If you're running a modern laptop like one of Apple's latest MacBook Pro models, chances are there are times when you need to plug something in that your limited USB-C ports just don't allow for. Instead of daisy-chaining dongles and adapters as a solution, it's worth investing in something a little more elegant like Elgato's Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Right now, it is down to $209.95 at Amazon which is the lowest price we've ever seen for it there. It's been selling for around $250 of late, though you only have to track back a few months to see prices as high as $300.

This device features a bunch of helpful ports that your computer is probably lacking. Those I/O options include two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports with 5K display support, three USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and more.

The Thunderbolt 3 Dock is not a portable piece of kit by any means (Elgato has a Mini version for that). It's designed to be used at a desk as I/O expansion for a docked laptop or your desktop machine. It plugs into a single Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer and turns it into two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, three USB 3.0 ports, a DisplayPort, as well as Gigabit Ethernet. It also has inputs for your headphones and a mic. It has its own power supply meaning it can even charge up your laptop while it's connected.

It's a great pickup if you want to run an external of your MacBook as it support displays up to 5K in resolution or dual 4K displays. It's also handy if you just want to bring your ports from the back of your iMac to the front for easier access. If the Thunderbolt 3 Dock's ports aren't quite enough for you, there is a Pro version with additional microSD and SD card slots, and more USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports. It is a tad more expensive, though.

At iMore, we're big fans of this Elgato dock, even including it on our list of the best USB-C hubs for MacBook Pro. That list is certainly worth checking out if the Elgato devices aren't right for you.
