Apple wins patent that could potentially turn Apple TV into a cable box

Apple has just been granted a patent that it applied for 6 years ago that would allow them to turn the Apple TV into a cable box of sorts. This means instead of simply being able to stream content from iTunes, Netflix, and now Hulu, you'd be able to watch regular tv as well.

iTunes in the Cloud is part of iCloud, and lets you re-download or stream your previously purchased TV shows -- and music, movies, iBooks, and apps -- from your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Apple TV, or Windows or Mac PC. If you switch devices regularly, or don't want to take up space storing TV shows you watch infrequently, iTunes in the Cloud lets you keep everything you want to watch close by, and watch it whenever you want, wherever you want. You just have to make sure you're logged into your iTunes account, and you're good to go.

Poll: Which next-gen iOS device do you want the most?

There will almost certainly be an iPhone 5 this fall, likely October, and it may well come with a 4-inch, 16:9 screen and an LTE radio for super-fast networking. But is that the next-generation iOS device you want most?

Rumors are also running hot and heavy about a new addition to the iOS family, the first new addition since 2010 -- a 7.85-inch iPad mini. With the same powerful specs as the iPad 2, but in a much smaller package, it could be easier to carry, cheaper to buy, and much more attractive for education and mobile business. Is that the iOS device you've been lusting over?

The iPod touch hasn't been updated since the fall of 2010, so if Apple gives their gaming handheld the same kind of 4-inch, 16:9 inch screen, and maybe a redesign, would that be your dream iOS device?

Some kind of Apple TV variant? A full on Apple television? A larger screened iPad? Or something else entirely?

Which next-gen iOS device is also next on your iOS shopping list?

Apple updates Apple TV to iOS 5.1.1 (software 5.0.2)

Apple has pushed out Apple TV software version 5.0.2 (4250), still listed as iOS 5.1.1, but now with build number 9B830. The update is for both the 2010 Apple TV (720p) and 2012 Apple TV (1080p). Like with the last update, no new features are shown, and no new services seem to have been added, so this could just be another bug fix and performance enhancement release.
