TiPb TV 12: Should you get the Verizon iPhone?

Yes unicorns and the color white are still mythical but now at last the Verizon iPhone is real -- so should you get it? There are a lot of factors to way including network, new iPhone models, and costs, and all of that is the topic for this episode of our video show, TiPb TV!

We're getting a lot of questions from Verizon feature phone users considering getting their first iPhone, Droid or BlackBerry users thinking about joining the light side, and AT&T iPhone users just bursting to make the switch. AT&T or Verizon, which should you choose? Do you need simultaneous voice and data and international roaming or is reliability and US coverage more important to you? Are you still on a contract and are you willing to pay the early termination fee? Can Verizon really handle the iPhone? And once you decide would you be better off waiting for Apple to release an iPhone 5 this June?

Rene and I go over the options and help you decide. So hit the video above and watch along, then tell us what you choose to do in the comments!

iPad 2 screen and a vibrating motor listed on parts suppliers website

Parts supplier Global Direct Parts has listings on its site for a replacement LCD screen for the iPad 2 and a vibrating motor. There is not much information on either item however the price of the LCD panel is rather interesting. The iPad 2 LCD is listed at a price of $218.19. Rupert Murdoch's iPad-only newspaper The Daily delayed.

Rupert Murdoch's iPad-only newspaper The Daily delayed.

News Corp.'s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, has reportedly been delayed. The Daily is digital, iPad-only newspaper from Rupert Murdoch, which downloads a new edition every morning, like a regular newspaper. Recent rumours had said that 'The Daily' would be revealed on January 19th at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art with both Murdoch and Steve Jobs in attendance, however, new sources state that both Apple and News Corp. have made the decision to delay the launch by "weeks, not months".

The problem lies within Apple's new subscription service, which uses iTunes to bill subscribers on a weekly or monthly basis, and sync the new edition everyday.

So iPad 2 will have a 2048x1536 Retina Display?

So iPad 2 will have a 2048x1536 Retina Display?

Looks like iBooks 1.1 includes references to x2 iPad graphics, shorthand for Retina Display graphics that would peg iPad 2's screen at technology-bending 2048x1536. That's precisely double the current iPad's 1024x768 in both dimensions, and precisely what Apple did with iPhone 4 last year. (Doubling the pixels is the easiest way to keep existing apps functional and prevent fragmentation and mass developer angst.)

Regarding an Apple A5 chipset for iPhone 5, iPad 2

Regarding an Apple A5 chipset for iPhone 5, iPad 2

Last year Apple introduced their own 1Ghz Apple A4 system-on-chip (SoC) alongside the iPad and if recent rumors are to be believed we might just see the next generation -- perhaps called Apple A5 -- this year alongside iPad 2.

While Apple has never released the component specs for the Apple A4, it's accepted as being an Apple designed, Samsung fabricated ARM Cortex A8 CPU with Imagination PowerVR SGX GPU. That combination was fast on the iPhone 3GS and it was even faster, thanks in part to Intrisity's clock-speed know how, on iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and Apple TV (2010). So what would an Apple A5 look like?

iPad 2, iPhone 5, Apple TV (2011) detailed?

50

iPad 2, iPhone 5, Apple TV (2011) detailed?

Engadget -- which doesn't just run any old rumor mind you -- claims they have the goods on the next generation iPad 2, iPhone 5, and Apple TV (2011). The big news, if accurate, seems to be a blazingly fast, dual-core ARM Cortex A9-based Apple A5 system-on-chip (SoC) and a switch to dual GSM/CDMA (but not LTE) Qualcomm radios that can run on both AT&T and Verizon. (Which our buddy Mickey Papillon first heard were Apple-bound back at CES 2010.)

iPhone 5 is said to be a complete redesign, which would be very different than the identical casings used for both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. A "total rethink" that's being tested but only on Apple's campus (so it won't turn up on the blogs, obviously). Apple has thus far introduced new iPhones in June.

iPad 2 still seems set for an April launch as expected. In addition to being slimmer and sleeker, it will include a higher resolution screen similar to but not the same as the current Retina Displays (yeah, we're confused by these back and forth rumors too!), front and rear cameras (FaceTime, of course), and an SD card slot (though no USB, sorry). It'll also have that Qualcomm chipset and Apple A5 proc.

Apple TV (2011), courtesy of the A5 chipset, will be able to play 1080p HD video "like running water". Whether or not this is also on a yearly cycle, meaning we'll have to wait until September 2011 to see it alongside the next generation iPod touch remains to be seen.

Again, these are all rumors and while Engadget is typically solid things can and will change. Apple reportedly had a more conservative "backup" iPhone 4 in case the one we got didn't pan out, so they could have a more conservative "backup" iPhone 5 as well. Also, Apple has been known to spread disinformation. It is fun to speculate though so let us know what you think -- are these the next generation iOS devices you've been waiting for?
