Bill Palmer over at iProng wrote a great article regarding this:
"How much did this catch me off guard? A couple weeks ago I was looking over the Macworld Expo website and I realized that there was no mention of Steve Jobs giving the keynote address. I mentioned it privately to a few friends in the industry, and while they were surprised by it, none of them thought that it could possibly translate to Steve not giving the keynote this year. And I found that I had to agree with them. In fact the idea seemed so absurd, so National Enquirer-style left-field out-there, that when I interviewed Macworld Expo’s Paul Kent last week I didn’t even bother to ask him about the keynote."

"John Gruber at Daring Fireball brings back a post from the archives after Apple cancelled [sic] its participation in Macworld Boston/New York: “So, to sum it up, the twice-yearly Expos (1) cost Apple millions of dollars; (2) put a lot of pressure on the company to make major product announcements on the Expos’ schedule, not when the products are actually ready; (3) are not under Apple’s direct control.”

There's all the reason they need to not participate as fully. Apple has brand loyalty by now and a lotta people on their jock. Hence, all these blogs, just for the iPhone (among other things).
Now they get to make their announcement on their own schedules when things are actually closer to being ready.

Not a move that will really crush them. Maybe the expo eventually, but come on...this is an Apple/Mac convention...really?
