Apple TV: Everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about Apple's Apple TV set top box, including movie and

The 3rd generation Apple TV launched in March of 2012 and supports 1080p video. Thanks to a recent software update, it also now supported Bluetooth keyboards. Other than that, it's very similar to the 2nd Generation Apple TV, which launched in September of 2010 and supported only 720p video.

The tiny box packs a wallop, however, with easy HDMI connectivity for your living room LCD or Plasma HD TV, and super simple, rent-only access to the iTunes Store, streaming-only access to your home iTunes library, and Internet access to podcasts, YouTube, Netflix, and other "channels" including news and sports like MLB. With AirPlay you can also stream media and mirror the screen right from your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad!

9to5Mac has found some code references in the recently released-to-developers iOS 5.1 beta for iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling it), iPad 3, and Apple TV 3.

  • The next iPhone is model number 5,1, representing another large internal upgrade, likely a next-generation Apple A6 system-on-a-chip. (iPhone 3G was 1,2, iPhone 4S was 4,1, so factor that into your tea-leaf reading about Apple's 2012 naming conventions.

Rumor: Discounted Apple TV 2 leads to Apple TV 3 speculation

Some major retailers seem to be selling the Apple TV 2 at a discount, leading 9to5Mac and TechCrunch to speculate a new model may be incoming and soon.

It's also being tagged as the 2010 Apple TV, leading to further speculation a 2011 model is nigh, though I think the Apple TV 2 has been referred to as Apple TV (2010) almost from launch to differentiate it from the original, non-iOS model.

Adobe also kills Flash for TV

While the big news yesterday was Adobe putting a bullet in the head of Flash Player for mobile, Ryan Lawler over a *GigaOm" noted a similar end for Flash for TV.

“Adobe will continue to support existing licensees who are planning on supporting Flash Player for web browsing on digital home devices and are using the Flash Player Porting Kit to do so. However we believe the right approach to deliver content on televisions is through applications, not a web browsing experience, and we will continue to encourage the device and content publishing community down that path.”

CBS turned down the chance of an Apple TV deal

Speaking on his company’s earnings call, CBS CEO Les Moonves said that CBS had turned down the Apple TV as a platform for its content. The revelation was revealed in response to a question about CBS’s appetite toward striking deals with new streaming providers that may not have the cash to pay up front for its content. Moonves claimed that CBS had turned down Apple and its Apple TV platform because the offer was based on an ad split revenue source.
