I do enjoy the manner in which you have framed this specific difficulty and it does present me some fodder for thought. Nevertheless, because of just what I have experienced, I just simply hope as other comments stack on that individuals stay on issue and don't embark on a tirade of the news of the day. All the same, thank you for this exceptional point and although I can not necessarily go along with the idea in totality, I respect the point of view.

You don't buy it FOR the iPod, it's a nice perk to the consumer and clears out some of Apple's iPod stock because they will refresh the iPod line in the fall. Speaking of PC reliability, I was at a graduation ceremony today and in the middle of a powerpoint an error came up and the whole system went down. PC is there for you in the clutch for sure!

@Al Yeah it is about software. That is why PCs have the largest and most diverse collection of applications and games. And Windows 7, Microsoft's new OS, is superior to OSX: more secure, more stable, runs better on older hardware.

Also the Iphone is no where near the best phone. It is a horrible business device. Sell figures would show you that Blackberries are more than likely the top sellers.

@Ray Only 4 year olds need their hand held while they are using an operating system. Apple forces you to work in their ecosystem and if you don't like it tough luck. ITunes blows by the way.

@iSkythe Please don't act like OSX doesn't lock up because it does. Sorry about your bad experiences with Windows. Either you never had adequate hardware or you had a hard time trying to discern how the start menu worked.

Getting a Mac to get a Free Itouch is like buying a Mercedes to get a Blu-ray player. It's just stupid.

Since I converted to Mac three years ago the one thing I do not miss at all is the obligatory reinstallation of Windows every six months. This is necessary to maintain sanity and not tear out your hair while waiting for your PC to boot up or load Office or something mundane like that. Don't be fooled by anyone talking specs or prices, it's the software PERIOD.

I've been using a PC my entire life......and I am SICK of them. They crash, freeze, and it takes forever and a day to even USE it after it boots up. I'll be enjoying my Mac and $230 from eBay in about a week. I'm 13, and I'm a Mac.

Someone's a PC and is 4 years old. Anyways, last year when Apple had this deal they asked for my school ID when I got my Macbook, at the Apple Store in Costa Mesa, CA. And if anyone goes out and gets a Macbook you might be able to get a free printer too, rebate also; they were doing this last year.

You can talk specs all day, it's the software! My MacBook is almost three years old now and still as fast as when I got it. I've never had a pc that can say the same after six months! The iPhone isn't the best phone in the world due to hardware specs (in fact they are quite modest), it's all in the powerful yet intuitive software. Same goes for Mac computers. The fact that there are still pc users that have tried a Mac computer even once boggles my mind.

I can find a higher spec'ed, quality laptop for under $700, install Windows 7, and walk away with a Zune 80 or an Itouch all for under $1000. It's no wonder only 8% of buyers get a Mac. All you're paying for is brand and an overpriced OS.

@ Truth - Unfortunately with your plan to end up with two POS devices. Under the Apple plan, you end up with a computer that will last you forever running the best OS ever devised and an industry leading Music/Internet/Email/Gaming device. Or, as I have used it before, it simply becomes a discount on your computer because you can send in the rebate AND sell the iPod new-in-box on eBay. Also, I can confirm that the Apple education store online requires zero proof and you can buy products from any university's education store. Unfortunately though (at least for the school I just graduated from) they no longer offer cheaper iPods even on the education store. I imagine that since the discount was so good they had lots and lots of non-students buying OR lots and lots of people buying them to resell them and pocket the extra $50.

Just a heads-up (and I apologize if I'm repeating someone here; I didn't read all the comments) but the promo is also good for staff and faculty members of a school. I'm a full time employee at a university here in Chicago, and literally 2 hours ago walked out of an Apple store with my new Macbook and free iTouch!

AzMerf, you need to show zero proof. In the online store there is a link at the bottom to the educational discount store. When you click that it brings up options. You select student and it asks you to pick your school from a list. After that it takes you right to the store; no codes, no proof, no confirmation. Unless it has changed since last year, I graducated in 2007 and last year still was using my school discount.

In reality, this promotion and educational discounts (which go on 365 days of the year) is open to everyone. They used to even give discounts directly on iPods, which is where I always told everyone to buy since they were $50 off.

Well, I'm not sure how I can follow that ludicrous story written above, but I was merely going to say that I just bought an MBP, which sucks because I could have gotten an iPod Touch (which would have been sold on eBay). If anyone can make any sense of that story above my post though let me know because all that stuff about the whale and going to a hotel, he lost me there.

Couldn't you just get the iPod touch then while still in original package and return it to the apple store for full credit and get an iPhone. This is exactly how I got my iPhone. My mom went to Bilouxi along with a big gambler aka whale. Her and her friend got a room comped because of the whale. When the whale came to meet them fir dinner he didn't like the room so he complained. To alleviate the situation the hotel sent up an iPod touch 8 gb. When she returned home I got the iPod touch returned it to the apple store and got an iPhone 16 gb for the restocking fee. Which I only had to pay because I opened the iPod touch.
