MobileMe Having Post-Christmas Blues -- WebApp, iChat, Prefs Down, Down, Down!

According to MobileMe System Status, Mac Preferences, Windows Control Panel, iChat, and the www.me.com WebApps are down for the count. (Just how hard did they hit the eggnog over the last few days?)

Still, they're keeping some pretense of holiday spirit, or irony:

All other MobileMe services are online and fully operational

Let us know how badly you're affected, and when things start going smoothly for you again.

GV Mobile 2.0 for iPhone Coming Soon to Cydia

GV Mobile 2.0 for iPhone Coming Soon to Cydia

Boy Genius scored a sneak peak of a Google Voice client, GV Mobile 2.0, which will be available in the near future on Cydia to anyone with a jailbroken iPhone. GV Mobile is an application which allows your iPhone to use all of the features that comes with Google Voice and was actually in the App Store for a short period before Apple decided to yank it along with rejecting Google's very own application. After being pulled, the developer introduced GV Mobile to Cydia and offered up his hard work to anyone with a jailbroken iPhone.

Quick App: Night of the Living Dead (N.O.T.L.D.)

Quick App: Night of the Living Dead (N.O.T.L.D.)

We are very aware that this application may not be for all of our readers, but for those of you who are horror movie fanatics, N.O.T.L.D. [iTunes Link - $.99] is an app for you. Never again will you have to leave your home without your very own copy of George Romero's 1968 'zombie' classic, Night of the Living Dead.

This app includes the original and alternate movie posters, a streaming version of the movie which is broken down in chapters (streams perfectly fine on AT&T's 3G data network), and an wiki page detailing anything you'd like to know about this classic films history.

iPhone Review from WMExperts’ Phil -- Smartphone Round Robin

iPhone Review from WMExperts’ Phil -- Smartphone Round Robin

I'm an iPhone. Phil's a Windows Phone. Typically the jokes about creaky old, stylus and resistive bound, UI impaired smartphones of generations past would start there, but for this year's Smartphone Round Robin Phil's strapped with the HTC HD2 and not only are we unable to poke fun -- we're afraid to. But now that he's armed with the Windows Phone equivalent of an ICBM, how will he treat our iPhone?

BlackBerry 9700 and BlackBerry Storm2 Review from an iPhone Perspective -- Smartphone Round Robin

BlackBerry 9700 and BlackBerry Storm2 Review from an iPhone Perspective -- Smartphone Round Robin

RIM has one of the oldest OS platforms in the 2009 Smartphone Round Robin, but unlike Nokia's S60 (reviewed here last week), and Microsoft which is busy rebuilding, CrackBerry.com's signature BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Storm2 enjoy huge popularity in North America, a seemingly unbreakable hold on the Enterprise market, and an ever-increasing focus on consumers.

Last year, Dieter likened the previous BlackBerry Bold 9000 to the Treo 650 -- perhaps the ultimate representation of a platform at its peek of perfection... yet raising the question of where that platform had left to go. On the other hand, the original Storm1 never failed to disappoint, a hit in numbers but not hearts of BlackBerry lovers. Now it's a year later. Does the BlackBerry Bold 9700 take the roll of Treo 680, a slimmer, more polished perfection, still not hinting at platform futures to come? And does the Storm2 get right what the Storm2 done so wrong?

To try and answer that, the SPE editors did a Round Table with Mickey for the Cell Phone Junkie podcast, and I got plenty of help from CrackBerry Kevin and a stupefying amount of information from the CrackBerry Forums. Huge thanks to everyone -- I needed it!

(And just a reminder, every day you post on my CrackBerry.com thread, or any of the official Round Robin threads, is another day you're entered to win one of six (6!) new smartphones!)

Okay, time to bring the BlackBerry rain... after the break!

Bluetooth Keyboard for iPhone via Jailbreak BTstack

Bluetooth Keyboard for iPhone via Jailbreak BTstack

Ringwald's BTstack Keyboard for Jailbreak lets your iPhone 3G or 3GS, or BT-enabled iPod touch use a Bluetooth keyboard and is now available via Cydia.

Based on the open-source BTstack project, it's been tested on:

  • Apple Bluetooth keyboard
  • Think Outside Stowaway Universal keyboard
  • Palm Wireless keyboard

But should work on any similarly functioning device, and the status for iPhone 2G appears to still be up in the air.

Boxing Day Sales Hit Canada

Boxing Day Sales Hit Canada

The day after Christmas is Boxing Day in Canada, which has become the northern equivalent of the US' Black Friday sales extravaganza and now typically stretches the entire week before New Year.

