Apple CFO Speaks: iPhone 3GS Still Selling Out, No Apple DVR

Apple Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Peter Oppenheimer, spoke with analyst Robert Cihara of Caris & Company recently, and according to AppleInsider, revealed the following:
Apple is still struggling to meet to demand for the iPhone 3GS, and with China coming on board soon, that may be a longer term problem (it was still sold out when I checked a couple of local (Canadian) places last week).
There’s no plans for an Apple TV that would record cable or satellite as it doesn’t fit Apple’s current business plans (though one may wonder if there is, still and in fact, a plan for the “hobby” Apple TV device?)
Caris further predicted 27 million iPhones would be sold in 2009. Exciting number, that, and the graph above shows how important it’s becoming to Apple’s bottom line.

I believe it. I took me 4 days to track down my iPhone 3GS in white. My local best buy is still sold out and it has been 2 weeks.
Good question, what is their plan for Apple TV? Getting iTunes on your TV isn’t such an amazing feat anymore with all the other boxes out there doing dozens of other things.
Same here. I had to make a back order for my 3GS black 16GB from my local AT&T store about a few weeks after the launch date. Took only a week to wait till it arrived at the store though. No biggie.
It only makes sense for Apple to increase the capabilities of the Apple TV. Home computers are quickly becoming the center piece of the home entertainment system. I am hoping that the prediction of an actual Apple Television is true for the future.
So much for the palm pre iPhone killer…. Haha
The first day the 3GS was out I had to wait around as the provider was overwhellmed with new accounts to get the phone. They were even discouraging 3G owners to get one and just put up with the 3.0 OS as a temporary thing as they wanted new accounts, not upgrades.
It’s amazing they still have more demand than supply and with more mega markets to open it will get worse.
What about people who have a broken 3GS… what will they do about those? Replace with a 3G?
Great graphic! I can almost read it.

And Palm is kicking sand on Apple’s picnic blanket:

Sold out everywhere eh? Apples own iphone availabilty tells a completely different story on its website. High populous states such as NY, Cali, FL, Penn have tons of stores with plenty of iphone supply, but a trend seems to be the white 32 GB is selling faster than any other model.
7 million, outrageous, cut that number in half and its believable. 27 million? cut that in half and your back in the realm of reality (and thats taking into account China’s launch)
@ lol…
umm he or she must be from the from another fone website you sound like a hater =/ booooo
@LOL
Yes,the 27 million included the China launch.
Most sources do not predict 27 million for the year, Caris being Apple pet financial fanboy.
Published Sales figures to date iphones indicate 13.364 for fiscal 2009 quarters 1 thru 3.
If you assume best possible case, and apple repeats Q4 of 2008 and sells 6.8 million phones, the total for the year only comes to 20.25 million.
So I don’t think you can cut any estimate in half, like you claim, when the PUBLISHED numbers already EXCEED half.
Still I don’t think Apple sells 6.8 million in Q4. Not in this economy, and the China deal won’t hit the books till Q1/2010.
My estimate s about 18 million phones for the year.

Also it is unclear how many of the Q3 and Q4 sales will actually be $99 3G phones. Cook was reluctant to talk about that. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/21/first-rule-of-apple-earnings-calls-you-do-not-talk-about-the-99-iphone/
I found it surprising to be that the Iphone 3gs is sold out because I brought it about a month ago and I had no problem getting it. I simply walked into a AT&T store in New York City and they had it. As far as the Apple TV they are going to have to upgrade pretty fast since technology is advancing quicker than many think.
The US likely has priority on iPhone shipments. Canada, like I mentioned above, has had fairly continuous supply constraints since launch.
Superb site, where did you come up with the info in this piece? I’m glad I found it though, ill be checking back soon to see what other articles you have.
