10 Shortcomings to Touch Screens You May Not Like About iPhone

10 Shortcomings to Touch Screens You May Not Like About iPhone

Red Ferret has posted ten criticisms of touch displays that users may strongly dislike about iPhone as well. Now, I am a long time PDA veteran and have used mobile devices for as many years as there are points in this article. And I can say that most of these criticism are rather frivolous or exaggerated. Point 4 is particularly nitpickish. Is it really a shortcoming that you can't carry your car keys in the same pocket with your phone? Uh, not if you also consider it a shortcoming that you can't drive your car in the same lane with oncoming traffic.

Anyway, feel free to read through the ten points and draw your own conclusions.

Can Anyone Kill iPhone?

1

Can Anyone Kill iPhone?

Whether iPhone becomes a huge success or a lukewarm seller remains to be seen. But it's a safe bet the product will achieve iconic status. When you look at the current handset landscape no clear challenger emerges, and that's going to present Verizon, Sprint, et al., with an enormous disadvantage and something to sweat over as iPhone's launch date looms.

Update: More June 29 Details Emerge, Here's Where the Fun Begins

Ok, so now more details are emerging on Apple and AT&T's luanch plans. Pay attention, because this is a bit on the strange side. Apparently AT&T stores will be closing around 4:30. Customers will actually be kicked out of stores at that time (that's no joke). Why, you ask? Because Apple has tightly managed initial iPhone fulfillment to stores so that shipments will arrive at AT&T Wireless stores between 4:30pm and 6:00opm. After 6:00pm the stores will reopen and will stay open unusually late (as late as midnight) to cope with iPhone demand. How bout that?

In all the cling and clatter of iPhone hype, we overlooked the other piece of iPhone hardware that required FCC approval. Well today, iPhone's companion BT headset jumped through the FCC's hoops and is now cleared for manufacturing. One step closer to D-Day.

Apple Cancelling Personal Shopping Appointments for 29 June?

Apple Cancelling Personal Shopping Appointments for 29 June?

I'm sure this is fantastic news for Apple customers with busy schedules who made appointments for that day. Pushed aside for a phone? Yeah, that's going to go over well.

Much to my chagrin, I received a telephone call from the manager of my local Apple Store yesterday to “reschedule” my appointment for 29 June. No reason was given… If you’ve made a Personal Shopping appointment for the 29th in hopes of securing an iPhone you should call your Apple Store to confirm it. Word is that the decision to cancel the appointments for the 29th was made on a corporate level.

New Fake iPhone Ad Created by Enthusiast

This is a very professional video even if it is faux. I like it better than the real ads made by TBWA\Chiat\Day. The producer of this video even created a website for it. Check it out.

Buttons or Screen? The Debate Rages On

Buttons or Screen? The Debate Rages On

John Markoff of NYT waxes philosophical on the argument over hardware buttons vs. bitmap screen in his latest editorial.

The downside is that typing is done by pecking on the screen with thumbs or fingers, something hardly anyone outside of Apple has experienced yet. “The tactile feedback of a mechanical keyboard is a pretty important aspect of human interaction,” said Bill Moggeridge, a founder of Ideo, an industrial design company in Palo Alto, Calif. “If you take that away you tend to be very insecure.”
