Apple introduces tiny, iPhone-like multitouch iPod nano

During Apple's annual special music event today Steve Jobs introduced a new iPod nano that removes the click wheel and adds a 1.5-inch multitouch screen and an iPhone-like background and set of icons including Music, Genius, FM radio (hey, where's that for iPhone?), Fitness, and iTunes. It also has some interesting new gestures like touch and twist to rotate the screen. (No accelerometer?)

“This is the biggest reinvention of the iPod nano since its debut in 2005, and we think users are going to love it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Replacing the click wheel with our Multi-Touch interface has enabled us to shrink the iPod nano into an amazingly small design that is instantly wearable with its built-in clip.”

Available in nano chromatic colors. $149 for 8GB $179 for 16GB. They ship next week.

Check out the screen in the shot above and one more afte and let us know what you think!

Steve Jobs happy Intel bought Infineon WSL?

According to CEO Paul Otelini, he made sure Steve Jobs was comfortable with the purchase before Intel acquired Apple iPhone 3G baseband supplier, Infineon WSL.

Intel chef Paul Otellini says he checked the opinion of Apple CEO Steve Jobs before buying German chipmaker Infineon Technologies' wireless unit for US$7.7 billion. The deal makes Intel a major supplier of the baseband chips that let mobile phones connect to cellular networks.

Fox, ABC to offer $0.99 iTunes rentals, CBS, NBC to keep heads buried in sand?

"People familiar with the situation" (yes, them again) have told the Wall Street Journal that both Fox and ABC are good to go on $0.99 iTunes TV show rentals, and will be announced later today at Apple's special music event. Since ABC is owned by Disney, whose largest shareholder is Steve Jobs, their getting on board isn't a huge surprise. Likewise, Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox, introduced Jobs at D8 and is all up in Apple rescuing print media (like the Wall Street Journal) and TV alike.
