Got iTunes HD? And an Old Display? -- NO HD FOR YOU!

Yesterday, Dieter told us Apple had finally pulled the trigger on HD downloads for iTunes. Today, the internets (led by iLounge, via Gizmodo) are up in arms because said downloads are infected with Big Media-enforced DRM to such a degree that they can't even play on older, non-HDCP (high definition copy protection) compatible devices.

UPDATED: Next Gen iPhone to be an Internet Screamer? (802.11n? 3.5G HSPDA+?)

UPDATE: Apple Insider points out this could also refer to an AT&T network upgrade to 3.5G HSPDA+ type cell speeds. Or maybe both?

New iPhone hardware rumors are coming our way fast and furiously now, what with new device numbers, OLED screens, and... faster Internet speeds?

That's what Silicone Alley Insider is saying:

Apple to use OLED in Next Gen iPhone Screens?

Apple to use OLED in Next Gen iPhone Screens?

Smarthouse (via BGR) has a report saying Apple just might be making the leap to OLED (organic light emitting diode) screens for those future iPhone models mentioned yesterday.

It's also believed that a new iPhone and iPod Touch due later this year will include an OLED screen made by LG who last year scored a multibillion dollar deal to manufacture display screens for Apple.

TiPb Give Away: BeeJive 2.1 for iPhone with FaceBook Chat and Anti-Piracy Combat!

BeeJive makes one of the best instant messenger clients on the iPhone -- or any platform, see our review -- and with version 2.1, it now includes:

  • Support for Facebook IM, including the ability to login from multiple locations, update your buddy picture and Facebook status updates
  • Wallpaper selection inside the application, giving you the ability to select your own wallpaper
  • Performance enhancements

But wait, there's more. It also includes a very creative -- and comedic! -- way of dealing with iPhone App pirates. Sort of a carrot and stick (or baseball bat and axe kick) approach:

iPhone 3.0: Publish Video?

iPhone 3.0: Publish Video?

Go to Photos. Choose a photo. Tap the action button. Choose "Send to Mobile Me" and a screen slides up labeled... Publish Video? Hard to believe that's a simple typo, or even a bald-faced trick. But if it isn't, is it a sign the Video Recording -- One of the features still missing in action following this week's iPhone 3.0 Preview Event -- may be coming to the iPhone come "summer"?

iPhone OS 3.0: Encrypt iPhone Backups in iTunes 8.1

iPhone OS 3.0: Encrypt iPhone Backups in iTunes 8.1

iPhone OS 3.0 is the gift that just keeps on giving, this time revealing features in iTunes 8.1 we hadn't seen before. Now, when you hook an iPhone running the 3.0 beta 1 software up, under the Summary tab you have a new option: Encrypt iPhone backup.

Checking off the option opens a pop-up window for you to enter your password.

We're not sure yet what form of encryption Apple is using, though the Steve Gibson is us hopes it's something with a really, really strong security focus. Especially for those in enterprise or government who might have a need for it.

iPhone 3.0: Notes Sync (Finally!)

iPhone 3.0: Notes Sync (Finally!)

When Steve Jobs first showed off the iPhone at Macworld 2007, and told the world that it would sync data via iTunes, Notes Sync was one of the items listed on his Keynote slide. Meanwhile, over on the Mac side, Apple shipped OS X 10.5 Leopard, and the desktop Mail app popped up a warning about syncing Notes to the iPhone.

This probably led you -- as it did us -- to believe the original iPhone on OS 1.x would sync notes.

Apple Releases HD Movie Purchases in iTunes

Apple Releases HD Movie Purchases in iTunes

The word has gone out: Apple is now allowing you to do more than just rent movies in HD, they're letting you buy them. You're looking at spending a bit extra for the HD version - $19.99 to be precise. They're pushing preorders for a few movies (Quantum of Solace and Twilight) but there are also a few you can buy right now (Saw V, for example. Sadists rejoice!).

UPDATED: iPhone 3.0: Code References iPhone Gen 3 and 4 Hardware? And iPod touch Gen 3? And iProd 0? iFPGA?

UPDATE: Ars Technica has found references to an iProd 0,1 (iProduct prototype? Could that be the iTablet?) and an iFPGA, which they say may be something to do with "field-programmable gate array" (yeah, us neither). So Apple is either really busy building out their Mobile OS X offerings, or are having a load of fun punkd'ing the blogosphere...

ORIGINAL: We pretty much know there will be new iPhone hardware. Apple is likely always working a generation, two generations, three generations ahead. What we don't know is what and when.

CEOh-Snap! Ballmer Says iPhone/Capacitive Touch Too Expensive! (That'll be $800 for the Xperia Please!)

CEOh-Snap! Ballmer Says iPhone/Capacitive Touch Too Expensive! (That'll be $800 for the Xperia Please!)

We have to wonder if Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has some insidious plot to make his PR people pull their hair out, so they'll look just as Fester'ian as he himself. Or maybe he's just jealous of the love TiPb's been giving Palm's Roger McNamee lately? How else can you account for the glorious (for bloggers!) content he keeps spewing in our general direction?

iPhone 3.0: New Podcast Controls in iPod! Jump Back! Multi-Speed Scrubbing!

iPhone 3.0: New Podcast Controls in iPod! Jump Back! Multi-Speed Scrubbing!

In iPhone OS 2.x, we bemoaned the seemingly useless nature of the repeat and buttons when it came to podcast playback. They just sort of hung around, like guests who were welcome when the music was playing, but just wouldn't leave when the party was over.

Now, in iPhone 3.0, Apple has replaced them with an email icon on the left hand side, and a speed counter on the right hand side. The email icon supposedly allows you to send an iTunes Link for the podcast (similar to how you could previously email YouTube video links).

iPhone After Dark: Gizmodo Goes Wild (NSFW-AC)

We can't use the picture Gizmodo used to headline their post, so we're retreating beneath the wholesome banner of Megan Fox for this one (blink blink). Suffice it to say, mixing and matching from their Gawker Media heritage, Gizmodo asks the adult-content question:

Can the new OS make the iPhone the best sexual toy ever?
