DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket coming to Apple TV?

A new survey by DirecTV could indicate a future new addition for their NFL Sunday Ticket service. According to a tipster, the survey indicates the possibility of adding the service to currently unsupported devices that connect to the internet such as the current Apple TV.

NFL Sunday ticket already streams to PCs and mobile devices even if you don't have DirecTV. The survey indicates the addition of adding other platforms to the list of supported devices and also indicates a possible different pricing scheme depending on how you would want to subscribe to the service.

Are next-generation games the next iPhone killer app?

22

Are next-generation games the next iPhone killer app?

One look at the games being released for this season and it's easy to think we're entering into the next great generation of iPhone (and iPad) gaming. Infinity Blade has brought Epic's Unreal 3 Engine to iOS in grand fashion, with spectacular, real-time environments, fun gameplay, and character models and motion that would have blown me away on a PS2, let alone a handheld device that also surfs the web and makes phone calls. In a day or so we'll also get Real Racing 2, sequel to Firemint's Apple Design Award Winning driver, complete with 30 licensed, gorgeously reproduced cars and highly anticipated multiplayer online gaming.

These are features that, until now, were reserved for PC and console games. They're premium titles, the kind that take the time and effort of small scale motion pictures to make. They're what's putting a hurt on Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS business, never mind other smartphones. And they're on our iPhone, with more and more to come.

In a market where other platforms are now achieving 3rd party software parity with Apple -- they have enough of the kind of applications people want on their mobile devices that tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands are quantitative but no longer qualitative differentiators -- and raw hardware specs that equal and may soon eclipse iPhone 4, these kinds of games could be the iPhone's killer apps and Apple's next short term differentiator.

Infinity Blade update coming next week, multiplayer next year

Infinity Blade, powered by Epic’s Unreal 3 engine, was only released on December 9th, but it will receive a substantial update next week. The update will include five new weapons, shields and helmets as well as a new armor set; enough apparently to increase the level cap to 45. A new enemy will also be thrown into the mix; known as Marrow Fiend.

Another update is also in the works thought to be coming in early 2011. This should reveal new areas to explore and a more evolving story and challenging fight sequences.

Apple TV iOS 4.1.1 update now available

Head on over to your Apple TV (2010)'s Update Software feature and give it a click because it looks like Apple has just released iOS 4.1.1. We're guessing this is a bug fix release, hopefully to address some of the HDCP and Netflix errors we've been seeing.

If you get the update and notice anything else new, let us know!

Google Voice app updated, not supports iPad, iPod touch

Google Voice app updated, not supports iPad, iPod touch

Google has updated Google Voice app for iPhone, extending support to the iPad and iPod touch.

At the top of the list was adding support for iPod Touch and iPad. Starting today, you can download a new version of Google Voice that lets you use all the features of the app on these devices, such as sending and receiving free text messages.

It looks like Google hasn't allowed users to use their iPad or iPod touch as a calling device but you still get a lot of great features to play with including the ability to initiate a Google Voice call from your iPod touch by sending it to your iPhone (or any desired number). Using a new feature called Click2Call, all you do is tap the Call button in Google Voice and select which phone you'd like it to ring to. Google Voice will then call the selected device and connect your call. Pretty neat!

Full updated list after the break. Any readers planning on grabbing this for their iPad or iPod touch? Anyone wish they'd turn on a VoIP option already? Let us know in the comments!

How to Airpl

10

How to Airpl

TUAW's Erica Sadun, if ever a wiz there was, has once again hacked away at Apple's iOS 4.2 AirPlay feature and created an app called AirPlayer that gets it to stream video from iPhone or iPad to the Mac.

What AirPlayer does is create and advertise a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that pretends to be an Apple TV. Bonjour is Apple's zero configuration networking solution for allowing devices and applications to communicate with each other over local area networks. When Apple created AirPlay, it basically set up a new way for Apple TV to interact with iOS using Bonjour communications.

She's not a Windows dev but says in theory the same thing should be possible on that platform and perhaps Linux as well.

You don't need to Jailbreak to try this out (the app runs on your Mac, not your iPhone or iPad) but if you're not Jailbroken and running AirVideoEnabler you'll be limited to YouTube and iPod/Videos for your streaming (AirVideoEnabler lets 3rd party apps stream AirPlay video as well).

If you want to try it out, you can get AirPlayer from Erica's website, below. Video after the break!

CNN launches an iPad app

CNN has just launched an iPad app that allows users to browse stories, read breaking news, as well as share stories via Twitter or Facebook. The app has a couple different views built in so you can choose to either quickly view stories or view a complete, interactive slide show.

The CNN app also allows you to leave comments and engage with the rest of the CNN community. As live video is available, you'll also be able to stream that when breaking news occurs. If you find a story you'd like to save for later or show someone else, you can save stories for offline reading as well.
