iPhone 4 Review

Full review of iPhone 4: Apple's attempt to re-revolutionize the iPhone

Reviewing iPhone 4 is a challenge. It has been hailed by Apple as the greatest leap forward since the original iPhone 2G and dismissed by critics as just another iterative rehash. iPhone 4 has a new look. Polished stainless steel bound by sleekly laminated layers of glass, it harkens back to the heydays of Leica and Braun and might just be the iPhone Apple has always dreamed of making. Yet having glass front and back and the antenna array banded along the side could end up being as much functional loss as it is form win.

iPhone 4 also ships with Apple's latest software, iOS 4. It brings features such as multitasking and folders, unified inbox and threaded email, and FaceTime video calling. Each of these come with limitations however, that while making them nearly effortless for new users to pick up, ensure power users will retain a level of frustration with the platform.

Like every one of Apple's iOS products before it, iPhone 4 is going to be as divisive and controversial as it is popular and passionately embraced. Some of you will be looking at it, iPhone 3GS, 3G, or even 2G still in hand, wondering if its worth the upgrade. Others may be looking across from Android or BlackBerry, webOS or Windows Phones, trying to figure out if its finally time to make the switch (or come back).

So is it? Read on as TiPb goes hands-on with Apple's latest hardware and software to help you decide.

Update: The Verizon iPhone 4 has finally shipped and there are some differences and new options. Check out our full Verizon iPhone Review for all the details!

Official: not posting any more zany ways people are destroying iPhone 4

I woke up this morning to find several more emails from people who wanted us to post the looney-toons-esque ways they'd found to destroy an iPhone 4 over the weekend.

And strangely I my interest level in them floated precisely around zero.

If you have a spare iPhone 4 give it to charity. Or an Android user. Something. Just stop wasting them -- i.e. writing them off as marketing investments leveraged against their return value as link-bait -- because I'm not posting them any more.

Tap Tap Radiation for iPad - app review

Tap Tap Radiation for iPad - app review

YouTube link

If you love Tapulous' Tap Tap Revenge on the iPhone then it's newer, bigger brother for the iPad, Tap Tap Radiation is something you're going to want to check out. The core idea is the same -- you listen to your favourite tunes, Tap Tap Radiation visualizes them as shiny colored circles racing towards you, and then it is up to your fingers to tap along with the beat.

Tap Tap Radiation gives you 30 free tracks to choose from. Some of the free tracks you are by Serge Devant, Richard VIsson, Mos Def and premium tracks (paid) include songs by Lady Gaga and Pink. The themes, graphics and effects do a good job showing off the iPad's larger screen and graphics power.

Tap Tap Radiation is the app to get for anyone who owns a iPad and enjoys playing games and listening to music. It's easy to pick up, relaxing and fun to play, and has three difficulty levels to help keep it challenging.

Tap Tap Radiation Free [iTunes Link].

Steve Jobs: There is no iPhone 4 reception issue

A new email, allegedly from Steve Jobs about the iPhone 4 antenna band problems -- where touching the stainless steel on the lower left side causes the signal to drop or go away completely -- seems to a offer a response either curtly dismissive or perhaps... encouraging?

rfbandit/Mark wrote:

I love everything about the phone except my signal issues

Steve Jobs supposedly replied:

There are no reception issues. Stay Tuned.

Does iPhone 4 support the iPad camera kit?

Does iPhone 4 support the iPad camera kit?

Does iPhone 4 support the iPad camera kit? Turns out no, at least not under iOS 4. I plugged mine in and immediately got the error you see above. Since I've gotten compatibility errors using other accessories in the past that turned out to work just find if I ignored said errors, I plugged in a camera to see if anything magical would happen.

It didn't.

iTunes 9.2 beta expiring June 30

Just a quick reminder to developers that the iTunes 9.2 beta released back at WWDC 2010 expires on June 30 (just over 4 days from now, Cupertino time).

So, if you haven't gotten around to updating with the general availability version released week before last -- it's expiring on June 30.

So go update.

[Thanks for the tip, anon!]

How's iOS 4 ActiveSync (Exchange/Google Sync) working for you?

How's iOS 4 ActiveSync (Exchange/Google Sync) working for you?

So how's iOS 4 Active Sync working for you? iOS 4 allows multiple ActiveSync accounts, meaning iPhone users can finally have their work Exchange setup alongside Google Sync, for example.

I've got both Exchange (2003) and Google Sync (Google Accounts) set up on both an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS, and both mail and calendar are working fine (I don't sync Exchange contacts, never mind the mess that is Google contacts -- I use MobileMe for that).

Some users over on the Apple Support forums aren't having as much luck. Calendars in particular seem to be giving them problems where they weren't under iOS 3.x.

I did notice that, on my iPhone 3GS, the first time I added the second ActiveSync account the phone got hot and the battery started to drain so I deleted it, rebooted, and added it back and it hasn't happened again -- battery life has been surprisingly good.

What's your experience with ActiveSync under iOS 4?

$99 iPhone 3GS - Apple's other huge smartphone launch

$99 iPhone 3GS - Apple's other huge smartphone launch

Though it got completely buried under the hype and hysteria of the iPhone 4 launch, Apple also released another "new" smartphone last week -- the $99 iPhone 3GS 8GB running iOS 4.

Sure it's "last year's model" in many ways, but a week ago it was still the best iPhone on the planet, holding up extremely well to much newer devices running other operating systems on other carriers. Now it packs iOS 4 punch with multitasking, folders, unified and threaded email, and all the other bells and whistles, and it's $99.

It makes absolutely no sense when you consider the costs of the accompanying voice and data plans under a 2-year contract run into the thousands of dollars, but getting below the magical $99 price point smashes a huge psychological barrier.

How to tether your iPad to your BlackBerry

How to tether your iPad to your BlackBerry

Have a BlackBerry and an iPad and want to tether? Bla1ze over at CrackBerry.com found himself in just that situation, and so he put together a quick how-to:

The process requires you to download a cydia app called iBluever and a BlackBerry application called PDANet. After a few setting adjustments you technically should be up and running using your BlackBerry data plan with your WiFi enabled iPad. That said, you should keep in mind that anytime something is interacting with your carrier data, you could incur extra charges. if you decide to set this up, you do so at your own risk.
