iTunes 8.1 and Front Row 2.1.7 Now Available

Ready. Set. Software Update!

Yes, as expected this morning, Apple has released iTunes 8.1 (and Front Row 2.1.7) with support for the new iPod shuffle 4G with VoiceOver, also tied into the updated Apple Remote app [iTunes link] released earlier today for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Anyone got it yet? Is it really faster, stronger, and better for you? Let us know!

[Thanks to Blake for the tip!]

Apple's New Headset Controls Rewind Tracks... Control Moon Rockets?

Apple's New Headset Controls Rewind Tracks... Control Moon Rockets?

Yes, that title is a totally sarcastic way to say the new controls on Apple's new iPod shuffle 4G reach NASA-like complexity levels. (Insert ancient telegraph sounds here).

So complicated are they, in fact, Apple has a knowledge-base article up about it along with a chart that while it resembled the periodic table of elements, is no where near as simple. Granted, most of that complexity doesn't apply to the iPhone controls... yet, but we're assuming its on its way.

iTunes 8.1 "Coming Soon": Faster, More Genius-y, Rip to iTunes Plus

iTunes 8.1 "Coming Soon": Faster, More Genius-y, Rip to iTunes Plus

Apple's new iPod shuffle 4GB with VoiceOver comes with a little something else: the requirement for iTunes 8.1, which is yet to be released. However, in somewhat uncharacteristic style for Apple, their iTunes product page already has a teaser up for just what we can expect in the (presumably immanent?) new version:

iPod touch 2G Untethered Jailbreak Now Available

iPod touch 2G Untethered Jailbreak Now Available

Today is a good day to be a iPod touch 2G owner. Particularly if you have been waiting for an untethered jailbreak method to appear. The Dev Team put up a post late last night on their blog:

<

blockquote>The iPod Touch 2G is now another member of the “pwned for life” family. It has a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along. This is the full, untethered jailbreak, something that iPod Touch 2G users have not had before today.

Apple Updates Shuffle: 4GB, VoiceOver

Apple Updates Shuffle: 4GB, VoiceOver

Apple Store goes down, Apple Store comes up with just what we expected: a new revision of the iPod Shuffle. It's got 4 gigs of storage, comes in silver and black, and an all new feature: VoiceOver.

The new Shuffle is half the size of the previous -- a feat achieved by removing nearly all of the controls off the device itself and onto the headphone cable. Only the Off/Repeat/Shuffle switch stays on device. In other words -- don't plan on using your own headphones with the Shuffle. While that's a bit of a downer, the upside is that the headphone controls are very thoughtfully laid-out and easy to hit without looking.

VoiceOver and how the controls work -- after the break!

Prototype iPhone Firmware in the Wild

Prototype iPhone Firmware in the Wild

Prototype as in the early engineering test unit we saw briefly on Ebay and YouTube, we're guessing. Apple had that pulled. Will they be able to pull the firmware now that it's been leaked onto the internet? Probably not, but they'll likely not be able to pull Steve Jobs and his iCommandos off the person who leaked it either...

If it's not a gag, hoax, or other form for silly fun, getting a look at the origins of the iPhone OS could potentially help some developers... and some competitors.

Apple Store Down! 4GB iPod Shuffle Commeth?

Apple Store Down! 4GB iPod Shuffle Commeth?

It's not that the Apple Store is down -- that happens fairly often. But on a Wednesday?! It's a running joke that Tuesdays are Apple product drops. Did Daylight Savings Time bump Apple not just 1, but 24 hours into the future? Tough to know.

Tougher to know what they'll be releasing this time, though chances of a 32GB red iPhone are next to none. MacRumors is hearing a 4GB iPod shuffle, though, which is scary big for a tiny device... and makes us think 32GB iPhone's aren't out of the question for an update later this year...

Google Nuking Infinite SMS App for iPhone

Google Nuking Infinite SMS App for iPhone

Michael on Facebook sent us link to this announcement on innerfence, which says Google is shutting down the Infinite SMS App.

According to the developers:

Google has claimed no grievance with Infinite SMS other than its success. Their given reason for the block isn’t abuse or wrongdoing; it’s that we brought too many users (and thus too much cost) to an experimental service.

Google’s official statement reads:

Tweetie 1.3 Now Approved for the App Store!

Was it the outcry on Twitter? The evisceration courtesy of numerous blogs? Or did someone at Apple actually take our advice and wake up? We don't know. But we do know this: according to developer Loren Brichter:

Great news! [Tweetie] 1.3 has now been approved! Alright Apple!

App Story: Human Weather Rejected for Twitter F**k, Implemented Filter, Now in App Store (NSFW-L)

Following up on the story about Tweetie 1.3 being rejected because an Apple reviewer saw the word f**k in the Twitter Trends tab, developer Crowded Road contacted us with the story of their app, Human Weather, which was initially rejected by Apple for a similar reason: someone happened to have dropped the f-bomb in the Twitter-stream while it was being reviewed.
