desktops" Event in sight.

Nary anything, aside from the friendliness of the new routers, approaching iPhone updates either -- though we imagine new developers eyeing Macs to get into iPhone App-making with have their hands, and charge cards, full today.

You getting anything?

Apple Store Down!

4

Apple Store Down!

We repeat, this is not a drill! The Apple Store is Down! Reports are flooding in from all over the intertubes... Details are sketchy but could this be the Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro update to bring in Nvidia chipsets and Nehalem cores? What about a new 30" LED Display? How about those iPhone friendlier Airport Extreme and Time Capsule base stations we just heard about? And what does this mean for that Apple Special event we heard rumored for March 24? Almost certainly no new iPhones yet, but last March was the iPhone SDK Road Map event...

Apple Readying New, iPhone-Friendlier Airport Extremes and Time Capsules?

9

Apple Readying New, iPhone-Friendlier Airport Extremes and Time Capsules?

Since all current and previous iPhone (and iPod touch) devices have 802.11b/g WiFi, if placed on a faster, wider-range 802.11n network, they typically cause such networks to downgrade to 802.11b/g speeds for compatibility. This means your hyper-fast router will slow down your iMac or MacBook whenever your iPhone hits the network...

...But maybe not for much longer?