So, Canadians, whether you're looking to save $20 off a 64GB iPod touch G3 from BestBuy.ca, $30 off a 16GB iPod touch 2G from sister store Futureshop.ca, or just get some music deals from Apple's iTunes Store Canada, either brave the cold and crowds, or surf the web

App Review: Air Video for iPhone

App Review: Air Video for iPhone

(Air Video for iPhone Forum Review by msbaylor. For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum Review Index!)

I was quite surprised when I found Air Video for iPhone [$2.99 - iTunes link] was available in the App Store and was even more blown away with what is said it could do.

  • Video Streaming: Watch videos from your computer, over the air, on your iPhone or iPod touch. No need to sync with iTunes or transfer files.

  • Live Conversion: Convert video from a non-iPhone friendly container like AVI or MKV, or codec like XviD or DivX while you're watching. No need to convert-

iPhone and iPod touch are very picky about the video formats they can play. Normally this means you need to convert the entire video before you can watch it. This can easily take an hour!

But would it live up to it?

Besides downloading the iPhone App, you'll need to download the program for your computer (for PC & Mac OS X 10.4+). Neither app/program will work without the other. The iPhone app is basically a front end (UI) to the computer program.

App Review: Labyrinth 2 for iPhone

App Review: Labyrinth 2 for iPhone

(Labyrinth 2 for iPhone Forum Review by cjvitek. For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum Review Index!)

Labyrinth was one of the first games that I saw to come out for the iPhone. I never downloaded it (beyond the free version) but when Labyrinth 2 [$4.99 - iTunes link] came out, I thought I would give it a try. And boy, am I glad I did.

Labyrinth 2 takes the classic Labyrinth and builds a complex game from a simple concept. For those unfamiliar with the original ORIGINAL labyrinth, it was a wooden board with a couple of dials on either side. These dials would tilt the board, and your goal was to move a marble from the start of the maze, or labyrinth, to the end. My father actually had the original! The original iPhone version was basically the same thing, except tilting the iPhone was how you moved the balls. This new version adds some new levels and twists on to that concept.

Follow Friday: Twitbit 2.3 Edition

1

Follow Friday: Twitbit 2.3 Edition

Twitbit [$2.99 - iTunes link] is the iPhone Twitter client that just won't quit -- pushing updates and new features almost as fast as notifications. The latest is Twitbit 2.3:

  • Support for Twitter's new retweet feature.
  • Support for Twitter's new geotagging feature.
  • Support for Twitter's new lists feature.
  • Support for Twitter's new user search feature.
  • Trends tab.
  • Trend explanations.
  • Account management redesigned.
  • Search bar added to timeline.
  • User profile added to tabs.
  • Connect Twitter accounts to iPhone contacts.

I've been lucky enough to have a beta to try out for a while and 2.3 feels really solid. Overall the interface is fluid and intuitive, the functionality is very well balanced with usability, and the Push Notifications are typically crisp and well-concatenated given the limits of the iPhone modal popup system. If you want a fast, friendly, and pushy iPhone Twitter client, Twitbit might just be for you. And if you're not sure, give Twitbit Lite a try first [Free - iTunes link].

And this being Follow Friday, if you need anyone to try it out with, give Team TiPb a shout:

@theiphoneblog, @reneritchie (Rene), @backlon (Dieter), @iChadman (Chad), @JFSikora (Jeremy), @jamesus (James), @llofte (Leanna), @GeorgiaTiPb (Georgia), @JHamilton24 (Josh), @justin_horn (Justin), @msproductions (Matt), @skeetobite (Chris).

Dear Santa Jobs: All We Want for iPhone 4.0 is...

Dear Santa Jobs: All We Want for iPhone 4.0 is...

Dear Santa Jobs, all we want for Christmas iPhone 4.0 is... Well, grab your cocoa (touch) and take a long sip, because just like our buddy Derek, we've a bit of a list this year.

Don't get us wrong, you revolutionized a lazy, arrogant smartphone industry with your UI in 2007, shook up mobile app delivery with your store in 2008, and re-defined the "budget" $99 price point in 2009, all the while pushing software updates and evolving hardware that forced your competitors to catch up or re-invent themselves completely. But if the merry little elves of the Round Robin have shown us anything, it's that catch up they have. And more than that, even though we got stockings chock full of iPhone 3.0 cut-and-paste, stereo Bluetooth, MMS, and other goodies last year, there's still some minor little things we'd love you to resolve in 2010.

(And yes, we're aware almost all of these suggestions are straight out of Cydia and already available for Jailbroken iPhones. That's not coal worthy, it's a holiday miracle!)

Comfy? Good, because here's the naughty and nice of it...
